For nearly 30 years, "play ball" on an early-May Friday night in Elgin has signaled the start of another softball season for my Dad's city softball team. Friday night, May 11, was no different. Unfortunately, Dad's team lost 20-5. Elgin Ind/Jake's Pizza started off well enough ... scoring 3 runs after 2 were out in the bottom of the 1st. But, a 6-run 4th and an 11-run 5th for the visitors wiped that away.

Meanwhile, for the last few years, "play ball" on an early-May Tuesday night in Elgin has meant the start of the softball season for my brother-in-law's co-ed team. Tuesday night, May 8, they started the season with a 16-1 win. Tempco scored 2 in the 1st, 3 in the 3rd on an inside-the-park HR, 7 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th.

I love baseball ... and I love softball just as much [at least in softball, errors aren't tabulated and broadcast to the world every day]. I love keeping the runs by inning, and sometimes, I'll do a little "play by play" in the stands.

Anyone else either play softball or have a "team to watch" during the spring/summer/fall months or just enjoy keeping all sorts of statistics?

Ahhh...yes! Minor League Baseball!

In our area, we have the Kane County Cougars ... and Schaumburg Flyers (though, not sure if they are still in existance).

I have also attended a few games of the Jackson (TN) DiamondJaxx!

TOURNAMENT CHAMPS!

After finishing the season 10-5, securing 2nd place, my bro-in-law's team won 2 games in the playoffs Tuesday night (8/28/07) to grab the tournament championship trophy!

They won the first game over the 3rd place team, 4-3, with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Then, in the tournament's third game, against the 1st place team (which nearly slaughtered the 4th place team in the second game of the evening), they scored 1 run in the top of the 8th (an extra inning) to win 11-10. It was a see-saw type of battle, too, and they beat the team that had beaten them 3 times during the regular season, with scores of 9-6, 9-8 and 9-8.

Unfortunately, Dad's team didn't fare as well, ending the season at 2-12....

I used to play softball, but I stopped a few years ago because I had other issues going on at the time. I'd like to get back to it. It's great exercise.

My team during the summer is mostly watched on the DirecTV MLB channels.

I see you are from Elgin, I think that watching softball would be more fun than the Bingo raffle at the Mile Pale. What a joke that was!

You mean the Milk Pail Restaurant, right? Along Rt 25?

Not sure if they still do the Bingo there or not....... I take it you used to live in the area?

My previous company when it was small had a company softball team..I played on it two years...great fun.

Heh ... that's how Dad got started in softball. Union 76/Unocal 76, when they had offices in Schaumburg IL, had lots of land (now all strip mall type stuff) with several softball fields and other various sports fields. I remember Mom would drive us kids into Schaumburg on the afternoons that Dad had games.... Seems like a lifetime ago....

Yeah, along Rt 25. They still do bingo, but they call it raffle. I was up there about a month ago visiting family that lives in Campton Hills (Elburn). That place does have good fish on Fridays though.

Ah yes ... I'm familiar with Elburn.

Too bad I didn't know you were here ... would've been neat to meet you. If you are ever in the area again, be sure to let me know, if you want.

I will let you know Knightfan. I am planning on moving to that area in a few years. I love it out there.

Are you familiar with Beith Rd?

Posted (edited)

I have spent a good part of my life living in Calgary, AB and now Montana. Cold winters don't bother me one iota.

Beith Rd is just north of where IL 38 and IL 47 intersect in Elburn, just north of the new Jewel Osco. Thats where I stay when I come visit.

Ahhhh! I know EXACTLY where that is! Not all that far from me, really. I just haven't been down that way this year....

When I am up there I frequent the Giordano's Pizza in S. Elgin off Randall Rd. I love me some Giordanos. The best pizza on the planet.

Ohhh my goodness. I know that place :).

BUT ... you should try the pizza at the place (can't remember the name right now) at Randall Rd and Bose Rd in Elgin ... right across from Menards. Good stuff :).
