This is the '76 Monte Carlo my dad is considering to buy. The car is totally rust-free and only needs some mild interior work. The cost is four grand, but my dad says the owner seems to be flexible on the price up to one grand.

Well, I think my dad would like the challenge. And I know I'm most certainly up to it. There is no challenge too great for the likes of myself. :AH-HA_wink:

They do have strong family ties (unlike that bastard two-door W-Body of the same name).

DAMN LUMINA/IMPALA COUPE! *shakes fist*

Speaking of the second-generation Impalumina coupe, has anyone ever noticed that the headlights are in the shape of bloated, jellybean bowties?

looks good, hope you can make a deal for it

I'm going to see if dad will go back tomorrow and take it for another test drive. I think that could persuade him to start some negotiations. :AH-HA_wink:

You are welcome!

If your Dad does purchase that '76 MC, I can give you a few links to groups, too ;).

They do have strong family ties.

Yes, indeed. In fact ... the '81 and '76 MCs are "opposites", in a way.

The '76 headlights are verticle; the '81 headlights are horizontal.

The reflectors in the '76 taillights is horizontal; the reflectors in the '81 taillights are verticle.

Interesting, eh?

And, yes, I had noticed that about those headlights....

You know, I have always found the styling of the second-generation Montes the most graceful. The fenders are bold and suggest power but are elegant and flowing at the same time.

My Dad used to have an Impala that exact same color, so I'm going to have to say go for it, as long as there are no underlying issues like bondo, collision damage or drivability problems.

As far as he could tell, there is no bondo or collision damage done to the car. As for drivabilty, he tells me that it does have one problem concerning that: it hauls way too much ass. :smilewide: :AH-HA_wink:

Update: We have had a busy evening today, so our father-son test drive had to be postponed until tomorrow afternoon. I think that another look at the car will convince him to negotiate with the seller a bit and take it from there.

This pic worries me a bit:

SANY0588.jpg

That looks to be some rust near the lower corner on the door. It's probably only surface rust given the condition of the rest of the car, but really look it over. Check the underside of the doors, inside the trunk, all behind the back glass - all the typcal water drainage points. I'm not saying don't get it, but anythig you find, you can use as ammo to get him to knock the price down

The interior is, well, quite a piece of work. The dash is the worst part as it looks like he went a little crazy with the green paint, and it has the typical cracks. If you get the car, I'd love to know how you end up fixing the dash.

I wouldn't be surprised about the dash pad, but what about the plastic piece surrounding the auxiliary gages? I thought that was black, like in my fathers/grandfather's '73 MC

Actually, it should be. But, that green is a factory color - maybe out of a Chevelle?

Or an assembly line error?

Something odd there. :scratchchin:

Cort would probably know the real story, but I want to say that GM went to an all-color dash in 1974 judging by what I see here.

*nods*

They did. It IS a factory dash AND a factory color. I've seen a couple of them that color.....

A buddy of mine had a '73 MC 454 with the swivel bucket seats. I remember the first time I got in it, I was "stunned" to see the black section around the gauges ... only because I remembered my parents' '76 MC (tan with brown dash) had an all-brown dash ... no black section. That's when I learned about the change in the dashboard coloring.

As for the dash being Chevelle-like, I thought the Chevelles (for the most part) of this generation had the rectangular gauges ... that the round gauges were for the Lagunas and an option on the others...no?

Monte Carlos have always had circular gauges from the factory ... and, from pics I've seen from '73-'83 versions, have always had the same wood grain (or whatever they used ... it was black around the gauges in the '78s and '79s...no woodgrain then, from what I recall, anyway) treatment as the Malibus/Chevelles.... The first gen MCs, I don't think the dash was different at all from the Malibus/Chevelles...was it?

Or, was the rectangular gauges only on '78-'83 Malibus? Though ... seems to me I've seen rectangular gauges in the '73-'77 Malibus/Chevelles, too, from the factory.... Anyway, I'll never forget the first time I sat in one of those '78-'83 Malibus as a kid ... and was astonished to see the rectangular gauges (versus the circular ones I was used to one Mom and Dad's, now mine, '81 MC). LOL!

