I drove an early Miata once with the top up. It was painful.. I'm too big. Though I fit perfectly in a Boxster.

I just fit, but have to put the top down when I auto-cross because I don't fit with a crash helmet on.

Steve, one of my Miata club friends fits in a Miata fine with a crash helmet, and he is 6'4. I still can'[t figure THAT one out.

I'm 6'0", 225, and was probably 50 lbs lighter when I drove the Miata..it just seemed very tight to me..probably could have adjusted the seat more. I've ridden in a couple of ht and conv. TTs---I found them claustrophobic--couldn't see very well out the side windows.

A couple of sports cars I've driven that I fit in quite well are an Acura NSX (seat all the way back, my head touches the roof slightly) and the 993 era Porsche 911...I love the visibility out of 911s..great greenhouse.

same here....i get the "is that the new sunfire?" line a lot

Well, I guess if they hadn't moved Pontiac to alphanumeric names, it would likely have been badged as a Sunfire..

I get the typical "How do you fit in a Focus?!" comments all of the time.

But probably the worst one I've ever heard was when I worked at a GM Quick Lube (For about 2 weeks) My boss kept insisting that Hyundais were actually Hondas and would tell the employees to fill the oil accordingly.

Those guys were such idiots... I would NEVER trust them with my cars and I thought it was both sad and disgraceful that these people were representing GM.

EDIT: Oh, and I got the "your cars just compensate for your small penis" speech from an uber hippie idiot (architecture seems to have a lot of these people) at a party one time (talking about my Camaros) I got up and started to unzip, then told her "I'm 6'9", 350 pounds, do the math b*tch. I don't need to compensate for anything!" I was partially joking, but pretty pissed of. That's the dumbest spiel I've ever heard. Edited by FUTURE_OF_GM

FWIW - I get alot of "WTF is that...?"

Though I've had it called everything from a G6 to a Mustang to a Peugeot.... (nevermind that Peugeot hadn't imported a car to the US in decades...)

Not necessarily about the car itself, per se, but when I took the Cruise Missile (Bonneville) for an oil change, I told the shop manager that I got rid of the Pathfinder due to gas issues. He told me that I probably wouldn't see better in the Bonneville.

Mind you, I average 7 MPG higher than the Pathfinder's HWY rating... confused0071.gif happy.gif

While I was getting my haircut the haircut lady looks out the window-

Her: So is that your shiny red Beretta out there?

Me: Ahhh, you mean that red Pontiac Grand Prix sedan? Beretta's were made by Chevrolet and have 2 doors.

Her: Oh, I just saw it was red and sporty. I'm pretty bad with cars.

Me: I'd say so. Edited by REDO1GPGT

People think the 2 of mine have big blocks. And that they dont have computers. The funniest was when a friend said that a 1977-90 Caprice/Impala is a poorly engineered car and that a 1981-90 Ford Escort is better. Well friend guess what you see more of now? Or try getting it through to some people that the Pontiac has an Oldsmobile engine. I guess the confusion is understandable since the 307 was only used in the Bonneville in 1981. The 1977-80 used the Pontiac 301. I am told I got the better end of tht deal anyway. Edited by 2005 EquinoxLS

Today I went to Pep Boys to get light bulbs for my rear fog lights (2001 Aurora).

Me: I need the bulb number for my car.

Person 1: Ok what kind of car is it?

Me: 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora 3.5.

Person 1: An what bulb do you need

Me: Rear fog lights.

Person 1: Rear fog lights?

Me: Yeah

Moment of awkward silence .

Me: Yeah, in the back of the car.

Person 1: Did you add them yourself?

Me: No, they are in the back bumper, why?

Person 1: Can you bring a bulb in so I can see the number?

I go and get the bulb out of the car, come back in and the 1st guy went to lunch or something so another person came up and helped me.

Person 2: Your looking for the light bulb right?

Me:Yeah, 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora 3.5.

Person 2: What bulb is it?

Me: Rear fog lights ( hand her the bulb).

Person 2: They don't make cars with rear fog lights, is it a brake lamp or something?

Me: No its a fog light (point to my car parked outside).

Person 2 : I've never seen that before.

Me: Its an Oldsmobile thing.

Took 20 minutes but I got my bulbs. bluecutlass.gif

It's always amusing to see a European car from behind in foglamp weather... with one taillamp much brighter than the other... it actually took me a while to realize it was the rear foglamp, working as designed.

