February 1, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported January sales of 171,849 vehicles, a decrease of 2.3 percent from last January.

"On the retail front, consumers are sitting in the catbird's seat, with falling interest rates and a competitive market giving rise to showroom values," said Jim Lentz, TMS president. The Toyota Division posted January sales of 151,550, a decrease of 1.4 percent from last January. The Lexus Division reported January sales of 20,299 units, a decrease of 8.2 percent from the year-ago month.

I like how they had the GS 350 and GS 450/460h separated, as if they were any different besides powertrains... Guess they wanted to show a positive gain SOMEwhere in their cars...

Moreover, why is the GS460 and GS450h listed together? Is that a typo?

Did you see how cleverly the Toy PR machine has shown "increase" in the domestic products produced by it? GM PR needs to learn from these bitches to improve the perception of its in the minds of sheeple Americans.

No other manufacturer shows those numbers. Toy is just trying hard to be a domestic manufacturer.

toyota really is pouring on the incentives. they are clearly obsessed with volume at any cost.

Psst...GM's incentives were up almost 40% vs Jan. 07, too!

Toyota knows how to put their foot on the competitions throat, so it isn't surprising that they're pouring on incentives, especially since the Corolla inventory needs to be cleared and the Camry has fresh competition (which is nice to say about the 'bu, finally.)

Unfortunately, GM is still at $3,400/unit...one of the reasons they bucked this month's downward trend in the marketplace. I'm looking forward to GM keeping the momentum going...they've teased their fan base before with decent figures, albeit fleet 'juiced' in the past months.

So much for Toyota capping Scion sales at 150k annually

At this rate, they may hit 100k and thats with 2/3rds of the line-up being fresh!

As I said in another post, Scion is like a one hit wonder band. The xB (original gen) sold well, the TC sold well for awhile, but I doubt that they will get the "majic" back again.

This is not suprising at any rate. The economy is in horrible shape and both Toyota and Gm have a huge overhead they have to keep fed by building and selling cars.

I would expect strong money non the hood of a lot of cars for quite some time to come. The market has too many players for too few buyers, and that juast ain't gonna change.

Toyota has taken out center-spread, two full page, full color ads in papers around here, touting their new 'lower' pricing. Not a good time to have a Lexus dealer around here. A lot of their customers (being somewhat mercenary to begin with) have flocked to the U.S. to buy their new vehicles, whereas GM's customers are a little more loyal and GM is enticing them with 72 month 0% financing and (first time ever) 0% leases.

I would be curious to see how many Toyotas were 'purchases' in the U.S. and ended up here. The numbers would be in the several thousands for last year, I would guess. More remarkable, considering Toyota's sales are down in the U.S. for January.

In Canada, GM's sales are up a remarkable 18.3%, year over year. Honda is the real stunner: up 76.4% in one month. Chrysler, 1.9%. Toyota, 3.1%. Ford, 9.7%. All in a market that is up 13%, year over year. I suspect a lot of cross-border shoppers who were waiting in the wings suddenly decided they had to buy a new car. I wonder what is up with Honda, other than the fact they, too, have been advertising incentives like crazy. This January was phenomenal, sales-wise.

One of the things Oldsmoboi, Balt, Sixty Eight and others here are making me aware of is how Japanese "luxury" cars don't really have the feel/features/heritage of a real luxury car.

I can put up with a cheap interior if I spend $5k on a used 96 Miata for a weekend car. In a $35k "luxury" car like Lexus or Acura or Infinity the Japanese (I am finally seeing) really can't compete. Also realizing how cheap/featureless the interiors of other "upscale" cars like the EVO and STI are also.

Wondering if maybe some of youyr Canadian comrades are feeling the same thing. A Toronto Lexus dealership would not be high on my "to own list" right now.

With the dollar so weak though, why would Americans go to Canada to buy a car? Also, aren't there a million legal and tax issues for moving a north of the border car south?

Lexus is over-priced to begin with, but we Canadians have always taken it up the ying-yang with auto prices. The recent surge in our dollar has made it painful. I know of a few people who have gone south of the border to buy their chariots, but only in the high-end of things.

It isn't that a Lexus dealership is NOT a good investment - clearly, it is; however, Toyota is getting increasingly demanding with its dealers and you should see some of the new Toyo and Lexus palaces that have been built up here in the past couple years. The company I used to work for is building two cantilvered wings, jutting out over a hillside: one for Toyota and one for Lexus, with a skywalk to the service area and parking. Can you say BIG MORTGAGE? Perhaps Toyota is overcompensating, shall we say, for their lack of heritage, or maybe they are just playing catch up to BMW and Mercedes? In any case, with the recent storm clouds on the economic horizon, and knowing how fickle the buying public can be, I certainly wouldn't want to be holding the paper on those new dealerships.

As an aside it is amazing how much we waste environmentally by building big flashy buildings and then tearing them down. In ten or 15 years those buildings will be "dated" and they will be torn down to build the next white elephant.
