no actually, im not against the FWD thing at all... ittl keep me from spending money on performance parts! im seriously considering the A bodies, and a toronado sounds awesome too.. ill keep an eye out... im digging this.. i wish i had the cash to go look!

I always wanted the station wagon version of the Ciera (sans woodgrain of course)- that was sharp for an old ancient battle tank.

other reasons i dont want to DD the car... its always been planned to be a race car eventually... thats why i bought the car... since i wont have to worry as much about gas, i can do what i want to the nova.. like the T56, the 4:10 gears, my minitub and cage, backseat delete and fiberglass hood.. the car will be streetable of course, just not good for the 15 mile one way trip to school, or next year when im doing 20 miles each way to college...

Not trying to step on anyones toes... JUST GIVING A FRIENDLY REALITY CHECK.

I myself needed one the other day. The Banana's H2O pump detonated like a

grenade, sending coolant all over the road & shredding the bearing like a piece

of shrapnel hitting through a B-17 fuselage.

I called up XP (he works at a local Auto Parts Store) and bitched and moaned

about high gas prices... etc. and now my H2O pump is fubared blah-blah BLAH.

He was unsympathetic and told me to stop crying about my pussy hurting.

And you know what? He was right.

My excise tax on the Banana is $7 a year versus the typical $250-$700 for a

typical "late model" used car. (based on car's perceived value) My insurance

is dirt cheap compared to same and oh yeah... that's RIGHT my car payment

is ZERO dollars a month. The '77 Cadillac is PAYED for just like my B-59.

I get just as much, if not more enjoyment out of the car as ANYTHING new

or used I could semi afford.

The lack of a $250/month payment for some crappy modern car MORE than

makes up for the $120 extra in gas I spend a month. That will be down to

much less once I stop delivering Chinese Food in my 425ci Caddy in heavy

downtown traffic. That's just stupidity. :P

Oh yeah and that H2O pump.... got a new one for less than $30, cost me

about $50 after the coolant, high-temp. RTV gasket & one new fan belt.

I did the repair right on the side of the road, took me a couple hours but I

just managed to get the job done by sundown.

Who's saving money now???

Gas is expensive, yes. Especially when you're driving a 425 cubic inch,

(seven litre) V8, but you know what's worse? You know what's even

MORE expensive (in the SHORT or LONG run) ?

$800 to replace a piece of $h! rubber timing belt in a Honda

$500 EVERY month for a car payent on a FWD V6 Tylenol pill

$600 for a water pump replacement in a FWD $h!box where

the H2O pump is hidden from any possible access.

Think about it if I end up driving the Banana 15,000 miles this year

@ 13mpg (realistic) I will burn off 1153 gallons of gas.

Let's assume $3.09 a gallon (current price here) that totals: $3565

Now lets assume I was married to some deuchebag and my balls

were in her purse... I might (let's pretend) get some tiny four

cylinder car with a GVWR of less than half of the Cadillac, let's say

it averages 26mpg (optimistic MPG for even the smallest of cars)

so this would mean I'd only bur off 1/2 the gallons/$:

Total savings: $1782 for a whole year.

Again, it would be offset by a car payment and/or the fact that I

would be giving up my super cool '77 Coupe deVille for some

uninspired and lame modern "transportation pod".

but im not talking about a new car... i hate new cars.. im talking about a reliable $h!box to put around in.. your cars are crusiers, my car is going all race... i totally love how easy my car is to work on, the attention i get, and driving it, but without another vehicle, i cant work on mine.. i have school 5 days a week (my school is 15 miles away) work 4 or 5 days a week, and i have to get to the firehouse all the time... to top it off, my girlfriend lives 16 miles from my house... aolt of driving if i do say so myself..the nova could do it, but i cant afford it... if i spend $1k on a beater in good shape, its definatley worth it... theres nothing more i want then to do then drive the nova every day... gas isnt cheap on a 17 year old guy with a part ime job stocking frozen food...

Oh, Cmon, CMG. We had a 1994 with the 3.8L and it got 42MPG consistently as it plowed across Alberta's flatland, even with 100K miles on it. It got like 36-37MPG in the Mountain passes. They were good vans and we still regret selling ours, Nine Years Later. They weren't that bad (Well, Ours Wasn't)

I'd considered a used minivan for the wifie-it would be nice to have something that was good on gas on could haul stuff around-and not be a dodge...

