For Release: DECEMBER 9, 2005 Detroit - General Motors has announced today, December 9, that it will acquire Northwest Airlines. GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner confirmed the purchase plans. Wagoner states: "We are very excited with the prospect of this new alliance." When pressed, Wagoner indicated that it was actually a contractual relationship between Northwest and one of its suppliers that was of particular interest to the Corporation. Although he declined to name the supplier, another GM Executive did. Mark LaNeve, group vice president of GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing indicated that contract with Kimberly-Clark Corporation was the prime motivation. LaNeve said "With Northwest's virtually unlimited supply of Motion Discomfort bags, we will be able to include one with every Silverado Z-71 Sportside as standard equipment." Shares of Northwest traded $4.71 higher while GM shares lost $13.91. General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), the world's largest vehicle manufacturer, employs about 325,000 people globally.
