I've been thinking (yeah, yeah-I know :AH-HA_wink: )

Anyways, I've been thinking about what I could replace the wagon with.

I've seen quite a few 98-01 Blazers around here for sale, with most running between 3-6 grand, and many with 4x4 power... :scratchchin:

A cheap Suv beater would be nice, so I could take it camping, haul stuff (and dogs) and take bunches of people with me...

Good stuff: Cheap, the 4.3 (most I've seen are around 100k) which should last a while...good for winter here...

Bad: Lots of little issues...

I saw a 01/02 trailbalzer (fancy blazer) with 101k for 4600...didn't sound too bad....

THoughts?

I know BV wants to get in on this one... :AH-HA_wink:

Basically, does the Blazer make a good beater?

I had a '98 Blazer that I leased new and had for three years. Never had a problem with it. I think the electronic drive selector acted up at one point, but that was it. Our receptionist has a '99 that she bought used 3 years ago and she loves it. She won't part with it. Like any SUV, the real risk is how did the previous owner treat it? If they beat it up and barely did the maintenance, then you are bound to have problems. Brake repairs are expensive on these trucks, so make good friends with your mechanic.

Seriously now: would you consider a Cherokee/Liberty?

Yeah yeah.....

I'm guessing a Liberty is a bit out of my price range...I haven't seen many cheap ones....

As far as Cherokees go, I do like them-even more if I could find a nice cheap one......

Mid 90s, maybe?

What kind of issues would look out for (or their best made years maybe..)

I know those had issues too...

(though if I remember, they had a good engine too)

The best truck I've ever owned was the only non-CK based truck I ever had.

1991 Blazer 2dr 4x4, 5-speed 4.3 V6.

I beat the $HIT out of it for about a year and it just kept asking for more.

Bought it for $600 with 104K miles and sold it for $1000 with 128K miles

about 15 months later only to buy a lemon of a Suburban. The Suburban

probably would have been a better truck had someone not screwed up

the transmission. Still the Suburban had a 1/4 million miles on it.

Let's put it this way, I found like 6 Grand Cherokees for under 6k and the Cherokees are even less. I see a `95 Sport with 138k for 3,870.

I haven't checked but you can go to auto.consumerguide.com for reliability info...it's very useful.

Those years seem quite good....A friend in college had a 91 4.3 2wd 4dr....it had well over 200k beforre someone rear ended it... :(

Problem is that they run into the same problem I have with the Cav wagon.....rust, rust, and more rust...

If I could find one with no or little rust I would really consider it...

It's funnt you mention them both..because I only thought GC.....

If I got a regular Cherokee, I think I would stay 97+....the only pre 96 I still see here are quite rusty....

Don't really know about any issues. Other people in the boards might help you on that.

My brother had one that withstood abuse pretty well, and his boss had one that lasted forever with just regular maintenance. Both cars were used in a desert climate, so I'd say they're solid vehicles.

Both of my neighbor's sons own 90's Grand Cherokees and seem to love them. I once had a few "acquaintances" with regular Cherokees. They sure do rust, as you said. :P

Strange, but true. Makes one wonder...
