I was just thinking about some of the upcoming and possible future engines in the pipeline, which would be applicable to a 6th gen Camaro.

If we assume that a 6th gen is even coming, we can also assume that this car will be smaller and lighter than the 5th gen. Let's call it 180-185" in overall length and 3200 -3500 lbs, depending on equipment. This lower mass opens up all sorts of opportunities for some interesting, fun to drive, and economical combos.

Here are some engines off the top of my head:

- GDI 2.3L I4, 210-230 hp.

- GDI 2.0L turbo I4, 260-300 hp.

- GDI 3.0L V6, 255-285 hp.

- GDI 2.8L turbo V6, 350 hp.

- GDI 3.0/3.6L turbo V6, 400-430 hp. (cancelled)

- GDI 3.6L V6, 300-330 hp.

- GDI Gen V smallblock V8 5.0-5.7L 400-450 hp.

A new, smaller, lighter Camaro could be motivated very effectively with a 2.3L Ecotec. Fun to drive and 35 mpg.

The prime mover could be the upcoming 3.0L V6. Enough power and torque to move an option laden Camaro with authority, and still get well over 30 mpg.

An entry level performance version could use a 2.0L turbo/2.8L V6 turbo/ NA 3.6. I'm not sure which one of these to go with.

And finally the performance Z/28 version. I'm still holding out for a smallblock. A 5.xL, direct injected, Gen V smallblock with the power of an LS3, in a tidy 3400 pound package, gives me goosebumps. It would probably get around 30 mpg too.

everyone assuming alpha? let's just run with that.

i'd think the 2.3L would either have BAS or turbo it... either about 200hp or 320hp.

a V6 would be fine IMO. something around 330 - 350hp?

assuming a v8 fits a 5.0 would be more around 375hp and up to a 6.0L would be 460hp...

i think if there is a 4cyl as a base or turbo, there will not be a "small" V6. look at the 'bu. there's an ~80hp gap. these gaps will decrease if na unhybridized engines stick around... they are the least efficient, typically.

this might get interesting if dwightlooi comes in on this. hehe.

upcoming 3.0L? is this true, any professional opinion/facts back this up?

One thing I've noticed...10 years ago, even 5 years ago, all the major automakers had 3.0L V6s..there don't seem to be any now...everything tends toward 3.5 or larger...I wonder if we will the return of smaller V6s in the US...

I would just keep things simple and put either a 2.3DI or 1.8DI turbo in the base Camaro and a Gen V V8 in the SS.

I'd be all for it!

As long as I caan have my V8 (SS or Z/28, preferably Z/28) then I'm all for sticking anything else under the hood. And a 5.0 with that power sounds excellent!

Fun comes in all packages.

The 3.0L wil be standard in the CTS wagon.

in the press release on here it says nothing of a 3.0L the base engine is the 3.6L nonDI.

i googled 3.0L and found a thread about the 240hp 3.0L ford has upgraded to from the 200hp unit.

one or two people have said that industry wide has moved away from that size...

either ford's 3.0L is just packaged very well, or just want to keep the costs down. , 240hp in the small suvs.

I won't get a 4 cylinder a Camaro. It just screams Mustang II to me. I know they have 200 plus hp but in a muscle car they deserve a V6. A 3.6 would be perfect.

I think CAFE will pretty much limit V6 engines to luxury cars by 2015.

Just to play devil's advocate, how would you justify a V8 in an Alpha Camaro?

camaro has always had a V8...(other than the first year?)

if it doesn't get a V8 then the "camaro" needs to go to saturn, "rethink"

Yup. Although don;t you think it's a little too early for

any 6th gen. discussion to be even semi-relevant?

Loki:

The '67 Camaro had had a V8... it's the 'Vette that had to make

due with the blue-flame-6 for '53 & '54.

The 327 (2bbl & 4bbl), SS-350 (sbc) & late-year-intro

SS396 (big block) were all available in 1967 m.y.

I've said it before: it's like 1974 all over again.

Relax, those are stome strong (IMHO stupid) words,

and quite a bold prediction.

Yeah...check back in 4-5 years.

Considering that all the other Zeta 2's are essentially dead...

and this Camaro weighs nearly two tons just when consumers are shunning such products....

and it will be CAFE negative just as CAFE averages are set to increase...

AND...........

GM will soon seek to spread costs on Alpha's development.....

I'd say, no, it's not too early to talk about a 6th gen. :)

There was also a 302cid V8 late in the '67 model year (read Z/28).

Is 350HP actually possible out of the 2.8L? That's nearly 200HP/L.

I'd do something like this:

2.3L DI I4 220HP.

2.8L turbo DI V6 300HP OR 3.6L DI 300HP (whichever gets better MPG).

V8 with 425HP.

What about the 2.1 Turbo that I seen a spec sheet on?

They have given the 2.0 a little more stroke and a little more compresion.

283-300 HP.

Where'd you see that, if you don't mind me asking?
