We like to complain at length about the bad ideas incorporated into vehicles these days, but what are the bad ideas they haven't implemented yet?

Here's what I'm thinking:

- A front engined, front wheel drive motorcycle with the engine mounted in front of the front tire, on the front fork. The space where the engine normally goes is used for storage of something.

- A convertible with a removable fabric floor instead of a removable fabric roof.

- A rear engined, rear wheel steering, front wheel drive pickup with the bed over the front wheels instead of the rear.

- A cabover economy car.

- A set of in-dash smoke machines instead of Service Engine Soon lights that expel different colored smokes depending on what's wrong.

- Expanded steel seat covers for strength and ease of cleaning.

- A Wii remote instead of a real steering wheel.

- A double-decker VW Bus.

- A rear seat with a built in charcoal grille.

What other bad ideas are out there that vehicle makers haven't done yet?

A pick up truck with the pick up bed in front, and the passenger cabin and engine in the rear. That way you can watch your cargo while you drive.

YES, watch it blow all over your windshield, blocking your vision, so you crash head-on into some old lady's clothesline festooned with her bloomers.

We already have chromed plastic that chips too easily and looks terrible in a few years, so let's go all the way and have chromed vinyl too. Preferably an entire dashboard made out of it.

I think I've seen something like this.

Actually, I'm SURE I've seen this.

Isetta?

Any British car of the '60s or '70s?

Isn't this basically an air-cooled Volkswagen with a heater? Okay, it wasn't charcoal and actuall ran on gas, but I'm sure you could have cooked hot dogs on it!

Well, Jeep has done the compact 4dr convertible SUV, but I'd really like to see a 4dr convertible full size sedan w/ 4wd (and lots of ground clearance..)

Hmmm....how about a FWD pickup?

Chrysler is way ahead of you:

Dodge-Rampage.jpg

Just a heads up, the truck in that photo has a roof with a healthy chop job, and is not stock. The standard Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp had a much higher roof and standard early '80s trim.

That said, you can add the VW Caddy to the FWD pickup list.

Ah, yes, forgot about those ... because I was thinking more along the lines of something the size of a Silverado or F-150 or RAM.....