Eh, I cant really say I've noticed, partly because European imports aren't big sellers 'round here and partly because just about everyone else integrates them better than GM did with the eyesores on the Aurora.

Yeah... I remember wondering what up with that years ago. Another interesting feature on European cars (at least the Mercs I know) is the left or right parking lights setting (parking lights turn on on one side only).

The fog lamps break up an otherwise huge expanse of plastic, and as I found out today makes for a fun bit of trivia at the local auto parts store.

Plenty of German cars sold in the USA have rear fog lights.

Almost all Audis from the past two decades have rear fog
lights, Porsche, my Mercedes has 'em, as did our old 123.

Hmm...I've seen some European cars with them separate, but on my sister's W126 and W124 they must be integrated into the taillight clusters. I'll have to read the manual and see how to activate 'em.

they dont pay attention to anything you say they just do what mr. computer tells them to...thats why whenever i have to (unfortunately) go to pep boys or autozone i research my part on their website first and get the part numbers and then i go in and hand them the print out...saves me the time and effort lol

A parts guy at Autozone once insisted that the only pickup truck GMC made was the Sierra. It was amusing to point out the window at our bright yellow Sonoma with its shiny red GMC badge and ask him what he thought of that.

My friend's sister was surprised when I told her my car was an Oldsmobile, and when I asked her why, she said "it just doesn't look like an Oldsmobile." I asked her why she thought that, and she said "I dunno, I always thought Oldsmobiles were big, ugly brown boxes; yours isn't." Edited by DetroitNut90

I have gotten this alot "nice Grand Prix" line with my 2005 Bonneville SLE but I guess since they cleaned up the body there is no V8 badge like on GXP (no striker kick panels) I could see it but even so... I paid for a Bonneville (the first real Pontiac and most expesnsive one not the lesser GP)... rolleyes.gif dry.gif

As for my Torrent it has been called an Aztek... And that really ticks me off...
Someone called it an Equinox too, I about killed them...

Well, you'd better take a chill pill because I'd venture to say that about half the population doesn't know anything more about cars than how to turn the ignition key. Once upon a time, when I was a car valet in a luxury hotel, quite a few people (mostly women, I have to say) could tell me little more about their car than what color it was and how many doors it had.
When you work in the car business, you get stupid people remarks about cars all the time. You learn to shrug it off.

Yeah, it's one of those things I realized long ago is that most people don't have the same level of interest in cars as I do..to most people, the details of their car are obscure as the details of the washer or dryer. Yet I know lots of people that can tell me lots of detail about the specs of their cell phone, computer, their TV, their home theatre components, etc yet seem to know little about their car beyond the brand name and year...I run into a few car enthusiasts now and then, but they usually are very brand-specific in their interest and knowledge, rather than a broad interest car geek.. smile.gif Edited by moltar

Ohhhhh, a different grille, thats such a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig difference, anyone who overlooks it is an idiot. And the Bonneville (in some trims) is easy to mistake for a Grand Prix, the GTO looked a lot like the last Grand Prix coupe, enough that I mistook one for the other a time or two, so yeah, chill out.

One of my favorites was the "gas guzzler" label for the '76 ... by a lady driving a huge Ford SUV ... and the same label for my '87 MC LS for the guy driving the Toyota Tundra...and showing him how good of gas mileage my '87 MC LS gets!

I'd go a lot farther than that: probably half the population has the curiousity of a gnat. They wouldn't know a science journal if it fell on them, nor an atlas or a decent political treatise.
Color me wierd, but two of the greatest discoveries in my life was when I learned about photons and how ordinary lightbulbs work and why in the life cycle of a star they can only 'burn' up the atomic table as far as FE, then no matter what the mass of the star it will have to implode, resulting in a nova. I suppose that makes me very wierd.

Forget about explaining a 4 stroke engine to the average person.

At least I don't drive a Prius that could be confused with a person making a smug "typically" liberal statement vehicle that it is. You know there is a big difference and in daylight it is very easy to tell the difference from the front or back on a Torrent. The Bonneville has a different profile and wheels and a chrome Bonneville badge out back so you know what it is. You prolly could confuse a Prius with a tree. I am glad you have two real cars made by great American compaines. neenerneener.gif Buy American. Also the extra cost of a Prius over a Focus or Cobalt and you will have hard time ever seeing your money back.
