That looks great...20 isn't bad for the highway mileage, better than my 6 cyl Jeep.

But that it is a Jeep. Still if it was low 20's like 22 or so I would be more impressed.

Yeah, but I don't have 400 hp. 20mpg with 400+ hp in a 4,000+ lb car is impressive.

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP on Ebay

I really am loving the GXP verison except the fuel economy... So who wants one? Come on Camino I know you still do...

You'd have to renounce trickle down theory for me to even consider the idea of buying it for you. After all, if we all joined in and bought it for you, that'd be socialism. :AH-HA_wink: *

the painted chrome wheels could point to a defecit in understanding the client that goes after these things. pontiac dealers traditionally associate pontiac buyers with flash, thus let's bling up this expensive G8. but this is going after a sophisticated buyer familiar with performance and luxury cars, looking for a great performance ride that doesn't sacrifice sophisticated looks. i don't like the painted chrome wheels here and i suspect many others also prefer the standard style. GM dealer otoh can't think of a better way to please traditional pontiac folks, flashy wheels!

it isn't that i don't sometimes go for the painted chrome look, but the whole inside of the wheel gets lost in the sea of shine.

I like the style of the wheel, but would prefer them in a dark titanium rather than chrome.

Ahhh that is okay the election is over we have one president at a time. I understand this. I hope he has a good term. But uhh I do like this car. The buy it now is to high tho. The wheels are polished I belief could be wrong. The SRT-8 Charger is only rated at 18, I thought it was higher than that, then this isn't so bad. Still I want one. It could get 10 and I would still lust for one trust me.

Well I would never pay that, because after rebates they would be closer to 35ish. Not 4X,XXX anything.

See, that's why GM can't sell cars and make money doing so now... everyone waits for rebates, no matter how awesome the car is...

*observation*

However, I would wait out the dealer markup.

About the car itself...

... if only I had the money...

... and hadn't just bought a car in October...

... and could drive stick... :(

Ahh trust me GM makes enough money on my GM parts I buy and my dealer service. I am always out for a good deal.

Let's see:

Gm loses eleventy billion dollars

Self proclaimed GM fan says he wont pay sticker and will wait for GM to throw cash on the hood

I think there might be a connection.

Except that this dealer is trying for a premium over sticker.

And, paying sticker price, even when there is no cash on the hood is just stupid.

That goes for any car (Saturn excepted)

The thing is, GM needs money and cant get its own diehards to pay $40,000 for a car that can run with a $60,000 BMW.

and the GXP has more HP and torque too....

I'm sure plenty of these 'diehards' want to buy a new G8 GXP for $25k. The 'rebates all the time' Wal-Mart 'low prices everyday' image GM has created sets up unreleastic expectations...

Diehard: singular.

The expectation of rebates is a monster GM itself created, and then perpetuated, by more flip-flop policies on pricing.

It's just another example of lame decision-making and lack of intestinal fortitude in upper management. They can't simply make a plan and stick to it. They are eternally annoucing a product or policy and then abandoning it.

It kills their credibility.

Same dealer appears to have 2 more GXPs, a white manual and black automatic.

Bet they'll have them until GM puts $7500 on the hood to entice their cheap-ass "fans" to put their money where their mouths are. Meanwhile BMW probably gets their customers to fork over close to $60,000 for the 550i which, as Drew pointed out, has less hp and torque.

It's a 2-way street. GM's years of throwing rebates on half-assed cars to get them to sell has conditioned people to expect those rebates even on the good cars, but at the same time many people are cheap asshats.

I think you are wrong about this car, the real "diehards" already have a deal for one. The ones that show-up on ebay are from dealers looking for an extra, fast, buck.

The GXPs will all be spoken for soon enough, the v6 cars are another story entirely.

A big problem though is GM's lack of control over it's dealers. The dealer markup on this car is bad. If GM could just set the price appropriately and keep the dealers from the ADM, there wouldn't be this rebate issue.

I doubt GM has a markup problem with the Aveo (or will with the G3) yet gm4life defended the price of the G3 by saying it will be priced fine after rebates. And I doubt the G6 V6 suffers from markups. Its the fault of the buyers who are painfully cheap.

Yah, I'm sure with dealer markups the G8 GXP will be well north of $50k.

Not cheap.... because they'd go out and spend the same or more for a V6 Accord. Because it's a Pontiac, they want the rebates.

The G8 shouldn't need rebates to sell, doesn't matter if we're talking V6, GT or GXP. People have been clamoring for a modern RWD sedan from Pontiac, then complain when its not priced like a Cobalt. Thats the problem with GM fans, they want all these cars, but are so used to paying half sticker that they put off their purchase.

Posted

If the G8 was at the top of my list I would be willing to pay the actual cost of it, but I do want a Challenger more. I'm becoming iffy about the Camaro since NOS' report on it, although I still want one.

I think outside factors are playing a major role here, wouldn't you agree?

The V6 is of marginal value compared to a GT or GXP: it's price is too close to the GT to make it a good buy.

And you've proven the point that conditioning (done by GM itself) has led to buyer reluctance.

GM brought it on themselves. Years of underwhelming Pontiacs has led to the brand being an afterthought for most buyers. Dropping the V6 might be their best bet.

I think if this were 3 years ago, there would be no problem selling GXPs w/o rebates...Dodge was selling Charger SRT8s pretty easily then. The economic meltdown has everyone cautious now, and many of us that can afford a $40k sports sedan are avoiding buying anything right now...everything is too uncertain right now to commit to a monthly payment. It's just not a prudent time for many to spend money on a new car.

I agree.

However, I don't believe that these factors affect the G8 in anything like the way they affect the G6, for example.

You can look to the gas price scare and the economic malaise for the G8's difficulties.

The V6 is poorly positioned though, thanks to underwhelming fuel economy and the small price difference with the GT.

Does the same fate await Buick's upcoming sedans?

Buick has been getting by with cars that appeal to retirees. If the NG Lacrosse is any indication, they'll start offering cars with a wider appeal, but success depends on new buyers coming over and old buyers being willing to buy without $8,000 on the hood. The G8 hasn't been able to do it, we'll see what happens.
