Folks, the Impala of 2014 has to be a Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala and Caprice, all in one nameplate. It has to be a rental car, a police car, a taxi, a family car, a sport sedan, a business fleet car, a highway traveler, and an old man's car. The old B-bodies were chameleons to cover market demands. This new one will have to do the same.

Those who want a luxury car can go buy a Cadilla.

I would bet that the 2.0T will be the std. engine making around 250hp with optional 3.6L V6. The reasoning is they want to make this thing competitive with the Taurus and I doubt that they would have 70-80 less horsepower than a standard Taurus which makes 260 horses.

But then a Chevy would have a better standard engine than a more expensive Cadillac ATS. And if the 2.5 liter four has adequate power for a Cadillac sports sedan, it must have enough for a Chevy comfort sedan. And a more expensive LaCrosse has a 4-cylinder without a turbo too.

But I agree with you, I think the 2.0T is a better option, because that engine should get the same fuel economy as a 2.5L and Ford may put the 2.0 Ecoboost in everything they make and the Passat has a 2.0T. I also like the optional V6, this is a full size car and appeals to some older buyers who are comfortable with a V6. This is also why I don't like the XTS, it will have the same powertrain as an Impala.

The Camaro comes with the 3.6 standard... by your reasoning that is a better car than a Cadillac then.

I understand why it might be bad to have more power than the LaX but when it comes to the ATS comparison it's important to note the Impala is going to be about ~203in long and ~74in wide and the ATS is going to be comparable in size to a BMW 3-Series.

They could do the 4-cylinder and eAssist as standard in the Imapala and LaCrosse. My thinking is though that both are rather large and heavy, especially if the Impala is bigger than the LaCrosse. So I would think a turbo 4 is better suited, even if it is 230 hp. eAssist may be needed to hit CAFE though, so I understand offering it. And V6 should be offered in Impala and Lacrosse. The Malibu can be 4-cylinder only, as long as they offer a turbo.

And a relatively tiny trunk pre-loaded with boxes. And a noise like an airplane taking off coming from the parcel shelf via the battery cooling fan. Ew.

I think the base engine might be the 2.5, with 2.0t & 3.6L optional. I'm thinking it will need a relatively simple, inexpensive base engine for fleets and economy-minded individuals.

You are part right. But here is the difference.

Years ago you bought a chevy and the only difference was the trim and body style of one model, unless you bought a truck or Vette. One model had to do it all. Today you are correct to a point as we normally see 3 models LS, LT and LTZ. These for the most are just trim packages to make it cheaper to sell and build the cars.

Here is where things change now. Today we get more than one model and 3 trim levels of each. But with Chevy it has the key roll yet to be the value leader and the car that gives a lot for the money. While it will get some good things it will always lack some things that only will be seen on Buick and Cadillac. We can' expect todays cars to fit slots for cars from years ago as the market has changes, the cars have changes and the customers have changed.

So in the end while your right there is more to it but in the end if you want more buy a Cadillac.

It will get AWD and eAssist. Prototypes for both have already been built.

This is something that many I think forget about. We have yet to see where all this is going. We have more body styles and options to come as GM has made it clear we will not get all packages at the same time anymore as they will spread them out.

I feel a little disapointed GM has taken the Malibu farther at the intro than they have. I think they should have advanced it a little more than they have. But I keep in mind there is a lot more to come and hope they keep it coming at a steady rate to keep this car viable.

I felt the same way about the Cruze when it first came out too but the public has responed in a much greater way and I find that the car is a lot better than I first expected. I expected good but once I drove it I found it was really good for what it is suppost to be.

That means an Impala with 37mpg

Mine gets near that already on the highway. Last big trip I took last summer got almost 36MPG

Well, nah, I'm pretty sure just the one body style. The guys on GMI are drooling over some Impala coupe illustrations someone did, but it's never gonna happen.

boooooooo... Impala coupe and convertible would garner an immense emotional response from customers who are oppressed, real Chevy fans. Those who have pride in their cars, who don't see automobiles as just necessities, but as an expression of self.

I agree on the Impala. I just ment that they would offer AWD, engines and etc other items on the car not available at the start. While we may not get a SS it could get a RS treatment. Though a turbo LNF AWD would be of interest. Too bad it would run the price out of the Impala range and would be better suited for a Buick price.

I really don't see a coupe here doing well. Now in the Malibu class it still would not out sell the sedan but a think a coupe would do ok.

I guess I'm going to have to make a formal announcement because I've warned ya'll ENOUGH TIMES now ... my "big heart" is NO MORE.

That noted ... goodness NO. Do NOT drag the Biscayne, Bel Air, and especially the Caprice, nameplates into Ch#$r%*et's Front-Wheel Drive Madhouse. That is NOT an acceptable notion ... IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.

I AGREE with you about all the things the new Celebrity/Lumina/"impala" has to be ... but dragging the other nameplates in is simply a no no. PERIOD.

I'm hoping for a 3800-lbs. Impala, "powered" with a turbocharged 1.3L 4-cyl. engine that makes 160 HP @ 7600 RPM and 145 lbs.-ft. of torque @ 5800 RPM, mated to an 11-speed auto tranny with a torque convertor the size of a silver dollar.
