This is why there is an emphasis on small cars having large bumpers that will catch SUV bumpers, and an emphasis on CUVs with bumpers that meet on the same level as a car's bumper.

Side impact, while on average better than what's seen here, still has a long way to go in protecting against SUVs. I wonder what sort of technology might emerge to further absorb collision forces.
