I've always liked Pull even though it went with a darker, grungier sound. Same with Dog Eat Dog by Warrant...a lot of people didn't like the direction they took on that one but there's some really powerful stuff on there (and just as melodic as the early stuff). The song "Andy Warhol Was Right" is pretty chilling when you think of it in terms of all the school shootings going on today. A lot of other hair bands that released albums after the grunge movement took storm were pretty lame, but these two have always stood head above the rest to me.

I don't have Dog Eat Dog, but I have heard it through a few times, and I didn't mind it much. I was just a bit upset that the hooks weren't as catchy as 'Down Boys' which itself had a heavier sound than a good chunk of their material.

Hear About it Later - Live at Oakland '81

You know, VH could make a fair amount of change if they released some live CDs and DVDs from the pre-Sammy years. There's definitely a pent up demand for it, at least among the VH faithful.

Heh. I had that 'Hear About It Later' video saved onto my Hard Drive, because that video is an awesome display of what Van Halen was.

Fair Warning is probably my favorite VH album from the DLR days. '81 and around there were some dark times for the band and you can hear it in the album (and even see it somewhat in the Oakland videos). It would be so awesome to go back in time and see Van Halen live in its prime.

Listening to Only Child - "In My Blood"...kind of a mid-90s Van Hagar-sounding band, pretty good.

Well of course. Other bands all sound the same because they play music. :P

Hell, just for the fun of it...

Bands that own SOAD

U2 vs SOAD

U2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k04KzgYRKrE

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

U2 Wins. U2 has lyrics that can be understood, and has a real melody going for it.

Van Halen vs SOAD

VH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e-vgQSqNtA

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

Van Halen wins because it has DLR, Edward Van Halen, not to mention one hell of a memorable tune.

RUSH vs SOAD

RUSH: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-13...h&plindex=0

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

RUSH wins. No explanation necessary

Def Leppard vs SOAD

DL: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=404...h&plindex=3

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

Def Leppard wins, simply because they have two albums on Rolling Stone's 500 best albums. SOAD doesn't have one. :P Speaking of 'one' , lets see SOAD's drummer use one arm. :D

Motley Crue vs SOAD

Crue: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-70...h&plindex=2

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

Crue win. Just pretend they aren't wearing what they are in the video.

RATT vs SOAD

RATT: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=775...h&plindex=0

SOAD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg

You can 'Ratt n' Roll' but you can't SOAD n' Roll! Round & Round.

Weird Al Yankovic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92gsJbc4AEA

Ham on! Ham on! Ham on wholewheat! Alright!

I think you just summed up in one post all the reasons why I freakin' hate the '80s. Plus I just lost any respect I had for Van Halen when I found out that "Jump" (pop sh*t) song was theirs.

Quite a few people I know didn't know Jump was a Van Halen song. That song is either loved or hated, for a couple reasons, at least among Halen fans.

Perhaps save for Ratt, the songs I posted aren't any of the bands best. I just wanted to show that their more plebeian material is still well made, and show their songwriting talent. You may hate the style, but the technical prowess, and attention to detail is excellent.

Of course, the punk-rock of today seems to have a 'messier' feel, and I suppose it's just part of their message.

Not as if everything from the 80's sucks. http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=423...h&plindex=1 8)

There are good songs from EVERY decade. It's just that the '80s had so few redeeming ones for my taste.

I think the only hair metal band I actually came to appreciate is Iron Maiden. Insane guitar skills, but they figured out how to write insanely fast riffs and put them into GOOD songs and not just wank on stage, 'look how fast I can play'.

You guys should take a listen to this song: "Welcome Home" by Coheed & Cambria. The singer's voice, shall I say, isn't for everyone but the instrumentals are decent and more like classic rock. The album, "Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV" was ranked 69th in the October '06 issue of Guitar World for the "100 greatest guitar albums of all time" if that means anything. :P

Van Halen's debut came 7th. RUSH's 'Moving Pictures' came 27th. I'll stick with classic rock :P

I'm not sure how Nirvana's 'Nevermind' came 8th.

Green Day isn't all that bad, though their earlier stuff is much better, of which I don't have.

I can't for the life of me STAND 'American Idiot' . It's so overhyped. But around my area, only idiot 12 year old kiddies who hated America for reasons they didn't even know, so I guess that doesn't help much. Plus, it just sounds like noise to me. :P

Iron Maiden is not hair metal. I've heard people call Metallica hair metal before too. "Hair metal" is Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Winger, Dokken, etc...although glam metal is a more specific term for the genre. Iron Maiden was a straight up heavy metal band. Just because a band had long hair does not make them a hair metal band. :AH-HA_wink:

But to each his own. I used to hate 80s music up until I was about a sophomore in high school, then I actually started "listening" to it and now it's the decade I like the most. I just can't find anything redeeming about modern rock besides a few bands that stand out here and there. The 80s had a lot of cliches, but the music was fun, loud, unrestrained party rock.

On the way to the office it was Machine Head.

Listening to my younger brother telling me that my music sucks, and in the same sentence, says that Greenday and Billy Talent are much better than 'ancient' bands like Def Leppard and Van Halen.

Of course, I whipped out the sales charts of both bands versus Greenday and Billy Talent.

I win. :D

I really shouldn't have complained about War Pigs. I just had to do Sweet Child of Mine about 5 times before finally getting to the end.

Slash is the man! (though I still don't like many of their songs)
