DETROIT – Cadillac unveiled the 2007 Escalade, the next generation of the iconic luxury SUV. The all-new Escalade establishes a new level of refinement and style, delivered with an instantly recognizable form that introduces the next step in Cadillac’s ongoing renaissance.

Based on General Motors’ all-new full-size SUV platform, the ’07 Escalade features new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems deliver the most powerful and most efficient luxury SUV in the segment, led by a new 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine with variable valve timing technology delivering 403 horsepower (301 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm).*

“The 2007 Escalade represents the next phase of Cadillac’s product renaissance – a renaissance that was launched by the previous-generation Escalade,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. “Since its inception, Escalade has been an icon – the vehicle discerning customers aspire to own. The ’07 model raises the bar with exceptional exterior style, interior refinement, increased performance and enhanced ride and handling smoothness.”

Cadillac Escalade will be available in the first quarter of 2006, with extended-wheelbase Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT models to be introduced later in the year. The Escalade family is one of the most aspirational nameplates in the industry and attracts the youngest customers in Cadillac’s portfolio of automobiles.

Cadillac Escalade will also be sold outside North America , thus strengthening Cadillac's global portfolio.

Distinctive design

Escalade has a sleeker, cleaner and more athletic form with improved aerodynamics while appearing smaller in stature. It is instantly identifiable and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents.

“One look and there’s no doubt it’s an Escalade,” says Taylor . “The ’07 Escalade introduces the future of Cadillac design, which matches leading edge forms and styling with superior craftsmanship and attention to detail.”

Details in elements such as wraparound fascias, styled mirrors and integrated running boards enhance Escalade’s flowing design and bolster the feeling of refinement. All major sheetmetal and body components are new and feature crisp, taut lines. The sleek, toned look includes a faster windshield angle of 57 degrees, which flows gracefully into the roofline. This also improves aerodynamic performance to a segment-best 0.363 coefficient of drag, which helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise.

The bold Escalade front-end design features a Sixteen-inspired egg crate grille with detailed chrome elements and a prominent wreath-and-crest insignia. The grille is flanked by tri-element headlamps that use High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting technology, with available IntelliBeam automatic headlamp beam control. The sides of the vehicle look fresh and clean with new doors, a single-piece window surround and seven layers of chrome accents. Rear-end styling also is distinct and is highlighted by LED taillamps, LED-lit center high-mount stop light (CHMSL), chrome accents and an integrated trailer hitch cover.

Larger standard and available wheels, including standard 18-inch wheels and available chrome 22-inch wheels, are tailored to fit the wheel openings. This precise wheel-to-body relationship – enabled by a wider track – gives Escalade a more athletic presence and lowered stance.

Refined, spacious interior

All-new interior styling is a cornerstone of the new Escalade. The flowing, luxurious interior is complemented with premium materials and a distinct layout not shared with any other GM full-size SUV. The cabin also is more spacious, with an instrument panel that is lower and moved forward in the vehicle. This warm and inviting interior comes in two colors: Ebony and Cashmere .

Escalade’s exclusive interior includes a unique instrument panel, instrumentation gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting, Nuance leather-covered seats, leather-covered door trim and center console, fabric-covered interior pillars and an available heated steering wheel.

The two-tone Cocoa-on-Cashmere appearance gives Escalade the aura of a roomy luxury sedan. The upscale styling is complemented by new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. The harmonious color and grain of the materials were carefully selected to provide a premium feel as well as durability. Flush-mounted controls and radios, with almost imperceptible gaps, convey precision and integration.

Attention to detail is evident throughout the vehicle. There is no visible hardware to greet occupants when the doors are opened and there are no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have “close-outs” that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. Fasteners and hardware are also covered when the seats are folded.

When it comes to convenience and capability, Escalade delivers with a new industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat, as well as a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button. The remote starting feature is standard and is integrated with the tri-zone automatic climate control system, allowing the interior to be heated or cooled when the vehicle is remotely started.

An enhanced array of audio, infotainment and safety options also includes an available 8-inch touch-screen navigation system, as well as a DVD system with large 8-inch flip-down screen. A segment-first Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system is integrated into the new family of radios that play DVD audio, DVD video, CD audio, CD videos, MP3s and XM Satellite Radio.

The new Escalade is more spacious. More fore/aft front seat travel provides the segment’s leading legroom for front-seat passengers. Second-row seat legroom and knee room, and third-row seat headroom are increased over the previous models. The second- and third-row seats also have more shoulder room – a feat accomplished while also offering standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bags. Cargo room has increased by 4.2 cubic feet (118.9 liters) behind the second-row seats and 2.3 cubic feet (65.1 liters) behind the third row. The third-row seats fold flat and are easily tumbled forward or removed for maximum cargo area. Also, the unique, two-compartment center console is the segment’s largest. The glove box offers 25 percent more storage space than previous models and features damped opening operation that reinforces Escalade’s overall feeling of refinement.

Driving experience

With a reputation as one of the segment’s top performers, the ’07 Escalade builds on its heritage with a combination of performance, responsiveness and comfort that channels the vehicle-wide refinements into an effortless driving experience.

A new 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (301 kw)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* is exclusive to Escalade. This all-aluminum engine uses v ariable valve timing (VVT) to optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique, dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead-valve engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves. Aluminum cylinder heads and an aluminum engine block offer reduced mass, an attribute that supports improved vehicle weight distribution and improved fuel economy.

A new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched with the 6.2L engine. One of the industry’s most advanced automatics, the 6L80 features clutch-to-clutch shifting and has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. The 6L80’s six forward gears have smaller “steps” between them, compared to a conventional four-speed automatic, which bolsters both performance and the feeling of smoothness. Shorter steps between the gears help the transmission quickly find the best gear for the vehicle speed and road conditions, with less back-and-forth hunting on grades – a trait that is particularly helpful when towing. Also, the 6L80 has Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down) capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

A stronger frame and chassis supports the more powerful powertrain and enables the Escalade’s exceptional responsiveness and ride and handling smoothness. A new, fully boxed frame offers 49 percent increased torsional stiffness and a 35-percent improvement in beaming frequency, compared to previous models. In addition, all front and rear suspension attachment points are stiffened for improved suspension performance and reduced road input into the vehicle. The frame supports wider front and rear tracks – approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) wider in front and 1 inch (25.4 mm) wider in the rear – that enhance stability and driving confidence through a more secure road feel and a lower center of gravity.

The front suspension consists of an all-new coil-over-shock design that delivers linear, solid and unwavering ride and handling characteristics on all road surfaces. Also new is a rack-and-pinion steering system that provides precise and responsive control and superior on-center feel. A highly refined five-link rear suspension complements the front suspension for great road isolation and vehicle handling.

Larger, four-wheel disc brakes and an all-new ABS system from Bosch help ensure braking performance. Larger vented front and rear brake rotors, 50-percent stiffer dual-piston calipers, longer-life brake pads and the new system’s design result in enhanced pedal feel, reduced brake noise, predictable, linear brake response and shorter braking distances. A new Bosch 8.0 next-generation four-channel ABS system is also standard. The ABS system works with the standard StabiliTrak stability control system’s new rollover mitigation technology. This software algorithm technology uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip-up” and apply appropriate brake force to help prevent such events.

Enhanced driving control and ride smoothness are offered with the standard Road Sensing System, which uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to make nearly instantaneous damping adjustments. The system “reads” the road and anticipates the best damping rates.

