Simple questions:

When/Where was the first time you drove?

What did you drive?

For me:

August 1988, Holsopple PA

1979 Blazer (2-tone red/white)

While I was visiting my Aunt Thelma and Uncle Glen for a couple weeks, my Uncle Glen (who died 10 years later, the day the loan for my 1976 Monte Carlo was approved) took me with to do some errands. On the way back, instead of pulling into their driveway, he turned into the grassy field across the street, parked the Blazer and asked me if I wanted to drive. Naturally, I did. After that, my parents allowed me to move their '81 MC SC (now mine) out of the garage whenever we took that car.

A '93 Safari, in a trailer park somewhere in the eastern US, sometime around '95. (I was 12) It was a rutted dirt road, and I stayed in the rots despite the tree which had overgrown the road on the side. I put some minor scratches down the side when passing the branches. My dad didn't seem to mind too much - thankfully they came out with a wax.

July 1967

Indian Lake OH

1965 Buick Electra 225 /445 wildcat engine

That's 445lbs of torque and the turbo 400 was a granny 1st gear 4spd that year only on a chips & dust road and was told that if I chipped the paint I'd never drive again. I was 7yo. Great memory!

1989 or '90, sitting on my father's lap in his '85 Sunbird. I was around 6 or 7 years old. Later in the early 90's my father let me actually drive his '85 Mustang with him in the passenger seat around my block quite a few times, as soon as I could reach the peddles.

Summer of '84, Port Washington, Ohio.

Starting learning to drive around the family farm. Mostly backing in and out of the garages and barn, driving up and down the driveway to get the mail, newspaper, etc., and driving on our dirt well roads. It helped that the driveway is about 7/8 of a mile long and the well roads are over a mile, twisting and turning over the hills (150 acres of land).

Had a variety of my parents' cars to practice in--

'84 Lincoln Town Car

'84 Ford Escort diesel (learned manual shift with it's 5spd manual)

'83 Ford Thunderbird

'79 Dodge Power Wagon 4x4 pickup (scary numb steering, but great on the dirt well roads)

'69 Ford Mustang Sportsroof

'67 and '68 Mercury Cougars (most difficult--manual steering, 3spd manual transmission, manual drum brakes)

'61 John Deere tractor.. (great for off roading.. :)

I'd driven the tractor and the various Snapper riding mowers previously, as well as riding my Sears go-kart from age 7 until about 12, and steering in my father's lap when I was 7-8..

Didn't really do much practice during the school year when we are at our Florida house, but plenty in the summers..got my learner's permit the following summer.

Heh ... the first car I was legally able to drive was my parents' 1982 Chevette sedan ... automatic ... NO power steering or brakes. But, at least it was RWD ;).

Glad ya'll shared ... cool reading the stories and seeing what everyone drove for their first time. :)
