Maybe this is Toyota's way of going retro? They can't go back to the 30s or 40s or 50s like Ford, GM, Chrysler, or VW, so they go back to 1985 instead.

edit: They would have been better off spelling out T O Y O T A across the grill rather than using the Taurus badge.

What's the difference between the Sequoia and the Land Cruiser? Aside from $30,000 and the size of the V8? Doesn't it seem kind of redundant? Couldn't they just offer the 5.7L in the Sequoia and call it a day? A $60,000+ vehicle should be in the Lexus lineup... oh wait, there is an almost identical vehicle at a similar price in the Lexus lineup already. But I suppose they'll bump the next LX up a good 10-20 grand with the redesign.

redesigned with a look that evokes the Tundra's bold front end

Just be glad you get the 5.7 L V8 and 6-speed auto—the rest of the world makes do with an upgraded 4.7 L and 5-speed auto. This is not-so all-new as Toyota claims, but like the Expedition and GMT 900s is based closely on the previous generation (major dimensions are either the same or similar, inside and out). Why so expensive? Well almost all are purchased by the UN, and practically none, anywhere, by private buyers and sales are extremely low. The volume Land Cruiser is the smaller 120 Series (sold in the US as the GX470), available in most markets with a far more fuel-efficient 3.0 L diesel, which in some markets has already completely replaced the 100 Series.

While it certainly has heritage and off-road capability, it does little for Toyota in the long run. It's a waste of development money. If you want to spend $55K on a luxury SUV, you don't go into a Toyota dealership. That is what Lexus is for.