Safety and security

The ’07 Escalade is designed to be among the industry’s safest and most secure vehicles, with numerous safety systems and crash-avoidance technologies. New occupant protection features include head curtain side air bags with rollover protection for all seating rows and an industry-first 360-degree front safety belt pretensioner activation system.

The roof-mounted head curtain air bag tethers hold the bags in place longer for increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as the side doors, provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The exclusive rear pretensioner sensors can trigger the front seat pretensioners during a rear-end collision, holding the occupants firmly in place and helping to prevent whiplash injuries.

The myriad of crash sensors are complemented by crash-avoidance systems such as standard StabiliTrak with rollover mitigation. The electronically controlled system continuously measures the side angle of the vehicle and, if a rollover appears imminent, it can deploy the side curtain air bags before the crash occurs. The 360 degrees of detection capability allows the electronically controlled safety systems to deploy in a greater variety of situations.

Crash avoidance is bolstered through enhanced driver control dynamics such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as a more responsive suspension – including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. The Escalade is built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that is designed for improved crash energy management. The front frame section, for example, has improved crush dynamics that provide the equivalent of 17.7 inches (450 mm) of additional crush space – in a vehicle that is only approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) longer than its predecessor. The frame also is designed for improved vehicle-to-vehicle height compatibility in the event of a frontal impact with a smaller vehicle.

Additional safety and security features include:

* Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
* Standard dual-stage driver and front passenger frontal air bags
* Automatic Occupant Sensing System turns off front passenger air bag if a small occupant is detected in the seat
* Standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bags for all seating rows
* Standard front safety belt pretensioners with activation sensors in the front, sides and rear of the vehicle
* 5-star frontal impact ratings anticipated
* Standard tire pressure monitoring system
* Standard rain-sensing wiper system
* Standard heated washer fluid system
* Standard Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist that can detect certain stationary objects in the rearward path of the vehicle and send a visual and audible warning
* Standard perimeter lighting
* Standard ABS
* Standard Road Sensing Suspension
* Available rearview camera system that can visually detect people or objects in the rearward path of the vehicle
* Standard pull-up/push-down power windows

Escalade comes with the Generation 6 OnStar system (with a one-year Directions and Connections service plan). The system includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants and summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen (ability to locate stolen vehicles varies with conditions).

Craftsmanship

Superior craftsmanship and refinement permeate the all-new Escalade. In areas that can be seen and touched, as well as those that cannot, an unprecedented amount of engineering and design resources were devoted to developing cohesive, segment-leading levels of quality, quietness and attention to detail.

Tighter tolerances and higher quality materials provide visual and tactile examples of the vehicle’s craftsmanship, while a firmer, more robust chassis enables class-leading smoothness and quietness. In short, every aspect of Escalade’s performance – whether under the hood or inside the passenger compartment – is designed to reflect a new standard of Cadillac craftsmanship.

Exterior craftsmanship

Escalade has one-piece, body-color front and rear fascias that wrap around into the fenders, creating a sleeker, more integrated appearance. Chrome accents enhance the luxury appearance of the Escalade while adding distinction and exemplifying the vehicle’s attention to detail.

The fascias cover the bumper beams, eliminating the conventional SUV look of a bumper separated from other body components. This seamless design enables improved tolerances between components, such as the fascia and fenders. Hood-to-fender gaps also are reduced, as are the gaps surrounding the headlamps and grille components. While contributing to the Escalade’s more refined appearance, the tighter tolerances also enhance aerodynamics, which optimize fuel economy and reduce wind noise.

From the side, Escalade has a more integrated appearance . The doors extend down and wrap over the rockers for a cleaner, “one-piece” appearance, and the rearview mirrors are styled for improved aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. New grab-style door handles are designed to stand off from the edge of the vehicle and offer easier, refined actuation. Door closing is effortless and quiet, sealing with a reassuring sound that reinforces Cadillac’s quality reputation.

Standard running boards are integrated with the exterior design themes, and optional power articulating running boards (available later in the model year) automatically extend when the doors are opened. When not in use, the boards retract inward, giving the vehicle a sleeker, more refined appearance.

At the rear of the Escalade, gaps are reduced around the liftgate and fascia, creating a refined and precise appearance. The liftgate-to-quarter panel and liftgate-to-taillamp tolerances have also been reduced with a new, one-piece door ring – or “D-ring.” The quarter panels, underbody and roof are all welded to the D-ring, providing more precise fits and a stronger rear body. Also, the standard towing package receiver hitch features an Escalade-exclusive integrated hitch cover that is easily removable, but offers a smoother appearance when in place.

Interior refinement

The 2007 Escalade has an interior environment all its own. It benefits from the close attention to detail designed and engineered into every facet of the cabin and is highlighted by flush surfaces and tight tolerances on the instrument panel, center stack, clusters and other components.

Most gaps on the instrument panel and cluster have been narrowed to 0.5 mm or less. Some gaps have been totally eliminated. Flush-mounted accessories and controls, such as the climate control/radio center stack, create a seamless, more finished appearance – appearing as a single unit rather than components stacked together. Similar attention was given to concealing fasteners and metal structural components of all folding seats. New seat “close-outs” provide a more finished, crafted appearance to the seats when they are in a folded or tumbled-forward position. The seat tracks also are concealed with covers.

Large aluminum door sill plates greet occupants when they enter Escalade. The sill plates are longer and wider than previous models, providing more complete coverage of the sill area and a more finished appearance.

Both the Cocoa-on-Cashmere and Ebony-on-Ebony interior color schemes dramatically enhance the appearance and aura of the new Escalade’s interiors. The upscale styling is complemented by premium materials like brushed aluminum, wood and cast skin trim that are soft to the touch and have low-gloss finishes. Escalade’s instrument panel, upper door trim and armrests are covered and wrapped in a soft foam-backed cast skin covering that is durable and rich looking, while providing a luxurious, high-quality feel.

Also, the color and grain of materials were carefully selected to provide a premium look. Upscale details also include LED backlighting for instrumentation and chrome accents on gauges and vents. The comprehensive result of these elements is a rich, harmonious appearance throughout the interior. Escalade’s refinement also is evidenced in the operation of items such as glove box and center console lid doors, which are spring-damped. The center console’s cupholders are hidden, too, providing a cleaner interior appearance until they’re needed.

Design

Cadillac Escalade’s distinctive design is the cornerstone of Cadillac’s renaissance and an icon of luxury SUVs . The all-new 2007 model marks the next step in Cadillac’s expressive design language, with sleeker, detailed and more refined styling – an enhanced yet instantly recognizable form that cannot be mistaken for anything but Escalade.

The ’07 Escalade design is influenced by the Sixteen concept vehicle, including a more finely detailed egg crate grille with chrome details and prominent front fender vent ports. Escalade also has bold, tri-element High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and LED taillamps. These traits contribute to a tailored and capable presence that is augmented by a wider track and standard 18-inch wheels. (Segment-largest 22-inch factory-installed wheels are available.) Escalade has a broad-shouldered, tailored appearance. The wheels are pushed to the corners, with the body-to-tire distance carefully tuned for optimized appearance and performance.

Escalade’s design also is cleaner and more refined. New, wraparound front and rear fascias provide a tighter, almost seamless look. The overall effect is a leaner profile that suggests a trimmer vehicle, despite an approximately 3-inch (76.2 mm) increase in overall length. A more steeply raked, 57-degree windshield contributes to a segment-best 0.363 coefficient of drag, proving that Escalade not only looks sleeker, it is sleeker. The more aerodynamic profile helps improve fuel economy and reduce wind noise, as do narrowed gaps between panels and tighter, flusher mounting of the exterior components, such as the grille, headlamps and trim.

