Am I the only one who makes an automotive contingency plan? If my car were to be destroyed tomorrow, I have a list of cars I'd check:

Jetta Sportwagen TDI

Golf TDI

Regal

Taurus

Clubman

Journey (this one surprises even me, but I could see picking one up)

So what's your short list if you needed a replacement for what you've got?

Posted

Another early 80s Oldsmobile or Buick coupe.

98 Coupe

Toronado

Electra coupe

Riviera

I could also see myself going for a '91 or '92 Toronado as well

or if I could find an '80 or '81 Seville (avoiding the 4100) that wasn't beat to hell

there is nothing on my list new for me.

If something happened to the CR-V it would almost certainly be replaced by a new Equinox or an '08 SRX V6 AWD

If my car were to get destroyed, I'd use the truck.

If my truck were to get destroyed, I'd use the car.

If a tree fell on my garage in the middle of the night and both of them got destroyed, I'd consider:

HHR

Cobalt SS (CPO)

Charger

CTS (CPO)

STS (CPO)

Colorado/Canyon

Silverado/Sierra shortbed

Posted

Hmmm...

If my Jeep died or was totaled by a cactus falling on it or something, I'd strongly consider going the CPO route or other late model (05+) low mileage (under 50k) used route...considering the depreciation of a new $30-50k car, I can live without new..

My top choices would be: (05 or newer)

Another Grand Cherokee

A Jeep Commander

Crown Vic, Grand Marquis or Town Car

Mustang GT

Pontiac G8

CTS

STS

300C

Charger R/T or SRT8

Challenger R/T or SRT8

After having the same daily driver for almost 11 years now, I've been thinking a lot about this matter lately...

W-LaCrosse

Lucerne

another Impala

Malibu 2LT or LTZ

Saturn Aura

older DTS

Panther

Astra wagon or 5-door;

Golf 3-door;

Polo GTI;

Megane wagon

You wacky Europeans and your cars we don't get in the states.

A couple other, very remote options would be a previously enjoyed A4 cabriolet or a Volt if I need a car after the waiting list gets pared down.

Fiesta

Fiat 500

New or used Golf or GTI

Used Prius

Used 5-series

Used 9-5 Aero manual

Used S60 or V70 manual

Yeah, it's all over the place...

Could I afford a new car:

Ford Focus Titanium sedan with the Titanium Handling Package

Ford Mustang GT

Dodge Charger R/T

Dodge Challenger SRT8

Dodge Journey R/T

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Chrysler 300C

Posted

HHR

Impreza/WRX

Would look at other wagons/hatches.

I've been eyeballing the above anyway because they would be good for my business. It's a bit of a pain loading/unloading computers/monitors/toolbox from the trunk of my SC2, but I don't need to haul much, so something fuel efficient (and perhaps a bit fun in the case of the WRX) but easy to load/unload is pretty much what I'm looking at.

I try not to think of these things because it just leads to temptation. Hopefully don't need to make this decision before the ATS is available

A4 Quattro

Passat CC

GTI or Golf TDI

Countryman

Posted

I would downgrade if my 2500HD were totaled, to a 1500 CC, but I'd look at all the Big 3 trucks.

Why not stay with the 2500?

Costs?

If the Cobalt were destroyed in an accident, I'd be walking. And then maybe after a while, I'd get another one.

As far as the Camaro, the State of California's emmissions regulations says it's no longer roadworthy (changed cats, mufflers, still won't pass emissions so I think something's wrong internally), so it is now a racecar...that is if I can ever get around to working on it. I figure, If I'm going to tear the thing apart to fix it, I may as well.

Depends on which car-

Sonic, Cruze, Focus, Malibu, Mazda 6

Maybe a Nox...

I forgot about Focus. That would be on the top of my list, if I were to buy new and someone destroyed my poor Passat.

Purchase price, and really- more truck than I currently use.

