And if GM is globalizing production, then it should be some amount cheaper to do things for all makes, and the minimum sales necessary for profitability should therefore be lower than previous, right?

Remember... Buick-Pontiac-GMC should count as one division (sales channel), together.

No, I really don't think it should. They are still seperate brands as far as I'm concerned. Sales are still calculated seperately. There are still dealers that don't sell all three. Once all that happens... Maybe it could, but my stubborn ass won't. I'm not and never was a fan of that merger.

Oh, come on. Buick and Pontiac aren't full lines anymore. They're just pieces of a group. Don't you think GM channeled them up with GMC to prop them up while they get their product straightened out?

FYI, they still kind of are full lines. They won't be in the future, though. I don't think they ever should have in the first place either. Pontiac nor Buick needs to sell anything but cars, IMO. Especially Pontiac, the supposed performance brand. GM f**ked them up, not the seperate brands themselves.

Again, once those three things change, it could be done, but not as is.

They should counted B-P-GMC as one division. Tally up all the sales. Why not? Toyota lies about the 'Corolla' Matrix every single month. What's the difference?

I was not aware that Buick and Pontiac were unprofitable at least until this year or last. Hard to tell now with all GM's losses being thrown into this years financial reports, makes everything look bad. But the mistakes were made years ago. This is a foolish thread and is once again aimed at destroying makes of cars that are the reason some of us are here in the first place. I think several of you are confusing brand image with brand profitability. The last time GM reported which divisions in the US were profitable and which weren't: Non Profitable: Oldsmobile, SAAB, Saturn Profitable: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac-GMC, HUMMER *************** And sorry BV... Pontiac profitability is no longer figured alone. GMC & Pontiac were merged into the PONTIAC-GMC Division back in 1996. One won't go away without the other. Buick's sales channel has been "aligned" and merged with Pontiac-GMC, but (as far as my knowledge) they're still two separate divisions. Buick General Manager is Steve Shannon. Pontiac-GMC General Manager is John Larson. The catch is, Steve Shannon reports to John Larson... go figure. <_<

Well... I said nothing about Pontiac profitability being seperate... :P

But yes, I know all of that. I'm just making a point that it should be seperate because of the reasons I pointed out. It makes no sense to do that other than to hide one brand's problems while bringing down another. Anything dealer with this sort of stuff should be seperate as they are seperate brands. Sorry... but I don't want to read future reports that PBG sales are down 8% while Pontiac actually posted gains or vice versa. I'm stubborn and don't like change.. what do you expect? :huh: :D

I guess Pontiac-Buick-GMC are no different than Chevrolet and Chevrolet trucks. I am happy that they are grouped. It means that Pontiac will not have a truck or a Luxary barge, Buick will not have a truck or a sporty car, GMC without cars. The way they should be IMHO. Lumping them, to a certain extent cuts down on badge engineering.

I'd say Chevy and Cadillac are the most profitable. Other than that.. guessing game. I'd say Pontiac is up there because I see a HELL of a lot of them, but idk...

how can we make this topic when GM hasnt been profitable for a year now? i'd say GMAC is the most profitable GM Division... but that is not exactly the question i dont think

It's difficult to say because there are shared costs in between divisions. Also the notion that shutting down an unprofitable division would increase GM's profitability is not necessarily correct, because those divisions may be paying down the fixed costs of technology and labor even if they don't post absolute profits. Then again, you have phenomnon like Saturn that may lose money but which help GM make money in the long term by pulling new customers into the brand. Overall, the issue of "which brand is profitable" is a fools debate because it's so hard to quantify.