Numerous standard and available features complement Escalade’s new design, including new-design flat-blade windshield wipers and styled wiper arms (RainSense automatic windshield wipers and heated windshield washer fluid are standard), standard front tow hooks, an available power-assisted rear liftgate, in-glass AM/FM radio antenna, available factory-installed articulating running boards (available mid-year) and a larger available sunroof.

Escalade is available in seven exterior colors: Blue Chip, Gold Mist, Black Raven, Quicksilver, Radiant Bronze, Red E and White Diamond.

Design details

A proudly sized wreath-and-crest emblem is at the center of Escalade’s signature egg crate grille. The grille surface is predominantly chrome, with painted elements that add texture and visual depth. It is inset with compartmentalized groups of jewel-like vents and a detailed chrome-trim liner that has a textured screen with bright edges and black sides. The overall look is more detailed, enhancing Escalade’s luxury aura.

Escalade’s new, larger tri-element HID headlamps further the vertical-design theme established by the previous-generation models, but are more prominent and feature three distinct elements; IntelliBeam automatic low/high beam control is available. The headlamps’ interior parabolas are highly reflective and contribute to the jeweled look when viewed through the crystal-clear lenses. The Cadillac logo is etched into the bulb shields, which contain new HID lighting elements.

Escalade’s distinct exterior form includes doors that are not shared with any other GM full-size SUV and front fenders with new vent port design cues inspired by the Sixteen concept vehicle. The vents, located at the top-rear corner of the fenders, deliver a detailed appearance, with three sections set off by a chrome top bar and chrome surround trim. The vents add visual distinction to the Escalade lineup and are sure to become signature hallmarks, like the vertical headlamps and prominent wreath-and-crest grille emblem.

New wraparound front and rear fascias create a seamless appearance that flows into Escalade’s fenders and doors. The lower portion of the front fascia incorporates recessed, integrated tow hooks, owing to the Escalade’s primary mission as a capable full-size SUV. In true Escalade fashion, the tow hook openings make a stylish design statement.

As with the front end, Escalade has a new, wraparound rear fascia that blends seamlessly into the vehicle’s profile. The license plate holder is integrated into the liftgate and a prominent wreath-and-crest emblem is mounted above it. The fascia also incorporates sensors for the standard Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist feature, as well as the standard trailer hitch platform. The platform is covered to maintain Escalade’s tailored appearance, but is easily removable.

Escalade’s vertical lighting theme also is carried to the rear of the vehicle, with two arrays of elegant LED-lit taillamps. The lamps feature indirect optics and numerous sources of illumination per unit, which provides a broader, more even lighting display and eliminates the “pinpoints of light” normally associated with LEDs.

As part of its bold, powerful appearance, Escalade offers optional 22-inch wheels and tires – the largest factory-installed wheels in the full-size segment. All Escalade models – including those equipped with the standard 18-inch wheels and tires – feature a unique seven-spoke wheel design.

Stylish craftsmanship

Escalade’s one-piece, body-color front fascia wraps around into the front wheel openings, creating an integrated, more refined appearance. The fascia covers the front bumper beam, eliminating the conventional look of a bumper separated from other body components. This more seamless design is one of the many details that helps improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. Hood-to-fender gaps are reduced, as are the headlamp-to-fender gaps.

At the rear of the vehicle, gaps are reduced around the liftgate and fascia top, creating a refined and precise appearance. The liftgate-to-quarter panel and liftgate-to-taillamp tolerances have also been reduced with a new, one-piece door ring, or “D-ring.” The D-ring provides an extremely strong, dimensionally accurate foundation for details like the taillamp mounting holes. The quarter panels, underbody and roof all are welded to the D-ring in the upper body structure, which enables the precise fit and enhances the tight structure of the vehicles.

From the side, all models have a more integrated appearance, with t he increased windshield angle helping to create a smoother transition to the roofline. The streamlined look is accented with smoother, lower-profile roof racks. Doors extend down and wrap over the rockers for a cleaner, “one-piece” appearance and improved bodyside integration. The rearview mirrors are styled for improved aerodynamics and reduced wind noise. New, refined grab-style door handles are designed to stand off from the edge of the vehicle for easier actuation. The door handles have a chrome appearance. Door closing is effortless and quiet, sealing with a reassuring sound that conveys Escalade’s solidity and craftsmanship.

Standard running boards are integrated with the exterior design themes, and optional power articulating running boards (available later in the model year) automatically extend when the doors are opened. When not in use, the boards retract inward, giving the vehicle a sleeker, more refined appearance.

Aerodynamic enablers

Improved aerodynamics complement Escalade’s refined exterior elements and help enhance driving quietness. Contributors to the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency include:

* Front air dam – Stylish and carefully integrated to wrap into the leading edge of the tires. Compared to previous models, it is lower and wider.
* Tighter tolerances – New fascia designs, headlamp and grille mounting, and trim mounting attention to detail improve or eliminate gaps and improve tolerances compared to previous models, reducing drag.
* Improved sealing – Airflow into the grille is more efficient with improved front-end sealing, which almost eliminates air leak paths that can create drag.
* Streamlined components – Exterior components such as the rearview mirrors, running boards and roof rack are aerodynamically tuned for reduced drag and noise. The high-mounted stop lamp (also known as the CHMSL) also is aerodynamically tuned, located in a housing that extends nearly the entire width of the roof – Escalade’s unique LED-lit CHMSL is the most aerodynamic among all of GM’s full-size SUVs.

Numerous body sealing features also are designed to reduce wind noise – including newly designed door-to-body seals. The primary door seal has a sculpted shape with multiple internal chambers in the material that condense to provide a tighter fit when the door is closed. An auxiliary door seal, which runs from the lower A-pillar to the top of the door frame and around the second-row door opening, has a combination of soft and stiff rubber material to prevent movement during driving. This helps maintain a constant seal, virtually eliminating the sound of wind noise as the vehicle speed increases.

Interior

The 2007 Cadillac Escalade has an all-new interior that is more spacious, refined, quiet and detailed, elevating its already enviable position at the top of the luxury SUV segment.

Escalade’s interior is upscale and harmonious, with a standard two-tone color scheme offered in a variety of rich, warm colors and accented with sumptuous wood trim. The upscale styling is complemented by new, softer and low-gloss materials for the instrument panel and other trim pieces. The color and grain of the materials were carefully selected for a premium, harmonious feel. Upscale details also include continuously lit LED backlighting for the instruments and chrome accents for the instruments, trim plates and vents.

An airy, more sedan-like environment is created by a lower, farther forward-positioned instrument panel – which also improves outward visibility – and the new, two-tone interior trim treatment. Also, there are almost no exposed metal hardware components or latches, as all models feature enclosing “close-outs” around the seat bottoms and door sill trim plates.

Class-leading comfort

Escalade comes standard with Nuance leather-covered seating for all seating rows. A new, European-style low-profile front-row seat design, with firmer foam cushioning and more aggressive bolsters, enhances comfort. Door pillar-mounted first- and second-row three-point safety belts facilitate the slimmer designs (second-row, center position uses an SUV-typical belt-to-seat design) and ease entry/egress.

Escalade also offers standard heated first- and second-row seats, as well as available cooled front seats that feature perforated leather designed to enhance airflow. The front seats with cooling feature are part of the available Climate Package that also includes a heated steering wheel feature and remote vehicle starting. Escalade comes standard with a leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant steering wheel-mounted audio controls, as well as an auxiliary control for the heated steering wheel (when equipped). The steering wheel has an upscale appearance a features a prominent wreath-and-crest insignia.