Well, I currently can't afford anything new, especially what I really want (GMC Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab). If the Envoy was totalled, I'd look into leasing an Acadia or Terrain for the time being until something I really want AND can afford comes along. If that wasn't possible, I think I'd look for a CPO Pontiac G8 (V6) or a well cared for used '05/'06 GMC Sierra or Yukon, or an Envoy (maybe even a Denali) from 2007+ with the 18" rims that I like :P

The wife on the otherhand has been wanting a new Buick LaCrosse; however, recently she has fallen in love with the new Ford Fiesta and would consider one of those (my vote would be for the Buick; I'd also recommend the Regal too).

But the real question everyone wants to know the answer to is if you have to replace your Passat, will you also replace the brontosaurus sticker by the fuel door?

Hahaha, doubtful... especially on virgin paint. Hopefully my next car won't need a (fossil) fuel door at all.

sarcasm, satchel.

regal would be on my list. extremely high, even if its not quick. Regal has one of the best interiors of any car out there. Like the LaCrosse, too. Maybe the v6 wins?

i do like the Kizashi enough to have it on the list. Despite the homerism When you consider the camrys of the world, to me its something i could drive as a bread and butter car every day and enjoy it. I won't proclaim the SX4 as 'best' or the Grand Vitara but I do like em. The GV is a bit trucky as its designed and it's still carlike enough and just a decent basic vehicle....needs a 6 speed auto in the worst way. SX4 is cheeky and steers quick / nicely and I like the CVT/paddles + 150hp.

my vehicle tastes are evolving. not much in the gotta have dept. I like even the current Malibu, but would only spring for it if the deal were good..

like the cruze....but only the eco, and really don't like the tight interior.

A ford Flex ecoboost titanium really has my interest lately. Taurus is prob too big so why not just get the Taurus crossover? MKs is nice. Already tired of the new Explorer!

Like the simplicity of the Outlander Sport.....it needs more ponies.

CTS coupe is HOT but you can't see out of it. Sort of defeats your ability to drive without incident. The CTS wagon to me is both hot and practical.

Like both the SRX and 9-4x, but not sure I would include them on the list. Same for the 9-5 and Volvo S60. If the C30 had a decent dashboard it may be on my list.

New Escort looked bland to me in person. I think that may be off the list. eek, meant Focus.

Mini Countryman intrigued me.

All BMW and Mercedes are repellent to me lately. Audis are boring. VW's are headed down a bad path.

Some Hyundais and Kias are ok, but not compelling. I could manage an Optima in a pinch.

KTM X-bow? Lotus Evora? Ferarri California? Boxster or Cayman?

A simple base Corvette would do it for me certainly.

It seems like as the mfrs put out more models, the less impressed I am with all the choices. Too many to pick from perhaps.

The new Jaguars really have the best presentation of all the luxury cars IMO. Absolutely fantastic. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, not much to stir any interest here. Chrysler's improved interiors really have me liking the 200 now, the vans, the Journey is nice now too but I wouldn't shop for one the crossover competition is too good. the 200's interior changes, v6, and price make it an interesting 'fallback' sleeper sort of car.

Regal and Flex might be the only 2 vehicles right now I would instantly be drawn to. And even then the Regal's lack of juice for the price might put me off a bit. Probably means a Flex Titanium ecoboost is my first choice by a sliver, at least today.

Well, you guys do get the Golf and the Verano is sort-of-an-Astra :P

I did not include the Astra GTC as it will only debut towards the end of 2011.

No contingency plans here.

Good to see I'm not the only one ;). lol

Though, I suppose my IMMEDIATE contingency plan would be to use one of my other cars as the daily ... until I decided what I wanted to buy next.....

Reg, I didn't have any visibility problems out of the CTS Coupe.... if you're going to have any problems it will stem from having too heavy of a right foot.

If the Tahoe quit, I'd be back in the wagon as a daily for a while. I hope to have the Mothertruck back together before too long so I can begin to pare down the fleet a bit.

If I were in a pinch, I'd scrounge CL for another killer find at a low cost.

I'm pretty good at finding interesting stuff on the cheap.
