MONTVALE, N.J. — So maybe now we know what the "R" in R-Class stands for as Mercedes-Benz's new sports tourer is to be the official car of the Rolling Stones' North American tour.

The R-Class is being featured on location at each concert arena on the 60-date tour, which started this week in Boston. And Mercedes-Benz USA has commissioned a one-off "signature" edition of the R-Class, which will be signed by each member of the Rolling Stones and auctioned for charity.

"This initiative partners the energy and creativity of the world's most legendary band with the automotive industry's most legendary brand," gushed Carol Goll, general manager of brand experience marketing at Mercedes-Benz USA. The U.S.-built R-Class, a six-seater SUV-wagon "crossover," will go on sale in the fall, with prices starting around $50,000.

Mercedes' sponsorship of the tour also includes a "Rock the R" online sweepstakes at which entrants will have the chance to win two first-class round-trip airline tickets and accommodations to see the Rolling Stones during the European leg of the tour.

The Mercedes deal is not the first car company tie-in for the Stones — in the 1990s their Voodoo Lounge tour was sponsored by Volkswagen, which created a special Rolling Stones limited-edition Golf, sold in Europe.

What this means to you: The R-Class is the ideal vehicle for the well-off, young-at-heart 60-year-old; perhaps Mick and Keith are the model customers!