The front-row seats have one-inch more fore/aft travel. Second-row seats provide 0.4-inch (10 mm) more leg and knee room. Their seatback angle is adjusted an additional two degrees rearward for extra comfort. A more comfortable driving position is enabled by the standard adjustable pedals. First- and second-row outboard seats offer increased shoulder room – a packaging feat achieved while also accommodating the standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bag system.

The industry-exclusive power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seat allows easy access to the third-row seat. With the push of an overhead console button or a rear-door pillar button, the seat unlatches, sending it into its folded and tumbled position. The third-row seats also have more headroom than previous models and offer improved outward visibility.

Ergonomic controls

The standard six-gauge analog cluster provides easy-to-read displays for fuel, temp, oil, volt/battery, odometer and speedometer. A new, dual-row Driver Information Center display has expanded alerts. All controls are ergonomically placed within easy driver reach. Autotrac transfer case, light switch and radio and HVAC controls have a rotary design for a harmonious look and feel. The center stack provides all-new audio and HVAC controls, including one-touch button control of rear-occupant temperature settings.

Eleven steering wheel-mounted controls contribute to hands-on-the-wheel, eyes-on-the-road driving safety. An additional control switch activates the heated steering wheel feature (when equipped). An overhead console conveniently locates switch controls for the optional sunroof, power liftgate, second-row remote seat release feature and the universal garage door opener.

Tri-zone climate control system

Tri-zone automatic climate control is standard. It offers simplified rear A/C settings and provides quieter operation, more effective cooling/air distribution for rear passengers and improved side-window defogging/defrosting. The system allows up to a 30-degree F difference between driver and front passenger settings, along with a separate setting for rear passengers. The HVAC control module controls the electric rear window defogger and Automatic Climate Preconditioning (provided with the new remote vehicle starting system). The automatic system provides six speed settings in manual mode, plus seemingly unlimited automatic mode adjustments.

New family of radios

Escalade introduces a new family of premium radios and sound systems, including premium Bose sound. All radios are compatible with the standard Generation 6 OnStar system and capable of XM Satellite Radio reception. All units provide a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices, such as an iPod or remote cassette player. The input allows for plug-and-play through the sound system.

The standard system is AM/FM radio with six-disc in-dash CD changer, MP3 and DVD capability, along with a Bose premium, 10-speaker Digital Surround Sound system. A navigation radio with touch-screen controls is available. The navigation radio includes a 6.5-inch LCD screen, integral DVD slot for the map disc and a separate CD slot for music – a separate navigation radio is required with the Rear Seat Entertainment option. The navigation system instantly maps routes with two-dimension or three-dimension full-color map views. The system supports an off-road mode for uncharted roads and provides a low fuel pop-up, which automatically begins to map out the nearest gas station(s) when the vehicle’s low-fuel warning indicator comes on. The navigation screen also doubles as the monitor for the available rear camera system.

Rear seat audio is standard and provides new features for more flexible entertainment, including allowing second-row passengers to plug in headphones, adjust audio volume and listen to a variation of the same type of audio source as the front-seat occupant or an entirely separate source. The system interfaces with the available Rear Entertainment System (RSE). The RSE system provides one remote and two infrared headphones.

Enhanced rear-seat entertainment system

The available DVD-based Rear Seat Entertainment system provides a flip-down, color screen for second- and third-row passenger viewing. The system includes an 8.0-inch Wide-Screen LCD with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio/screen format. To provide more parental control and ease of use, DVD discs are loaded into the Dual Play radio located in the instrument panel. This eliminates the need to reach behind the front seat to load or remove a DVD.

The infotainment system supports the DVD system so audio can be heard throughout the entire speaker system, through wireless headphones or through rear speakers only. All RSE controls, except a parental override control, are in the rear to prevent driver distraction. The parental override control can mute speakers or stop all audio/visual activity.

New, spacious console and glove box

In the front seat area, the new center console offers the segment’s largest storage bin, at more than 20 liters (0.7 cu. ft.). Escalade features a dual-opening console lid, with a soft, leather-like cover. A wood trim appliqué adds distinction and matches the Northern engraving wood trim found elsewhere in the interior. The wood trim runs through the center of the console, providing a sense of compartmentalization.

The Escalade’s console opens with a chrome, spring-damped release button that fosters the vehicle’s refined nature. Multilevel storage within the console includes a smaller, contained space for delicate items like sunglasses. Releasing the second lid opens up the console’s large storage compartment. Additional premium features include separate front compartments, including one with a 12-volt power source. At the rear of the Escalade’s console are two, chrome-ringed cup holders for second-row passengers.

Also, Escalade’s glove box provides 25 percent more storage capacity than before – 5 liters of volume in total.

Increased cargo capacity

Escalade offers 4.2 cubic feet (118.9 liters) of increased cargo room behind the second-row seats and 2.3 cubic feet (65.1 liters) more behind the third row. This gives the vehicles a cargo capacity of 108.9 cubic feet (3,084 liters), when the second-row seat is folded and tumbled forward and the third-row seat is removed. There also is 60.3 cubic feet (1,707.7 liters) of cargo space with the second-row seat in place and the third-row seats removed. There is 16.9 cubic feet (478.6 liters) of cargo space behind the third-row seats.

The significant increase in cargo capacity is achieved despite vehicle length growing by only about 3 inches (76.2 mm). Engineers created the additional room by streamlining the cargo area with relocated and flush-mounted air conditioning ducts and slimmer liftgate trim.

Power fold-and-tumble second-row seat

An industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat is available and allows for easier third-row entry and egress. The feature remotely unlatches the seat to send it into its forward-folded and tumbled position. This greatly eases access to the third seating row, while also easing the burden of parent holding a child – there is no need to fumble with both hands to release and fold the seat forward.

The power fold-and-tumble feature operates with the press of a button from the first-row overhead console or door pillar. The button activates a release mechanism on the seat latch, allowing the seat to fold forward into the tumbled position. (The seat must be returned to the original seating position by hand.)

Larger sunroof

Escalade offers a new, larger (36.1 inches wide by 24.6 inches long) power sliding sunroof. The new sunroof is wider than previous models. It has new express open/close and auto close features, as well as a hard composite wind deflector that reduces wind noise and interior buffeting.

Performance

Under the hood and on the road, the 2007 Cadillac Escalade delivers refinement and outstanding performance from an integrated combination of new powertrain, chassis and suspension systems. The powertrain is more powerful and incorporates new technology to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, while delivering 403 horsepower (301 kw).*

Escalade’s new chassis is stiffer and more robust than the model it replaces, which contributes to a heightened feel of solidity, smoothness and craftsmanship. Moreover, a new rack-and-pinion steering system and coil-over-shock suspension design enable a lively and responsive driving experience – a combination that contributes to a “drive smaller, live bigger” ethic. The more robust chassis allowed engineers to tune the suspension to deliver a ride that feels as good as the standard 18-inch wheels and available, segment-largest 22-inch chromed wheels look.

All-aluminum 6.2L V-8 engine

The ’07 Escalade is powered by a new, 6.2L all-aluminum small-block V-8 with variable valve timing technology (VVT). VVT optimizes camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The 6.2L engine is rated at 403 horsepower (301 kw)* at 5700 rpm and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)* at 4400 rpm; it is teamed with a new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down).

Escalade’s new engine represents the fourth generation of the small-block V-8 design that went into production in 1955, but has its roots in a Cadillac-developed valve-in-head V-8 introduced in 1949 – an engine that, when introduced, was lighter and more powerful than the one it replaced and established the blueprint for modern V-8 and V-6 engines for decades to come. The 2007 Gen IV V-8 engine represents the next step in technology, performance and efficiency. Highlights include:

* Aluminum heads
* Aluminum block
* Variable valve timing (VVT)
* Revised cylinder block design
* Electronic throttle control
* 58X ignition system
* New, more powerful E38 32-bit controller
* Enhanced quietness and smoothness
* Returnless fuel system

Gen IV Vortec engines are designed to provide improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, compared to previous-generation small-block V-8s. Compared to truck engines of a decade ago, the Gen IV Vortec engine family is approximately 90 percent cleaner. Cast iron exhaust manifolds matched with dual close-coupled catalytic converters help reduce cold-start emissions, the largest source of vehicle emissions.

Escalade’s 6.2L engine features a new aluminum block and cylinder heads. The use of an aluminum cylinder block offers reduced mass, an attribute that supports improved vehicle weight distribution and slightly improved fuel economy. The block is virtually identical to iron versions of the small-block family, including a deep skirt design that incorporates cross-bolted main bearing caps and a structural oil pan. It also features crankcase “windows” – vents that help improve bay-to-bay breathing – which reduce pumping losses and support the high horsepower output of the high-performance engine.

Variable valve timing (VVT) helps optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique dual-equal cam phaser is the industry’s first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead valve engine. The unique dual-equal phaser adjusts the camshaft timing at the same rate for both the intake and exhaust valves.

New aluminum cylinder heads also contribute to Escalade’s enhanced power output. The heads are based on the racing-derived cylinder heads of the Corvette Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine, including a unique inlet port shape and offset rocker arm design. Airflow of the heads is supported by large, 55-mm-diameter intake valves and 40.4-mm-diameter exhaust valves.

Escalade’s 6.2L engine is engineered for smoothness and quietness, which contributes to the vehicle’s refinement. Engine quieting features include:

* Special friction-reducing coating on piston skirts
* Full floating piston pins
* Damping patch on the oil pan
* Timing chain tensioner
* Quieter alternator
* Acoustically tuned engine cover

Stronger engine cradles and mounting systems help reduce vibrations transmitted through the chassis that would otherwise be felt by passengers.

New 6L80 six-speed automatic

GM’s new, Hydra-Matic 6L80 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (tap up/tap down) is matched with the Escalade’s 6.2L engine. As one of the industry’s most advanced automatic transmissions, the 6L80’s wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – allows for shorter steps between gears. This enables a steep, 4.02:1 first gear, which provides a very strong launch feel. The two overdrive gears include a 0.85:1 ratio in fifth gear and a 0.67:1 ratio in sixth. With two overdrive gears, engine rpm is reduced by approximately 9 percent at 60 mph, to approximately 1500 rpm. Lower engine rpm can bolster fuel economy because less fuel is used. A lower-rpm cruising speed also enhances smoothness and reduces noise heard in the vehicle’s cabin.

Further technical sophistication is exemplified by clutch-to-clutch operation that reduces complexity and packaging. It also enhances the performance feel of the transmission, as shifts feel more immediate and precise. Clutch-to-clutch operation is achieved with three planetary gears, two stationary clutches and three rotating clutches. It is a simple, less complex design that enables the six-speed transmission to be packaged in a size not much larger than a four-speed automatic. Only the first-to-second upshift is a freewheeling action, where the second gear clutch engages while the first gear one-way clutch spins freely. This allows a greater degree of smoothness at lower vehicle speeds.

A new, 32-bit electro-hydraulic control module optimizes transmission performance according to a variety of vehicle inputs, while also enabling features including tow/haul mode, auto grade braking and tap-shift manual range selection. The controller is located entirely within the transmission, which shields the controller from outside elements.

Tow/haul mode is a driver-selectable feature that provides optimal shift characteristics specific for towing or hauling a heavy load. The feature is complemented by manual range selection, which allows the driver to block out upper gears and select desired gears for unique driving conditions, such as towing on a steep grade. The manual range selection feature increases the feeling of control by holding the gear pre-selected by the driver. Electronic safeguards prevent the transmission from being shifted in a manner that could cause engine damage or loss of vehicle control. Auto grade braking is available when the tow/haul mode is selected and the transmission is not in the range selection mode.

Robust chassis system

Escalade’s chassis and suspension systems have been redesigned and serve as the foundation for the vehicle’s refined ride and handling characteristics. It rides on a 116-inch (2946 mm) wheelbase and features a fully boxed perimeter-type frame, which provides an extremely solid foundation that contributes to sedan-like smoothness.

The hydroformed frame has three distinct sections, or “bays,” with specific strength and support characteristics. These bays allowed engineers to maximize each section without compromising other areas. Chassis stiffness is greatly enhanced throughout the frame, as well as providing enhanced performance during a crash. Torsional stiffness (front-to-back) was increased 49 percent and beaming frequency was increased 35 percent compared with the previous model.

The 2007 Escalade also has wider front and rear tracks. The front track is 68.2 inches (1731.8 mm) vs. 65 inches (1651 mm). The rear track is 67 inches (1701.8 mm) vs. 65.98 inches (1675.8 mm). The wider track enhances smoothness and promotes overall vehicle stability, which the driver and passenger can feel through more solid, composed and linear ride and handling characteristics, as well as flatter, more controlled cornering.

New coil-over-shock front suspension

A new coil-over-shock front suspension is used on all models. The coil-over-shock configuration offers smoother, more precise handling characteristics and reduces vibration and harshness, especially with Escalade’s larger wheel-and-tire combinations. An enhanced five-link rear suspension is used on all models. It features a more robust rear axle design that offers increased payload capacity. Both the front and rear suspensions use new, stiffer frame mounts and variable-rate springs.

Escalade’s electronically controlled Road Sensing System suspension is standard. It is a real-time damping system that provides an extremely refined ride with greatly reduced body motion. The system consists of a semi-active, two-position damping control system that responds in real time to road and driving conditions, based on body and wheel motion sensors. There are also steering, engine torque, brake and speed sensors. Each corner features independent damping control. The suspension is an air-lift/auto-leveling system that includes air bags located in the shocks. An integrated air pump automatically adds air to raise and level the vehicle’s ride height when carrying passengers or a heavy payload. Conversely, air is bled from the shocks when the payload is removed, returning the vehicle to a level ride height.

New rack-and-pinion steering system

A new hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system provides precise steering response with optimized on-center steering feel. Steering ratios have been optimized for easy maneuverability in tight parking situations. Noise and vibration have been substantially reduced.

Enhanced four-wheel disc brake system

A larger-capacity, four-wheel disc brake system with a new tie rod-type application and new four-channel ABS system are designed to provide Escalade with superior stopping capability and the segment’s best braking feel. ABS is standard on all models, along with an all-speed traction control system.

New and improved elements of the brake system include larger-diameter front and rear disc rotors and new, stiffer brake calipers. The front rotors measure 13 inches in diameter (330.2 mm), an increase of 1 inch (25.4 mm) – approximately 15 percent larger than the previous-generation design. The front rotors are also thicker with large cooling vents, providing enhanced performance and durability. The cast iron, dual-piston front brake calipers are 50 percent stiffer than before, which reduces the tendency for flexing during hard or prolonged braking. The stiffer calipers, along with dual pistons, contribute to a more direct and stronger brake pedal feel.

Rear brakes feature standard vented discs that measure 13.5 inches (342.9 mm), an increase of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) – approximately 7.5 percent – over the previous-generation system. Both the front and rear brakes use new, non-asbestos brake pad linings that can deliver up to 40,000 miles of performance during normal use.

