LED taillights are not that important. They often end up with weird bee-cube holed designs. Even the little Volkswagen Polo has them!

There are a few other advantages of using LED tail lights. They use far less power, they can be made much thinner. Who wouldn't want a larger trunk at no gain in size of vehicle.

But they are expensive. Eventually, it's a long ways away, they could be "printed". What will happen is just like the explosion in the TV industry, there will be massive cost reductions but along with that, there are a couple of competing technologies that may just blow the current processes into the weeds cost and performance wise.

There is a styling trend to facet the reflector to make it appear to be a LED system. I cannot see too many car companies using incandesant bulbs at one end of the market for a model and upgrading to LEDs at the other, it simply makes a mess out of the wiring system and the body controller functions,

I have to say, the one application I LOVED with LED taillamps was the previous Deville... where they had some sort of lens in front of them so it was just a block of bright light. Loved it.

I believe the 1997 lincoln mark VII used a neon bar, not a LED, though it was used for safety in that it lit up faster (said to add something like 30 or more feet of stopping room on average based on average reaction times and something like a 55 mph emergency stop)

that and it looks damned cool.

You're correct, the Mark VIII had a neon bar. And it looked AWESOME!

I remember complaints re: Lucerne like no optional rear sunshade. I don't see the problem with nitpicking since many people do in fact do that when they purchase cars.

Has Toyota done any good for F1? Think hard, you'll need to. So far all they've done is have a few team members investagated for theft of other teams designs.

So you say a few members are being investigated and in the other thread you obviously referred to the problem a couple of years ago where both Toyota and BMW Williams were found to have too large air restrictors. They were disqualified and life went on. You can find such things on everyone!

Okay... you first try to dismiss the Camry not having LEDs as being "not noticeable" or "not important" (even though they're just as much a vehicle image builder as HID headlamps) and now you're trying to twist it into a bash against GM. Several Camry competitors don't have LED tail lamps. That's not the point. Toyota is suppose to be the "Leader"... They aren't suppose to be waiting for everyone else to get it before they offer it (a generalization that's always associated with US Domestics).

Honda, Ford, & even Hyundai have all beaten Toyota to this.

As for GM products (excluding Cadillac), Saturn's Aura is suppose to have LED tail lamps along with the 6-sp auto when it starts production this summer.

Maybe I'm missing something......other than looking kinda cool when they light up, I don't see the big deal with LED taillamps....

At least with xenon lamps, the driver gets to enjoy the advantage of much better night time illumination of the road.....AND xenons look cool....

LEDs are beneficial for many reasons:

1) They use much less energy and generate much less heat.

2) They have a lifetime of several 10,000s of hours. You will never have to replace them during the lifetime of the vehicle.

3) The light up more quickly than filament bulb, thus allowing other drivers to know you are braking sooner and gives several extra feet of safety.

4) They allow a more unique lamp design.

Those are all reasons besides looking cool, which I agree, they do look cool.

It would be nice if the Aura offered HID though. It is illegal to retrofit a vehicle with HID unless the reflector housing was designed to hold and HID bulb. The glare is too much and it won't have the correct cutoff or beam pattern. Otherwise, I would have done it with my Intrigue (although I've seen it done on some Intrigues at cardomain.com). I instead ended up fitting some Hella driving lamps next to the stock fogs and put Toshiba Halogen Infra-Red bulbs in my car (used in the Dodge Viper Highbeams, Japanese Camry, and Avalanche). The stock 37 watt foglights suck and are so recessed in the bumper the light is mostly lost.

I would like to see more GM vehicles offering HID as at least an option besides Cadillac.

Toyota never solved the sludge issue, simply covered it up with a policy that still placed blame on owners.

BTW, better go research what happened to Team Toyota, yep a couple members were hauled in by German authorities for intelectual theft. Something about their car being a clone of a Ferrari, nope, didn't make it up. And yes F1 is in deep doo doo this year, nobody goes, races are broke, how exactly is one company buying a series a good thing?

And yet you say Toyota cheats! That's so far fetched that I didn't even consider that conclusion from you part, hence why I mentioned the restrictor problem - this is the only place where you can claim they have been cheating.

I didn't say that you have posted about this specific incident, I simply made the mistake to think that you used facts to back up your claims. I'm sorry for that baseless assumption.

The only place where I can see F1 being "in deep doo doo this year" is in USA where Michelin has taken blame for the scandal last year.

I can see that I have to point out Toyota is not Michelin. Toyota is not to blame for the scandal in USA. Got it?

F1 has increased its popularity last season because a single team isn't dominating anymore. We saw a lot of exciting fights mainly between Renault and McLaren, and even teams like Red Bull, Toyota and Ferrari sometimes had a chance to play with the new big guys. This is what fans of F1 missed before last season, and this is what we hope to see again this year. No team is trying to ruin that.

(PS. Do I really have to back this up with links to people saying the same, but whose integritation apparently is higher because they have published it on the net?)

So how are you going to twist a team accused of stealing technology as not cheating? I'm not the one accusing Toyota, the German courts on behalf of Ferrari are. This ought to be a real good back slide.

Oh BTW, Spa F1 race in trouble. one of the long term races.

Brazil could host two F1 races this year after Belgian GP is dropped

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Brazil could host two Formula One races this year after the Belgian Grand Prix was dropped from the schedule.

Rio mayor Cesar Maia said the city had been told by the organizers of the Pan American games that a F1 race could be hosted at the Nelson Piquet race track currently being remodeled for the 2007 games.

"If the Formula One says it's possible we will get serious and have all the necessary work done in six months," Maia said Thursday.

Motor racing's governing body said the Belgian GP was dropped so "extensive improvement" could be completed on the Spa course. It also said it hoped the course would be included on the 2007 calendar.

Brazil already hosts an F1 race at the Interlagos track in Sao Paulo.

BTW,one of Toyota's arms in NASCAR LOST a lawsuit brought by DCX about theft of property. I say that this is part for the course for Toyota.

The NASCAR case was against Bill Davis. To say it was Toyota who stole the plans for the prototype would be wrong. I can't say if any Toyota employee knew about Mr. Davis' affairs, but I doubt anything you are able to find out about it will change your point of view.

I wonder if I will become like you if the Chinese car makers enter motorsports. I'm fine with it. I just had to find out why you wrote that kind of posts in the other thread.

It is no secret that Bill Davis racing IS the original NASCAR base for Toyota.

I dare say it is not me that cannot see the obvious. The case Bill Davis lost is so similar to the case in F1 and what happened in IRL.....