(Or maybe I'm just hallucinating ... hope I'm not getting sick ... lol!)

But ... for reference...

My '79 MC dash (notice the black around the gauge area)...

http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1979/79MC1007_13_JPG.html

...from what I've seen ... the '78-'79 dashes in the Malibus and Monte Carlos are identical, except for rectangular gauges in the Malibus, round in the MCs....

My '81 MC dash:

http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1981/81MC1007_12_JPG.html

I know these dashes are identical between the Malibu and Monte Carlo, except for the gauges (rectangle - Malibu; round - MC) because I almost bought an '82 Malibu with that EXACT dash (rectangular gauges) for my winter beater.....

One last tidbit on the 73-77s.

To my eye, the woodgrain on the IP of the Montes always looked richer/darker with a more interesting pattern vs. the plain, lighter woodgrain on the Chevelles. At least this seems to be true of the early Montes, this car looks just like my Caminos and wagon woodgrain wise.

I wish that were the case, that the car was really out in the driveway right now and this was all a joke. But, sadly, it isn't. He was headed home to get the money and then started reconsidering about half way into the drive back.

I think he can still be convinced, however. :AH-HA_wink:

Also, if you wouldn't mind me asking for my dad, he asked me on the way home to ask you what you think that particular Monte would be worth, asking price of the car disregarded, and what it could be worth with the restoration finished.

I hope you do get to feeling better, Cort. The flu is never fun. I had to make due with a mild case of it late last month (it seems that I am more vulnerable to the flu than ever since I had a flu shot back in January) and it was a nightmare to put up with. I still have an annoying cough from it.

Hmmm...that IS nice, no doubt about it. But, not enough pictures for my taste. I have made it a point to NOT go take a look at a car I see online for sale, unless I see multiple pictures of it first. Been "burned" and "disappointed" one too many times, with lots of wasted time and fuel.

Also ... see that first pic?

Ask the current owner if it has been repainted/re-vinyl topped. I do NOT believe that emblem on the back is in the correct spot. Observe:

http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1976/76MC1007_02_JPG.html

http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1976/76MC1007_01_JPG.html

I'd have to dig out my 1973 MC brochures, but I'm 90% positive that the '73 emblem was in about the same spot as the '76. Those placements did not (as I recall, anyway ... maybe someone else will prove me 100% wrong, I dunno) change much....at least, not as much as it appears in that pic of that '73....

NOT trying to be a "downer" or a "red flag waver" here ... just pointing it out. Might mean "underlying" issues with that car, is all, if they, indeed, had it repainted and re-vinyled. If so ... (and I'm sure you know this) ... make sure you ask what and how all was done.....

AS before ... KEEP US POSTED.

Love the swivel buckets, but they appear to be covered in non-stock material that is similar to, but doesn't match the original-looking back seat. The '73 GM A and A-Specials were very popular when they were new, less so now, but I like them, even with their park bench front bumpers. I think Camino might have a soft spot for this era as well.

True that.

I hated them when they were new (or newish), preferring the older 68-72 styles (still do really). But as time went on, I realized that these cars could be very cool with a little power increase, and they are uber-comfortable.

There are also some stand outs among them like Can Am/Grand Am pontiacs and the M/C which I think is a better looking car than the 70-72 version.

What's great about them now is that the bodystyle is overlooked and inexpensive, while maintaining a very familiar and workable chassis. These cars can be every bit as powerful as the earlier cars and rank much higher in creature comfort.

I see them as a good buy and as appreciating classics. The prices for nice ones have been climbing lately.

Hey there, we noticed you're using an ad-blocker. We're a small site that is supported by ads or subscriptions. We rely on these to pay for server costs and vehicle reviews.  Please consider whitelisting us in your ad-blocker, or if you really like what you see, you can pick up one of our subscriptions for just $1.75 a month or $15 a year. It may not seem like a lot, but it goes a long way to help support real, honest content, that isn't generated by an AI bot.

See you out there.