There are good ones out there up here, mostly 3.8L Pontiacs. They did REAL well up here, surprisingly, especially in Quebec. I've seen quite a few nice well kept ones with like 120K miles that would be worth it. There's lots of them at GM Dealers too being sold for peanuts. I want to buy one in a couple of years, do a full engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, fix the interior and paint to like new and preserve it for a while. Of all the vehicles GM has made in the last twenty years, it's possible this is the most special one to me (as odd as it can sound to say such things).

The rims are a subjective subject. The ones pictured in the above picture were the factory 1993-1994 Alloys, having had a 94, those wheels are a must to me but others think the 1995-1996 Wheels were better:

While Accords and Civics are good cars, under 5k he will get tons more with tons more choices if he goes GM.

dont be so sure... my one friend just got a 94 Explorer for 800, cracked winshield and ripped drivers seat... otherwise, mint.

another found his girlfriend a 93 taurus for 750.... so far, ive found alot of deals in FWD cars and small trucks, but i cant pounce on them now... my major expense im saving up for is my senior prom in 2 months, but i almost have all the money, then all my cash is straight into the car fund.

i also have a friend im selling the subframe, passenger door and springs out of the $40 parts nova, so theres some more cash right there.... im confident i can get a decent deal for $1000..... will it be a show winner? no.... will it be ugly? probably... but this is my appliance im looking for... point A- point B

$1,000 will still get you plenty of cars, you just have to know where to look. You can't be afraid to walk up to someone's door and say: "Hi! Is your husband around? He was saying something about how he wanted to sell that car in his yard because he wanted to buy his wife something expensive or something like that. He's not around? But you have the title? A thousand dollars can buy a reliable car. I work construction (I am an electrical foreman) so I buy cheap cars because parking cars on construction sites is hard on them.

Once I came out to find my Chrysler Concorde had gone from Teal to Black because the painting crew had forgotten to ask me to move my car before they painted the building. Other "fun" things have happened.

My current beater is a 91 Mazda MX-6 (Basically a rebadged Ford Probe) that I justify on about three counts...

About a grand to buy it, get it safe, and get it registered.

American Made by Ford on a American Assembly line.

Manual shift and it gets 33-35 if I don't drive like I'm retarded.

A friend has a really decent Fort Contour you might like, it's one owner, needs a fender and a little bit of (minor) body work. It has about 110k on it and the interior is spotless. Contour was a decent driving car and this thing has been taken care of.

A grand can go far if your careful.

But enjoy prom also. I drove my 70 Chevelle to mine (back in 83!). Nothing like driving a classic Chevy to a prom. At least do that with your Nova.

...or if you decide to get rid of the Nova I have a nice warm garage in Ohio where it can come live under a warm car cover. Sixty 8 is right, you should be proud of that ride.

One of my few talents in this life is the ability to buy a KICKASS semi-classic

car for well under a $1000 bucks.

I may have payed WAY more than a mere K for the B-59 and my '68 Camaro

but I've owned many a Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chevy truck & more

recently Buick that was purchased from a desperate/stupid/"lost interest"

owner who just wanted to get rid of the car.

You know FlyBrian's LeSabre...? I put it up for sale for $1300 O.B.O. but when

Fly approached me about it I sold it to him for $800. I still have not seen the

$120 delivery fee to Penn. (supposed to cover gas tolls) but I still managed to

make a small profit on the car AFTER the few minor preventative repairs I did,

the gas to Penn. for the B-76 AND gas for SP's chase car: the Shelby Turbo

Daytona... if I had sold it to the kid from upsate NY who called JUST after

Fly did I probably would have sold it for the $1300 which would have meant

doubling my money. He was all hot and horny over that 455 powered

bicentenial Buick hardtop and was not even attempting to negotiate price but

rather trying to set up an appointment to come by and pay for it.

You'd crap your collective pants if I told you what I payed for my Banana Boat

the first time I bought it.... not even close to a thousand! Remember short

term daily driven '62 Buick Special?

$800. And that car I traded for a truck a guy wanted $2000 obo ($1600 firm)

So yes, if you invest the time to weed out a few dozen crappy craigslist ads,

said cars with CASH in hand... the GREEN stuff and offer instant cash on the

spot you can score some phucking awesome deals!

