The "WTF am I doing up?" thread

Recommended Posts

It's 3 A.M. and I'm typing away on this place. I can't remember the last time I went to sleep at a reasonable hour when I didn't have to. I guess I'm just a night owl (insomniac). I usually fall asleep watching TV episodes I downloaded on my computer. Ah well, it's not like I have anything to do later today.

I'm readin some assclown make a fool of himself on the Bimmer forum I go to. It is on a thread about doing LS swaps in BMW's (and many other german cars for that matter). The general consesus is that unless you're a purist or whatever, then doing an LS swap is great and yields benefits in pretty much every category. It's lighter than BMW engines, revs high, easy to mod, cheap to mod, bullet proof, reliable, more compact, and produces more power and torque, and it's cheaper to do an LS swap on an e36 than it is to turbo them in some cases, which wont even yeild close to the same performance numbers. This guy is clearly uneducated on the subject and came in late to the thread, after it had already been established that people like him don't know wtf they are talking about.

typical americans, all of you seem to measure a cars worth by going in a straight line 0-60 or 1/4 mile. go to a track and you dont know what the fcuk to do. if american cars manufactures are so good then where the hell are they in formula one? formula one is the pinacle in motor racing, the technology is by far greater than in any other motorsport where are the americans no where. bmw should just put in a big displacement motor in a small car like the americans do and sell $h! loads of them but they make german cars which are 10 times better, the new vette is a 7 liter for fcuks sakes how is that thing good it makes 500 hp out of 7 liters bmw's old engine that is in the mclaren f1 that is almost 15 years old is only a 6.1 ltr and it makes 627 hp that is old technology for bmw but im sure new for american engineers. europeans focus on technology where americans focus on bang for the buck, eurpean technology is by far superior to american engineering period the $h! we have here is what we have learned from them, case in point the new vette motors are being built by one tech with his name sighned on the engine where do u think they learned that from um Porsche?Merceades. someone said gm won 5 awards in the last 7 years, bmw wins 5+ per year, and thats only bmw, merceades is doing some big displacement v8's and as usual has the most powerful high displacement v8 ever made their new 6.3 ltr v8 makes 500hp and it didnt need 7 liters.as far as the nurburgring times, u do realize that track is almost 14 miles long and a 10th is like a million years apart, yes the corvette may have posted close times to the CGT but it has a 7 liter motor the CGT is 5.7ltr and walter rohl said the CGT has the potential to dip below the 7 minute barrior as im sure the enzo does as well. i wish the germans italians would use old technology and put a big ass motor in a small car to shut all u dinasour yanks up.u want old technology by american, u want new technology by german or european.BMW's race cars and Porsche's race cars would and will kick the $h! out of anything that america has to offer, i would like to see the vetter c6r compete against the bmw sauber lol or porsches 10 years old gt1 car, or evan there old 962 or the 100+ race cars from porsche and bmw that would eat that piece of $h! alive.all you would see is lights crafted by a german

I dont know Nick ? He does have valid points but he doesnt understand any of the "dinosaur" points. I myself have been amazed that GM has turned the OHV V8 engine and Corvette into such a beast, but they have. Part of the battle is understanding the difference beween European and American approach and marketing over so many decades. I guess he does not know that the only car at LeMan that beat the C5R & C6R was the Audi A8? prototype. LeMans is the world theater, Im sure all are welcome to come play. If you dont break it, it proves you can take it. I dont favor out of brand engine swaps but thats just my personal preference, car guys have been doing it for decades.

Nick...

the biggest reason why I want to buy a BMW or Mercedes with a blown motor and throw in a GM pushrod V8 is to piss off arogant idiots like this guy.

Only a complete f@#king Idiot compares HP/Liter between two cars like the Corvette Z06 and McLaren F1. One costs $1.3 million dollars and the otehr one costs a whopping $69,999.

Jezus why don;t we have a discusion in which we can compare the fine points of a 1997 BMW 318tii and the 2006 Cadillac STS-V.

EDIT:

and here is a quote from one of the guys on there who is commenting on that dude...BTW, if you guys wanted to know, this is coming from a guy who owns a highly modded Noble M400 as a daily driver and has a new M5 on order for his wife as a daily driver. It sure comes as a suprise sometimes with all the anti-GM out there, the LS engines sure do get their fair share of respect from all crowds.

LS7:

505hp at 6300rpm

470 lb/ft torque at 4800rpm

458 lbs

Cost: $12,000 new

Efficiency: C6 Z06: 16 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, some tested to over 29mpg average

Packaging: smaller than BMW's 6 cyl offerings

BMW E60 M5 engine:

500hp at 7750rpm

383 lb/ft torque at 6100rpm

529 lbs

Cost: Not available as crate motor, but most likely well over $30k

Efficiency: E60 M5: 12 mpg city, 18 mpg highway, I have yet to see one average over 15-16mpg

Packaging: absolutely huge

So, comparing the best of both companies, the "low tech" LS7 has more horsepower, does it at a lower rpm, MUCH more torque at a much lower rpm, weighs less, is 1/3 the cost, is much more efficient, and is smaller.

Displacement is a meaningless number, only good for magazine racers. The LS7 is quite a bit smaller than the best M engine, yet, as shown above, is more powerful and more efficient, while costing tens of thousands less.

I respect the LSx motors, but would I want one in the new M5? Nah. It's a matter of character; the M5 is now a supersedan, no longer a muscled-up sports sedan, and the exotic-sounding V10 and 7-speed SMG contributes a lot to that image and feel.

However, the LS7 is arguably a better engine for the '99-'03 M5, as long as they can get the pitch to vary more.

Edit: And yes, it's 2:52... I'm staying up to do homework..

I was up because I'm a night person. Simple. Since I have to get up early, I don't get much sleep. That causes problems. I solve them by catching up on sleep every few days by going to bed at 8. It's a new thing, but it's working so far.

Anyways, I am usually here... Posting something that I probably shouldn't, but that's the joy of staying up late. :D

yea, that's just a comaprison between 2 top engines. I mean, in the discussion was mentioned how if it was just the regular I6 or an older engine or the 4.4 or somehting like that in an older car like an e36, then go for the swap, but of course you would never swap out the newer ///M engines. That's what makes them so special.

I find myself asking that very question ("WTF am I doing up?") on a nightly basis. I keep promising myself I'm going to get more sleep ... but, rarely do I :(.

Someway, somehow ... I need to break that....

Hi, my name is Cory and I'm addicted to C&G. It started 2 years ago... I would come here, talk about about cars, and make some of the best friendships. But then... it started overtaking me more and more. Soon, I couldn't stop coming here. I would be on all day and all night, even through school. It has caused me to get unbearable headaches from sleep deprivation, unthinkable grades from ignorance of school work, and unexplainable thoughts from interesting topics. If it wasn't for C&G... well... I'd be just another lonely soul without a life, literally. Sure, I wouldn't get those nasty headaches, terrible grades, or weird thoughts, but those aren't important. Cars are. :D

Another night of being a victim. I should sue myself. :P

Bleh... *yawn*... I was up at like 2:30 for some inexplicable reason... and I actually thought of coming here until I could sleep again. Instead, I walked around the dark house. The chill of being out from under the covers made me run back to bed after a few minutes and I was able to go back to sleep...
