My friend just bought a dark grey 2006 4.0l v6 5-speed Mustang. The shift knob top rotates fairly freely. I was taking it for a little drive, and tried to shift from first to second without fully gripping the shifter - I just sort of put my hand on the top right side like I do in the Cobalt. This should work since you're pulling it down and left to go to 2nd. However, the knob rotated a full 180, and my hand slipped off the shifter. Nothing bad happened from this - I just thought I should relate what is wrong. He said he's taken it in to the dealer to ask about it, and they said it's supposed to rotate, to "accomodate different grip styles". It's not completely loose since it wont come up if you pull, but it will rotate easily. Is this right?

Whether or not it actually was designed to rotate depends on the answer to this one question "Did the shifter knob in the 1968 Mustang rotate?" http://www.cheersandgears.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rotflmao.gif

Seriously I've never heard of a shifter knob that rotates by design. And given that the scenario where you wanted to shift but couldn't, it's possible that could happen at a more critical time. I'd take it to another dealer, and if that doesn't give satisfaction, complain to the Ford zone representative.

Is it the shift knob itself rotating, or is the shifter shaft rotating? If it is just the knob try and screw the knob clockwise, it should tigheten on. Either way the ford guy is full of crap! <_< Edited by Cremazie

It is just the knob.

It is not unscrewed. You can rotate it as many times as you like in either direction, it doesn't tighten or loosen.

I would do as z28luvr01 said and take it to another dealer, doesn't sound right to me.