A next-generation Bosch 8.0 ABS system is standard. It has more precise valve control that requires less cycling of fluid from the brake master cylinder, resulting in reduced noise and enhanced braking feel when ABS is activated during a braking event. The new ABS system also is less complex and has reduced mass when compared with the previous system.

Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control with new rollover mitigation

GM’s sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard. Partnered with the new brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability. The StabiliTrak system in the ’07 Escalade has added software algorithms for rollover mitigation. The software algorithms use StabiliTrak sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip up” on a flat road surface, and apply brake force to the outside front and rear wheels in order to reduce lateral force in the vehicle. This brake force intervention can help reduce the likelihood of a rollover in certain circumstances – including “fish hook” maneuvers that involve sudden and rapid back-and-forth steering.

StabiliTrak uses brake control to precisely control the speed of each wheel and manage torque across the front and rear axles. When the vehicle is on a slippery surface, the traction system increases torque to the rear wheel that has the most traction.

The vehicle brake system provides the torque-biasing to enhance traction, and engine management is used, as required, to assist in controlling traction and yaw stability.

Larger wheels and tires

Escalade comes with 18-inch standard wheels and tires; 18-inch chrome wheels and segment-largest 22-inch chromed wheels are available. Some wheel-and-tire combinations are equipped with new P-metric tires that have a nylon cap ply that enhances strength and durability. All wheels have a distinctive, Cadillac-specific seven-spoke design. Edited by CSpec

Technology

Cadillac’s heritage of technological innovation expands with the 2007 Escalade. From safety features such as new standard roof-mounted head curtain side air bags to StabiliTrak stability control with new rollover mitigation, Escalade delivers purposeful technologies to ensure exceptional levels of safety, convenience and luxury.

“These vehicles envelop occupants with a comprehensive safety technology system that is built from a foundation of segment leadership in safety technology,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager.

Cadillac Escalade has a heritage of safety innovation. Previous-generation vehicles were the first in the industry to offer a passenger sensing system to suppress deployment of the front passenger air bag if a child or person of smaller stature is detected. Cadillac Escalade also was first to offer dual-stage air bags, standard four-wheel antilock brakes and a standard electronic stability control system.

In the new Escalade, comprehensive safety encompasses crash avoidance, occupant protection and post-crash care. The safety portfolio features three linked avenues of protection: vehicle structure and dynamics; occupant safety features and driver control features.

It starts with a stronger frame and body structure. Crash avoidance, for example, is bolstered through enhanced design and driver control dynamics such as wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions – including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and new rack-and-pinion steering. StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation is standard on all models.

Safety highlights of Cadillac’s 2007 Escalade are:

Vehicle structural and safety dynamics

The 2007 Escalade is built on a stronger and stiffer, fully-boxed frame that is designed for improved crash-energy management. The front frame section, for example, has improved crush dynamics that provide the equivalent of 17.7 inches (450 mm) of additional crush space in vehicles that are only approximately 3 inches (76.2 mm) longer than their predecessors. The frame also is designed for improved vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility.

The all-new, fully-boxed frame features hydroformed front and rear sections, as well as strategic placement of high-strength materials. The frame also features more reinforcing cross members than the previous-generation models, as well as stronger mounting brackets in key areas. The hydroformed front section frame rails have a wall thickness of approximately 3.2 mm and are straighter with a more consistent cross-section than the previous-generation frame – a design that delivers improved axial crush performance. Also, the new frame is 49 percent stiffer than the predecessor, which helps resist bending or twisting during a crash.

The front rails of the frame are designed with enhanced vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility with smaller or lower vehicles during a crash. Compatibility brackets located on the forward position of the lower front frame rails are designed to buckle in a frontal or offset collision, reducing the motion of the frame into the smaller vehicle. The location of the brackets meets all car structure heights.

Along with the frame, the upper body structure is designed to manage the energy of a crash, including improved side-impact and rollover performance. Strategic placement of high-strength steel throughout the frame and body structure provides additional support and helps maintain passenger compartment integrity during a crash.

The 2007 Escalade body structure enhancements also include:

* A new A-pillar reinforcement made of high-strength steel that resists buckling
* High-strength steel roof-rail reinforcements on both sides of the B-pillar where they meet the roof rails contribute to improved rollover performance
* A diagonal brace made of high-strength steel located beneath the driver and front passenger “toe” pan provides reinforcing strength for the vehicle and lower torso protection for passengers
* An all-new, single-piece rear D-ring offers increased dimensional accuracy and reinforcing structure
* An enhanced front door hinge box adds strength to the forward section of the front door D-ring, which helps reduce deformation during a crash
* Stronger knee bolster brackets (welded to the instrument panel cross beam) are designed to withstand higher loads during frontal impacts
* A new “Z” bracket adds strength to the area where the front-of-dash section of the body structure meets the floor pan, as does structural adhesive applied to the same area

The strength of the frame and body structure, extensive math modeling and internal crash tests contribute to Cadillac’s expectation that the new Escalade will be among the segment’s top performers in frontal barrier and frontal offset crash tests.

Other features that contribute to Escalade’s strong performance during a crash include:

* Impact beams – Front and rear impact beams are designed to absorb low-speed crashes and minimize vehicle damage. A more severe crash will cause the energy-absorbing bumper beam to crush. There also are two side-impact beams in each door.
* Passenger head protection – Energy-absorbing foam padding and trim on the A-, B- and C-pillars, as well as the roof rail, are designed to spread the energy of a crash by crumpling and crushing on impact. The headliner also contains energy-absorbing material.
* Seat safeguards – High-strength front seatbacks provide restraint during a rear-end crash. There also is a crushable pan between the seat frame and seat cushion – the pan will crush to absorb energy in the case of a high load.

Occupant safety and security

Air bags: Dual-stage driver and outboard front passenger air bags are standard on all Escalades. Children and smaller-stature front passengers are protected with GM’s passenger sensing system. Roof-mounted head curtain side air bags are standard on all models. These air bags inflate to restrain outboard passengers in all seating rows and are equipped with special tethers that hold the bags in place for several seconds for increased rollover protection and passenger containment.

The air bag system’s sensors determine the severity of a crash, indicating whether the primary stage of inflation or the primary and secondary stages are required for maximum protection. The sensors are located at the front of the vehicle, on the radiator support beam.

In the event of a side-impact collision, the head curtain side air bags act like a protective curtain, unfolding from the roof rail between the A- and D-pillars in three-seating-row vehicles and A- to C-pillars in two-row configurations. The first- and second-row positions are restrained by a larger side air bag and the third row has a dedicated air bag. Each side air bag has its own dedicated inflator for optimized fill rates into each curtain.

The roof-mounted head curtain side air bag system incorporates one of the segment’s first rollover indication sensors, which is located in the vehicle’s center tunnel. The sensor monitors the vehicle’s angle variance from level. If the angle indicates an impending rollover, the side air bags will deploy to provide an extra measure of occupant protection and containment. In this instance, the side air bags stay inflated longer than during a side-impact collision, because rollover incidents may last longer and the inflated air bags help keep occupants inside the vehicle.

Occupant protection from secondary impacts also is a feature of the roof-mounted head curtain side air bags. Based on the severity of the event, the bags’ “curtains” are deployed whenever the second stage inflation of the frontal air bags is triggered. GM’s safety engineers reasoned that a collision severe enough to trigger both stages of frontal air bag inflation is likely to cause a secondary collision. In this instance, the air bags deploy and remain inflated for several seconds following the initial collision, ready for a possible second impact.

