American Honda Reports Record Breaking August Sales
New All-Time Records Set
American Honda sales increased 18.6 percent for August and set four all-time records for automobile sales including the best month ever with sales of 156,173 units, eclipsing the previous record of 147,253 set in August 2003. Year-to-date, American Honda sales are up 5.7 percent for the year to 991,754.

Honda Division sales increased 19.5 percent for August and set a new all-time record of 136,952 sales, breaking the previous record of 131,049 set in August 2003. Individual models that set all-time records include the Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid. Overall, Accord sales are up 17.2 percent to 46,153 and Civic sales are up 20.8 percent to 34,762.

"American Honda is on track for another record breaking year," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The arrival of the all-new 2006 Civic later this month combined with significant updates to the Accord and Pilot should continue to increase our momentum for the rest of the year and beyond."

August marks the seventh consecutive month of increasing Honda Division truck sales with 55,072 units, up 20.2 percent for the month. Odyssey posted gains of 20.3 percent with 16,201 sales and Pilot is up 14.4 percent to 13,971; both vehicles setting new August records. The Pilot has increased sales every month for 15 months in a row. The Ridgeline, on sale since March, had its best month yet with 4,308 units delivered in August.

Consumers purchased a record number of Honda hybrid vehicles in August. August sales of hybrids jumped 243.1 percent to 6,562 as Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid posted their best months ever. Year-to-date sales of Honda hybrid vehicles (Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid and Insight) rose 70.9 percent to 31,201. The Civic Hybrid posted sales of 4,146, up 119.5 percent; and the Accord Hybrid posted sales of 2,336.

Acura Division reported record August sales with total vehicle sales setting a record for the 22nd consecutive month with 19,221 units, up 12.5 percent from a year ago. The Acura TL, (up 4.8 percent), TSX (up 5.6 percent) and MDX (up 7.2 percent) all set new August records. Year-to-date, Acura sales have risen 11.2 percent to 144,075 compared to a year ago.

With all the clearance ads I saw for Honda over the last month, I'm suprised they weren't up more. 46k Accords is very impressive though, although I'm guessing there were some very good deals on 05s.

Some thoughts: -[non-Hybrid] Accord sales continue to slip, down 2.8% from last year. At this rate, Honda will sell roughly 390,000 this year. Still a good haul, but noticably down from past years. -How did the S2000 go from selling 555 units/month to 885 this year? -Furthermore: How did the Insight go from selling a paltry 23 units/month to 80 this year? Okay, okay, I know: The gas prices. Interesting to note, though: At the current rate of 444 units to-date, Honda will have sold 666 Insights by the end of the year. -Notice that the RSX's sales are off by 4.5% this month. I expect that trend to continue once the new Civic Si arrives. After all, why pay thousands more just for cowhide seats? -Sales of the RL have jumped a whopping 252.5%... Which isn't really that hard to imagine when you realize that you've been selling 242 RLs per month for years. -It must be the "Last call! Final Clearance!" sales event for the NSX: sales jumped from 5 last August to 25 this August! Hurry in now, and you too can have the most mediocre sports car in town!
