November 29, 2005 If you’re looking for a new centrepiece for your new entertaining area, the new 360 degree LED display from Dynascan offers exactly that – quite literally. Taiwanese-based Dynascan has been developing the 360 degree LED display for several years now and it is initially being used as an advertising medium in shopping centres and public areas, with an outdoor version just launched too. The first time you see one of the screens you’ll understand what the fuss is about – the quality, colour, contrast and definition is extraordinary and the screen is absolutely huge – the third generation of the new LED screens is being introduced at present with the largest being a 2.5 metre high, 5.46 metre circumference screen and capable of being viewed clearly from 30 metres away. Interestingly, the screens can actually display one image around the full 360 degrees, so it would be possible to use them as output for a 360 degree camera. In their commercial configuration the screens are usually configured as three identical images, with each image claiming 120 degrees of the surface. Two 180 degree screens is also possible and … if the ambitious Tholos Project hadn’t died, it would have had an ideal screen.

Interestingly, the screens can actually display one image around the full 360 degrees, so it would be possible to use them as output for a 360 degree camera.

This has so many commercial applications its nuts.

I think he meant useless from a consumer standpoint, as opposed to commercial. Just do the reverse, where you stand in the middle and it surrounds you. X-Box 3!

Yes. You could set up a small, circular room with a circular sofa and this in the middle. An interesting home theatre.

Um, up until the recent flatscreens, all TVs were curved... I think it would be a nifty home theatre. Everyone could sit in a circle and watch it and goof off. It would be fun.

They weren't curved that much. It'd have to be fun over picture quality (not quality in the aspect of high definition, but just in viewing angle - there's a reason people are going to flat screen). I could see doing something where you sit in the middle of a screen that curves around you, though, as mentioned before. Edited December 12, 2005 by PurdueGuy

Another over glorified new technology. Flat screens take up a shitload less room and probably cost less even in the Plasma variety. To me a moving billboard is useless... not something to get all excited about . I've already have to put up wiht WAY too much advertising... more is just that much MORE annoying.

I was referring and should have clarified that in the consumer market this thing is DOE... circular room? Please, what the heck are the advantages? It's bulky and azwkward wiht the convex image curving away fomr the viewer.


Will this be etched on the bottom of the screen?

That's pretty neat. It kinda reminds me of the movie 'Minority Report' where they had advertising screens on curving walls and the ceilings of tunnels.

The weird part is, I was just thinking about something like that the other day. I never knew they were out there developing it. I think its a good idea. Who wants to sit at a 30 degree angle to watch tv anytime there is more then 3 people watching it? Not me. This solves that problem Edited December 12, 2005 by CaddyXLR-V

I think this is an incredible entertainment toy. I predict, one day this will be in many people's homes. I would get one in a chevy heartbeat.
