as i have stated before, i am 25 and have never wanted for a American before. i currently drive a Maxima (which i have loved to the bone for all 198,000 miles. but soon i will be purchasing a new auto and i want to take advantage of the GMS (employee) pricing i receive from my father in law. the only American car that has struck me with a gasp has been the Chrysler 300 SRT-8, but for me and my family (wife and 5 week old) it just isnt a realistic option at this point. As many have read my review of the Lucerne, i loved what i saw and drove. a black on black CXS with all the chrome trim was the best looking GM car i have seen to date, with the exception of the CTS-V. from the fogs to the wheels, to the rear--i loved the looks and feel of this car. it road very quiet and smooth and offers every little option that i want. also the nicest leather i had felt in a car in a looooong time, maybe ever. at 40k plus discounts (especially by the time i buy) i expect to pay around 35k. The impala is another car that i wouldnt have been caught dead in the last few years--just due to the fact it gets lost with every other car at the airport rental place as well with every salesman in America that happens to not be driving a Taurus. Upon seeing a 2006 Impala for the first time and not knowing what it was i was quickly impressed. after that i knew i had to take a test drive of the SS model. loved it!! for a Chevy car, i thought it was a giant step forward. the black on black SS had nice leather seats, which lacked true sport seat bolstering, but where comfotbale. the dash looked tons better then the old corporte dash and the car drove awsome for a 303HP FWD car. tons of fun. i thought the torque-steer was not as pronounced as i thought it would have been, and i guess i am not a total enthusiast bc torque steer just doesnt bother me "that" bad. maybe its from driving a lot of FWD cars in my 9 years of driving. back seat room was dissapointing for how big the car is, but the back is mainly for a baby seat and i was also impressed with the fold-down seats that really open a lot of storage space up, coupled with the trunk. hated the SS wheels upon first site, but now love em, especially the polished version. Car fully optioned was 32,500 amd with discounts i expect to get around 28k. in short, Buick Lucerne CXS: more refined, distinguished, lux oreinted, and better preceived quality, better looks, and tons of goodies Chevy Impala SS: raw power, more fun to drive. less of the good stuff (goodies), not as much rear leg room, less $$ anyway, sorry for the long drawn out glimpse at my comparo, but what would you do?

Being I'm a Buick fan, I vote Lucerne. You're going to want a cushy, smooth, quiet ride to lull the baby to sleep in the back seat. ;) Seriously though, I prefer a tad of luxury... the CXS would give you that :)

Minarets My opinion is the Buick Lucerne and here is my reasoning. What you're missing in power with the Lucerne is a mere 35 HP and roughly 30 ft-lbs of torque. I wouldn't consider the Impala THAT much more powerful. Before the new Impala and the Lucerne and the LaCrosse I considered that if I wasn't going to buy a Regal (which was my first choice at the time) I'd want the Impala. However now I have lost some respect for the Impala because it had a very lukewarm update and the vehicle will look dated very quickly. I can't say the same for the Lucerne. The only reason I'd say don't go for the Lucerne is if you just can't afford it. But a black on black Lucerne CXS will always draw some awe to your vehicle as where the Impala is hard to draw even a glance. Also you'd be doing Buick a favor because these are uncertain times for Buick. Chevy doesn't need your money. Buick doesn't have just better percieved quality, it really is there and you should know that since you sat in a Lucerne. The Impala will show its cheapness very quickly on you and I can't say the same for the Lucerne. Go for the Lucerne. The Impala just doesn't have any style anymore. The front end is indistinguishable from the Monte Carlo, look for yourself. Plus with your family you'll be happy you have the room in the Lucerne when you need it, and it's not that the Lucerne can't perform almost nearly as well. Plus the goodies will keep you interested in the car a lot longer. The Impala is a no-go. Definitely go for the Lucerne. Obviously I'm a Buick-man, but I think I gave some fair reasons.

Minarets, I was just out on my lunch break, and spotted both a new Impala and new Lucerne on the road. The Impala is an attractive facelift, but the Lucerne says "class" to me. The Lucerne is a definite step up. Were I lucky enough to be in the market, I'd be pursuing a Lucerne.

Excellently put, that's what I was trying to say... the Lucerne is a classy vehicle, hands down. Plus, it'd be nice to have more of them on the road, show those beauties off :)

I'd go with a Lucerne as well, just from this observation: yesterday in tourist-crazy Las Vegas, I counted about thirty-five '06 Impala rentals, but only one Lucerne, a white CX model with dealer plates.

Theres obviously a huge cost difference but if money is not an issue there is nothing to consider. Shorty after becomeing a father I found my taste changed rapidly. For example, and this goes back 15+ years. I always one day wanted a Camaro, and used to thing BMW and Mercedes were special, then I bought my first Buick and suddenly forgot all about Camaros, BMW's, Mercedes and all that hoopla and became a Buick Oldsmobile Chrysler only man.

Now as we are looking toward the empty nest we are again thinking more about more sporty cars and less importance on back seat and sensible but cars like the CXS's are the best of both worlds.

If money WAS an object, I'd take an ($30K) Impala SS over a decently-equipped ($30K) Lucerne CX V6. If money was not as big of an object, I'd DEFINITELY take a $39K Lucerne CXS over a $30K Impala SS.
