The Lumina was broken into today while parked in the parking garage near where I work. It happened sometime between 7:30 AM and noon. The asshole punched the driver's side lock in with a tool, unlocked the car, and then ripped my stereo out and left. The dash was damaged slightly and I'm not sure if they will be able to repair the lock on the door since the sheet metal was punched in pretty deep. Luckily nothing else was taken...I had a fold-out chair in the backseat, some CD's under my seat, and a set of golf clubs and a $40 battery charger in my trunk.

The stereo was a $300 Alpine and has almost as much value as my car. I'm pretty bummed right now...luckily my insurance should cover everything. But the thought of someone else breaking into my car and walking away with something I bought with hard earned money really gets my blood boiling.

Sorry to hear that. In addition to aggravating, it's also kind of eerie....that someone has trespassed your space.

Isn't your city one of the second-tier ones in your state? I guess it happens everywhere. When I was in my last year of grad school in Champaign IL, I "splurged" to live in a nice apartment complex with parking under the building and gate access. I get either a knock on the door or something in the mail from the Champaign police department to testify or come to a hearing...great, while in grad school. Turns out this small-time criminal dork was caught going into my Cutlass in the parking garage underneath and taking change from the ashtray. He plead guilty, or was going to plead guilty, so they then told me I didn't have to go.

Hope you are able to get over the negative experience. Ideally, they will catch that mo-fo if he's casing that parking lot...

Yeah, Cedar Rapids really isn't that big...about 250,000 in the metro. But it's sort of a ghetto city compared to Des Moines; grimey and more of a working-class town. It's been in decline for a few decades and while some areas are starting to turn around and look pretty nice, the flood brought a lot of seedy characters out of the woodwork. They've had widespread car break-ins all over town lately. I'd be willing to bet some are flood victims that lost their homes and are turning to "alternate" means to make money.

A co-worker was telling me about a time when he was in high school, he was going to a KISS concert here in CR and some guy broke into his car and a whole string of cars in a row, taking tape deck after tape deck. The guy wasn't exactly bright, was hammered at the time, and moved a little too slowly. Eventually the cops showed up and busted him carry a bag full of stereos.

I'm so sorry to hear Mustang! I hope things get resolved quickly and that you can put this past you.

um, who steals car stereos anymore? that's so 1985? sorry to hear about that, stang.

A few years ago, my car was broken into overnight in front of my friend's house when I was living with them. They took an $80 CD player that didn't work anymore, but they destroyed the dash ripping it out.

I'll never ignore Kelly's growling in the middle of the night. It was not like her to do it too, so I should have paid attention.

Sorry to hear about the break-in. I remember when my sunbird was broken into 7 years ago. I was called in for a meeting at my work, and I, like many people I worked with, parked across the street from our office's building at some closed-down chinese restaurant. The meeting was only 45 minutes long, and sadly, when it was over and I looked out the window, I noticed a bunch of cops going through my car. After I got outside wondering WTF was going on, the cop told me my car was broken into. They took my entire stereo and my duffel bag with all my school textbooks. That was the part that enraged me. My school books cost me more than the car, and stereo combined.

I felt violated too, so I know that crappy feeling you must be having right now. Good luck with your car.

Mustang: I also live in Cedar Rapids, Where were you parked - downtown? Which garage?

I would LOVE to help you educate the individual if caught. Just drop me a note here and I will be there to help administer some tough love to the individual in question...is it too late in the season to take someone swimming down at the 5 in 1 dam? Nothing pisses me off more than a person stealing from somebody else...you want something? Earn it or you don't get it.

If you see a Greystone 2007 Tahoe running around with a Goodguy's member sticker in the center of the back window...that is me. I would be happy to check the pawn shops for your radio...I am sure that is where it will end up.

I was parked at the 4th Ave. Parkade across from the Iowa Building (right next to where Grafton's used to be). They hit it in broad daylight, sometime in the morning. I gave the police the model number of my CD player, but I don't think it's going to be much help.

If you happen to run across a 3 year old Alpine model CDA-9847 in a pawn shop, let me know!
