It's rolling around to my original hire date (July 3rd), and I still have 2 weeks vacation time coming that I have to use before then, or I lose it, per written company policy. So I took next week and the last week of the month, which means I'll be off one week, work two, then off another in June. I earned this time, and I think I need it, although there are no big plans.

Yesterday, my boss pulls me aside and says if I "want" to, he can make arrangements with the BIG boss that I can take one week off, then for the second week, I can take the vacation pay but come to work, or I can push the second week off past my hire date, which means I will have 4 weeks vacation coming after my hire date (it will be starting my 6th year with the company, normally we get 3 weeks plus the spillover week.)

I love what I do, but everybody needs to recharge once in a while. Would you give up earned time off if your boss "sort of" asked you to? Or would you take your time away from the grind to rest and relax?

Couple things to consider: economics and legalities. Sure, you are legally entitled to your vacation time, but this economy situation is kind of iffy. How secure is your job? If you "take one for the company," would you be seen as a go-getter and earn favored status with the boss, or would you be seen as a pushover?

Also, can you send him an email asking for a clarification on the choice? That way, you can get him to have a record in case anything shady transpires down the line. Always protect yourself.

I've always tried to use my carryover... my last salaried position had 3 weeks/yr vacation, but I had only used about 3 days of it when I resigned in March..got paid for two weeks I had earned.