Front safety belt pretensioners and rear safety belt features: Front safety belt pretensioners are standard on all models. In the event of a crash, they take up slack in the safety belt webbing to help secure the passenger in the seat and prevent him or her from “submarining” during the crash. It also helps to hold the passenger in position, so deceleration is at the same, slower rate of the vehicle and not a more abrupt stop.

The pretensioners are activated by a sensor, which triggers a pyrotechnic device that almost instantly reduces slack in the belt webbing. The safety belts are equipped with low-friction D-rings and low-effort retractors, so there is minimum pressure on the occupant, making the belts more comfortable to wear. Also, the pretensioners will activate in a rear-end crash – an industry first in Cadillac Escalade.

Second- and third-row seats have three-point safety belts in all positions. An added feature is an available comfort guide on the outboard seatbelts. This device has an elastic cord that helps to properly position the shoulder belt on smaller-stature occupants. The second- and third-row seats also come equipped with LATCH system child seat anchors, for both top tethers and lower latches, to simplify installation of child seats. These anchors, which are secured to the body structure, are provided in the rear outboard seating positions.

Sophisticated sensors: Escalade is equipped with the segment’s most comprehensive system of crash impact sensors, which work together to provide 360 degrees of sensing tied to the central Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM). This provides faster, more immediate data that is used to activate the vehicle’s numerous air bag safety features. The sensors include:

* Two forward sensors located on the frame’s most forward cross member measure deceleration crush, enabling SDM decisions in less than 10 milliseconds
* Four side-impact sensors – one on each side-door beam – provide more rearward sensing of side impacts than previous models
* A rollover sensor that continually measures the vehicle’s pitch angle and signals the SDM if the angle indicates an imminent rollover
* Rear sensors that detect rear-end impacts and trigger the safety belt pretensioners

Driver control: While designed to help protect passengers in the event of a crash, the new Cadillac Escalade also has features designed to avoid or reduce the chance of a crash. This starts with a wider front and rear track, which helps provide a more secure driving feel and a lower center of gravity. Also, the improved responsiveness while driving – delivered by the new coil-over-shock front suspension, enhanced five-link rear suspension and new rack-and-pinion steering system – provides the driver with a heightened feeling of control.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control: GM’s sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system is standard on all Escalade models. Partnered with the new brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability.

The StabiliTrak system has new rollover mitigation technology. Rollover mitigation adds software algorithms that use StabiliTrak sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip up” on a flat road surface, and applies brake force to the outside front and rear wheels in order to reduce lateral force in the vehicle. This brake force intervention can help reduce the likelihood of a rollover in certain circumstances – including “fish hook” maneuvers that involve sudden and rapid back-and-forth steering.

StabiliTrak uses brake control to precisely manage the speed of each wheel as well as torque across the front and rear axles. Individual brake sensors at each wheel provide signals to the control module, enabling it to aggressively adjust brake pressure. The vehicle brake system provides torque-biasing to enhance traction and engine management as required to assist in controlling traction and yaw stability. The transfer case’s control algorithm has been integrated with the StabiliTrak and ABS systems to provide enhanced vehicle stability by managing the front-to-rear torque distribution.

StabiliTrak is always on and fully functional. It is automatically enabled, providing full stability, traction and ABS control, whenever the vehicle operates in forward gears. The system intervenes when it senses one or more of the wheels slipping or when the vehicle is not following the driver’s intended path. It detects slippage during braking or acceleration and automatically adjusts individual wheel brake pressure, engine torque and adjusts front to rear drive torque distribution, as required, to achieve optimal control.

New four-wheel disc brake system: A larger-capacity, four-wheel disc brake system with a new, four-channel ABS is designed to provide the new Escalade with superior stopping capability and the segment’s best braking feel. ABS is standard on all models, along with a full-function traction control system. The headlining elements of the new brake system include larger-diameter front and rear disc rotors and new, stiffer brake calipers.

The front rotors measure 13 inches in diameter (330.2 mm), an increase of 1 inch (25.4 mm), or 15 percent larger. The front rotors also are thicker, with large cooling vents, providing enhanced performance and durability. The cast iron, dual-piston front brake calipers are 50 percent stiffer than before, which reduces the tendency for flexing during hard or prolonged braking. The stiffer calipers, along with dual pistons, contribute to a more direct and stronger brake pedal feel.

Rear brakes feature standard vented discs that measure 13.5 inches (342.9 mm), an increase of 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) – approximately 7.5 percent larger. A revised single-piston rear brake caliper design contributes to reduced brake noise and more immediate braking response. Both the front and rear brakes use new, non-asbestos brake pad linings that can deliver up to 40,000 miles of performance during normal use.

The new brakes are complemented by a more robust, twin-piston brake application system, including a larger master cylinder and active brake booster. Engineers tuned the application system to optimize the pedal feel and brake system responsiveness. It requires less pedal pressure to provide a more immediate brake response, delivering a dramatically improved feel.

A next-generation Bosch 8.0 ABS system is standard on all 2007 Escalades. It has more precise valve control that requires less cycling of fluid from the brake master cylinder, resulting in reduced noise and enhanced braking feel when ABS is activated during braking. The new ABS system also is less complex and has reduced mass when compared with the previous system.

Full-function traction control uses the ABS system to regulate brake pressure to help provide enhanced traction for 2WD vehicles.

Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist: The new standard Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist system provides audible warnings of certain stationary objects behind the vehicle. The system operates when the vehicle is in Reverse, using four sensors located at the rear of the vehicle. The new system is available in conjunction with a new, optional rearview camera system, the first offered in Escalade.

Rearview camera system: The available rearview camera system can be ordered with the optional navigation radio system. The camera provides a view of the rear of the vehicle not easily seen, even with the outside or inside rearview mirrors, allowing the driver to view persons or obstacles directly in the path of the vehicle. It also assists with parallel parking or trailer backing. Drivers should still inspect around their vehicles for objects or people in the rearward path of their vehicle.

A large, clear picture of the camera’s field of view is available on the navigation radio screen. The rearview camera also works with the Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist to provide an audible proximity reference to items in the camera’s view. If a rear parking assist sensor detects a stationary object, it alerts the camera.

The camera functions only when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse. For convenience, it will stay on for a calibrated length of time – determined partly by vehicle speed – after the vehicle is shifted into Drive. The camera is mounted in the license plate surround bracket for an integrated styling appearance. It provides approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) of viewing distance behind the vehicle.

OnStar Generation 6: All Escalades come standard with the OnStar Generation 6 system, including a one-year subscription to the Directions and Connections plan. The OnStar service includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants and summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen and provides remote door-unlocking service.

Remote starting system: A factory-installed remote vehicle starting system is standard – a first for Cadillac Escalade – providing customers with the convenience of starting the vehicle during inclement weather or other situations. The system has up to a 200-foot (61 meters) range and offers automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the vehicle prior to entry. On cold mornings, for example, the heat and defroster will be automatically turned on, even if the operator had last used the controls in a vent position.

Tire pressure monitoring system: A revised and easier-to-use tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all Escalades, providing drivers with peace of mind and contributing to a safer driving experience. The system alerts drivers via a signal on the instrument panel Driver Information Center if a tire’s inflation status requires attention. In fact, the system sends a message to the information center each time the vehicle is started as part of a routine operations check. The driver also can use the information center to check the pressure of each tire. The pressure monitor sensors can detect air pressure differences to within one pound of the other tires.