That being said SS623, you should just keep your Nova and fix it on a budget

with a good combo of junkyard parts & NAPA/Pep-Boys/Autozone/Advanced

items... better that and pay a little extra in gas than:

INSURING

&

GASSING UP

another vehicle... or not, only you know the exact math, but think twice

before you go jumping into a moneypit, your Nova is one of the LEAST

I, too, have paid pennies on the dollar for many of my world-class beaters:

1971 Cadillac Sedan DeVille: $300

1974 Lincoln Continental Executive Limousine: FREE

1977 Cadillac Coupe DeVille: $800

1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme sedan: $230

1978 Cadillac Coupe DeVille: $420

1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille: $350

1990 Chevrolet Suburban Silverado V1500: $400

Average price paid for my beaters: $357.14 :P

I also traded the $230 Oldsmobile listed above along with a 1971 Cadillac Coupe DeVille I had about $1600 into TOTAL (purchase price of the car plus repairs) for my 1967 Cadillac Eldorado that the guy wanted $3300 for ($3000 firm). You just gotta be willing to pound the pavement and look high and low for good deals because they definitely are out there.

Ditto on the Mustang/Nova thing. The biggest thing I don't like about driving a Nova daily is that decent ones are getting hard to find and bad things happen to cars left unattended in public parking lots.

His Nova is too much car to risk. Fox body Mustang? Hell yes, put it in a parking lot in crack heaven, run it around an SCCA/Nasa racetrack at 130 miles an hour, cannabalize it to build a Cobra replica...but the Nova...that's automotive art dude.

That Nova needs to be pampered and preserved, period.

68, what your not getting is that besides gas mileage and worrying about parking the car in less then desirable areas, i still have big projects for the car that requiires the car to be off the road for a while... the paintjob currently on it looks good from afew feet away, but its rallt a $h! job.. the guy who did it used a lot of bondo which is cracking, and the paint didnt adhere well. I wanna take the paint down to metal and start body work, and on a larger scale im seriously considering doing a 6 speed swap into the car, which is no simple task... alot of fabrication, meaning it will be undrivable for a while... the smartest choice is to take it off the road, switch the insurance to another car for a while, and drive that cheap tank for a while.... iim looking at over 100 miles a week now, but that will jump to over 300 miles a week come september.... lets give the nova the benefit of the doubt and say 10 mpg.... thats over $100 a week in gas.... i only make $150 a week now on a good week... see a problem here?

i usually feel that way... and id have another classic V8 to daily drive if this gas situation wasnt what it is!

hell, if gas was super cheap, id Daily Drive a 427 impala with a Glide and 4:10s!

I'm not sure what I want at the moment, but I know it will be two things: it will be a GM, and a classic. (and an auto so my wife and family can drive....)

The catch is I'm not going to be able to afford a lot (with a baby coming), so my classic has to be in good shape, and cheap...

hehe didnd chevy make a nova that was ont he same platform as the corolla? i am pretty sure i have seen at least an 84 nova that looks like that.

in fact i found one here so technically you can stay in a nova!

I have to agree with the A-bodies. Just stick with the Cutlass or Century. Try to get a little newer so you can get a 3.8. They really are bullet proof.

This car is the forbearer for the later Geo/Chevrolet Prizm.

My only knowledge concerning the Nova/Corolla is that the Toyota Corolla sedans were front-drive, while the coupe and hatch were rear-drive.

yea.. the one im looking at above is a RWD platform, while the Nova/ Corolla was a FWD... i hate toyotas, but i talked to the guy today.. 105,000 very little rust, no rot, mechanically sound, great on gas, $650 NEG.... i have to look into this.... im destroying the fact that noone in my immediate family has owned an asian car, but any comments on it? Camino, i agree that it is not sporty (80+HP!!! woo!) but from a strictly cheap beater standpoint, im liking the idea!

300$ more gets you an A-Body with more than 100HP. Better Idea, IMO.

chevette has run through my mind, but most around are worn out then a $5 hooker....and i am looking at A-Bodies, but the thought of RWD makes me a bit happier... and the price! i can prob swing it for $600 or less out the door...i aint gonna be a toyota fanboy, but im digging it a bit...

id be the asshole telling girls i have a vette all the time!... lol im trying to stay away from the hatchback style.... i like the notchback/liftback look.. i know im being picky for a beater, but 2 doors are best, and chevette looks a bit too poverty for me... though im digging the wood grain... drop in a 572 BBC maybe? :AH-HA_wink:
