December 6, 2005 GM names its displacement-on-demand "Active Fuel Management" Detroit, Michigan – General Motors has trademarked Active Fuel Management as the name for its displacement-on-demand technology, beginning with the 2007 5.3-litre V8-equipped Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The name will be applied to all model-year 2007 vehicles equipped with the technology. Active Fuel Management enables the engine to automatically and seamlessly operate on only half the engine's cylinders when full power is not needed, improving efficiency by as much as 12 per cent in some vehicles. GM currently offers the system in nine models, and by 2008 it will be used in more than two million GM vehicles. It was first introduced in the 2005 V8-equipped Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL and Envoy XUV. For model year 2006, it is available in 5.3-litre V8-equipped versions of the Buick Rainer, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, TrailBlazer EXT, Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS, GMC Envoy and Envoy XL, Pontiac Grand Prix GXP and Saab 9-7X. GM Promised that the 3.9 V6 would have DoD.  What happened?

Balance issues are what I head. The Honda DOD system utilizes active engine mounts to reduce the vibration transmission. But GM doesn't have the cash to use this on the G6 so the peices are there but not active. I think we will see active displacement on the HV V6s soon but not until the bugs are ALL worked out, we don't need for GMs mainstream V6 to be thought of in the same light as the 4-6-8 V8 or the Olds diesels of the past.

I agree with that! Those were indeed disasters and many customers have not forgiven GM for the initial issues and the poor effort in customer service to correct them after the fact.

Now now... As with stalling Priuses, a *NEW* technology, the manufacturer should be given a chance right? Oh, wait, that's only if it's Japanese..... My bad. Seriously though, I liked the name Displacement on Demand better. And for god's sake GM, ADVERTISE!!!!! I didn't even know that D.O.D. had spread accross the line that quickly.

I've seen 9-7X print ads that mention DoD... that are marred by "15/20 MPG city/highway" in the footnotes. Most of its competitors, say an X5 4.4i (16/22), do better even without the technology. Edited by empowah
