If I remember correctly, the El Camino was popular because it offered car like handling with the utility of a truck, and like a truck, they were tough. Australians actually use these for work, and they have a very tough reputation. If I am not also mistaken, people still like to have a truck around, but they also like the handling of a car and the fuel economy of a car. Now that gas prices are $3, it makes perfect sense to bring a truck like this to market. I think this is a vehicle whose time has come. . . . . again.

You guys checked out the chop comp yet? some pretty nice lookin GMC chops over there. I feel like the car has potential as a GMC if it is equipped and marketed correctly. It looks pretty upscale in the trim, if nothing else, and seems to fit into the lower end of the lineup nicely.

I've seen that done before, but the "tow vehicle" was just as radical as the "race car". I can't imagine that the guy actually towed that way.

Here is a frightening fact I just found out, both the 1969 Chevy El Camino and the Pontiac Custom-S were assembled at the Baltimore Assembly plant on the same assembly line.

Actually, the Camino was built at several different plants back then. Kansas City was one of the others.

Oh that I know, I just wasn't aware that in Baltimore where my Custom-S was assembled, that it was actually assembled on the same assembly line as the El Camino. My thinking was there were two different lines running at the same plant.

Where my 1997 Grand Prix GT , 1998 Grand Prix GTP and 2002 Grand Prix GT, were also built.

I toured that plant in 1972. I was 8 years old, and watching those A-bodies come down that line is something I'll never forget.