Rain-sensing wipers: Standard on Escalade is a rain-sensing windshield wiper system that automatically activates the wipers when precipitation is detected. An infrared sensor located on the windshield (behind the inside rearview mirror) is used to detect raindrops. If rain or other precipitation is detected, the system signals the wipers to operate and adjusts wiper speed based on the intensity of the precipitation.

Thanks CSpec! The rear 3/4 shot looks great. I love the interior and the side vents. Very well executed. There isn't an SUV out that can compare to the Escalade's new powertrain. As croc stated in another thread, the grille's detail is amazing.

It looks a lot better in the first image than the previous images that were shown last night. The grille detail looks a lot nicer close up than far away. It doesnt look as bad as it did yesterday...when I in blind rage.
Posted
Only "funny" details I don't like are: 1) the little chrome flourishes below the wreath and crest on the grille 2) the location of the reverse lamps. I would have preferred them flanking the license plate bracket like in most Cadillacs.

Looks good... except I wish they would have kept the aggressive creases along the side of the hood and over the wheel wells.

I thought the same the first time I looked at the wreath and crest, but on closer inspection... it's only a reflection (of the chrome surround of the wreath and crest onto that of the grill).

(why are my posts rhiming?)

Thanks for posting CSpec. It looks much better than the spy shots suggested, and the interior is very well done, IMO. It looks even better in the shot on the Cadillac website with the black and different color of wood. I assume the granite replaces the wood if you order it?

I thought the same the first time I looked at the wreath and crest, but on closer inspection... it's only a reflection (of the chrome surround of the wreath and crest onto that of the grill).

(why are my posts rhiming?)

You're a poet and you don't know it!

The more I look at this thing, the more I think it's fantastic. This level of attention to details has not been seen on a GM car since the 50s.

Yup, the gauge cluster looks right out of any Ford sedan. I'll wait to see one in person before I comment on perceived quality. The grille has good detail to it. I'm disappointed that the rear design is similar to the Yukon and Tahoe. Cadillacs should be 100% distinguishable both front and rear. Chief

I love the detailing in the headlight fixtures and grill.  Probably my favorite little details about the exterior.

Agreed. That sixteen minigrilles forming into one big grille just wows me. I do like the headlight details too. GM got this one right; that's for sure!

Damn, I just noticed the entire bottom half of the side-view mirrors are chrome, too!  Nice!

I really like how GM has cleaned up the sides of the new Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade....left off the tacked on fender flares and lower door/rocker panel glop...

Are the integrated turn signals hidden somewhere below the chrome, or is it optional?

I really like those LED tail-lamps, they are gonna look sweet at night!

I was reading the articel and just noticed, They actually etched the wreath and crest into the bulbs (look at the close up shot of the headlight and the middle bulb)...I must admit, the attention to detail on this car is pretty amazing...

Oh, also, along the dash (specifically on the passenger side) what are those matericlas above the wood trim? Is that like some type of aluminum? Or is it just plastic? The material surrounding the vents too. I have a feeling it is just plastic, which is kind of a let down...some brushed aluminum or something like that would look great in place of that...Same goes with the steering wheel...those peices surroiunding the steering wheel controls look like just plastic, and they would look great with aluminum or wood inserts instead...

They're integrated into the mirror like on my Park Avenue. You can see them in this pic:

I thought I remembered seeing turn signals (like in the mirrors of the M class), besides the LED's behind the mirror.

Good question. GM needs to pony for the real stuff already, though seeing from what ah-ha has been saying and spending up close time with the materials, i wonder what they really are made up of.

The grille detail is amazing. I was wondering why everyone on the other thread was complaining about it when it was obvious you could see it in the photos we got last night. The chrome on the mirrors is cool, too. My only question: why do rear seat passengers get treated to buttons with chrome surrounds while the front has only black plastic surrounding them?

I wouldn't be surprised if that's changed for production. GM occasionally leaves out features in press pics only to add them later.

It's awesome all, all the way around. I love the grill, gauges, and interior. I love the 22s and 403HP. The only things I'm iffy on is the thick chrome bar that holds the wreath on the rear hatch, and the chrome strips on the doors. To me, that's just a bit of chrome overkill, but besides that it's perfect.

I am so happy with this car. The more I look at it, the more I can imagine it running about LA, it will be a huge hit, I just hope Caddy dealers stack up on different colors. The black hides the lines of the fantastic grille shape and bumper much more than that silver. The silver Escalade looks super classy. I am so thrilled with this. I'm only slightly unimpressed with the interior design that is well, rather throwaway compared to the design of say, the Land Rover. Even Navigator took more risks with the interior design presence. GM has upped the quality, to a point where it can play in the big leagues and for that I am satisfied. While an edgier interior with more bodaiciousness and risktaking would have appealed more to me, this interior will appeal to many, and all will find it very classy and elegant. Thank GOD! Can't wait to see it in more colors and with the granite trim.

Damn. That is an Escalade.

I'll admit, I came into this with low hopes, but the press pics won me over. The attention to detail is simply spectacular. Just thinking about how great this Caddy is may mean the next generation Cadillacs may just be the Standard of the World again.

This thing is going to make stew of the Lexus GX.

Well, looking at the high-res pics it doesn't look like plastic because it's not grainy like the rest of the plastic. The stuff around the vents might be plastic, but I'm pretty sure the stuff in front of the passenger seat isn't plastic because it doesn't have any grain to it and it also has "Cadillac" etched into it in the lower right hand corner.

why on earth does the speedometer go up to 160mph because im sure that the new one is limited like the current one to 100mph, also what is it with the massively large center storage bucket thing, in all three, tahoe/yukon/escalade, the lid seems oversized, overall its grown on me but it will take some time to get used to the front other than that i think it looks really good

With 403hp i'm sure the escalade could do 120 in a hurry, but the idea is "sporty"

a side by side comparison shows a clearly updated and much improved interior, i don’t quite understand the wood ringed steering wheel idea, it doesn’t look much like a truck anymore Edited by shayes287

Love it. My only quibble: If you're not going to do a consol shifter, make it a pushbutton shift rather then column shift. I think the Escalade class can handle it.

On a related note, did anyone else notice that the gauge indicator has an M setting and the gear lever has buttons on it? What kind of person decides on making a column shift a manumatic?

As a piece of engineering, the new Caddyeskuh-Laid seems brilliant. I may gripe about the lack of interior originality, but plain-old, traditional attention-to-detail is certainly there.

Oh, and, good point about the gauges, Chief. They are very Ford-like. Edited by empowah

A very tasteful design overall. The chrome is perhaps a little too heavy-handed, but there's pretty good restraint otherwise.

It's probably because the seats no longer have their own arm rest, so the center counsel (is that spelled correctly? I doubt it.) has to make up for it by being wider.

<_< Still not a big fan of this new baby, but instide is nice. Keep in mind, Mercedes has a column manumatic shifter. Not all get floor shifters and that huge center floor stack eats up very nice leg room. I for one do not like the floor shifter and the room it takes away from leg comfort. I will take a column shifter any day. :)

Though I understand, to an extent, what you're talking about, I don't understand how the center console can take away that much front leg room. Do you people sit weird or something? Usually your legs go out in front of you, not to the side.

Personally, I like center consoles. They give a comforting, cocooned, cockpit feel to the interior if they're designed right. Plus, it's nice to have something to rest my right knee against.

I like it. We have an 04 Escalade and the new one is a nice upgrade without making the current model seem totally obsolete. I think I like the exterior of the current one a little better but the interior, drive train and features are a big step upwards on the new model. Especially the 403 HP :P .
