That "private brand"....

While saving some money, and trying to prove a point, my buddy is using those "other" brands for his car.

He used to do some of the same things we do here to baby our cars (even his beater, a Cav like my wife's), but says no that now it's time to use some common sense, as most "stuff" out there is all the same.....

I do find it interesting....(and he's not cheaping out on his classic Mustang..)

Things he did this week...

New Goodyear Viva 2s from Walmart

Super Tech Full Syn oil (instead of Mobil 1)

Super Tech Car Wash (instead of Mothers)

It's a little different coming from a fellow car guy....what do you guys think?

If he's not trusting the supertech synthetic oil to last as long as the mobil1, then it should be perfectly fine. I haven't noticed any problems running it in my car, and it should still be better than regular dino oil. The car wash isn't a big deal either, if he's still washing & waxing the car properly & regularly. Expensive soap might help maintain the wax job, but if it doesn't go without a wax job for a really long time, it shouldn't make much of a difference, i wouldn't think. I don't know anything about those tires, though, so I can't comment on that.

The tires are similar to the stock tires on his car now (2004 Cav sedan), Goodyear Conquests. While most car people avoid Walmart (ex oil) stuff, they seem to be holding up well in everyday driving on my co worker's Civic.....

I think he changes his oil around the same time I change the Mobil 1 in her car (3500 miles) since he does a good bit of city driving. From what I've heard, it holds up pretty well...

I'm not really sure about the soap either, never tried that....

Mobil1 full synthetic being changed out at 3500 miles? That's major overkill. I can understand doing it early because of city driving, but to go from their 15k mile oil change claims to 3500 miles?

I think you are thinking of the mobil 1 Extended stuff...that can go 15k...

I'm talking about the normal Mobil 1...that goes 3-7k.........
