Do they have to be new?

that was the angle but you don't have to stick to it if you don't want to.

thanks for the reminder on the CRV, Rondo and Camry as ugly stick cars.

How did I forget those?

I'll add the galant and new Lancer to the good list.

I can't think of ten that I like, however, I did drive a Datsun 300ZX a very long time ago and liked it a lot -cool dashboard electronics.

The current Murano is very nice.

I like the Mazda 7 & 9

Nothing else comes to mind......the Altima is okay. There are a few very good designs, but I honestly don't pay much attention to them.

I don't know if I feel better or worse about my Sanity.

I like:

Orig 240 and 510, the old Datsun Roadsters, The first, second and third gen Miata, The first and second gen RX-7, the First/Second gen xB, the Prius, and the RX-8. I can handle the EVO and the WRX-STI, they are kinds like the xB and Prius-so ugly I almost like them.

NSX is hot too.

However, I basically hate the rest of the cars mentioned. TL, 350Z, altima, TSX, Maxima, G35, M45, the whole Lexus thing, every Camry built, 08 Impreza, the new Lancer, anything by the Koreans, etc.

Maybe I am not as much of a raving Japanese/Asian car fan as I had thought.

i gotta admit. toyota did a great styling job on the IS. It has an aggressive stance and broad shouldered look and proportions that are extremely rare for a japanese brand car.

rear view is really nice. grille could be better though.

you can leave the new accord off the 'best' list.....LOL!

Maybe the sedan... but the coupe looks like it's going to be pretty nice. Same with the upcoming RWD Hyundai Tiburon. Both might have to be inserted onto my list once they debut. :P

Eh... The current IS doesn't impress me. The original on the other hand... Perfection.

the new accord coupe is alright. i could see why some might put it on a favorites list. it does not belong on the hate list.

I liked the old IS but I think this new one has a lot more presence to it. It kinda makes the new 3 series and all new C class look a bit cheap, at times.

They're not all that impressive either. :P

In fact... Except for the CTS and G35 sedan (the new coupe pales in comparison to the original), All the previous generation vehicles in this class are better looking. The IS has odd details and proportions, the 3er has odd Bangled details, while the C-class lost it's class and originality.

Actually, I like the Caddy CTS MUCH better. Much more masculine, much better looking car.

Hmm... I'll see what I can come up with. I'll go with current models and very recent models (built within 2 years) to simplify things. Otherwise the Worst list would include a lot more models.

Top 10 Best

1. Acura TL

2. Mazda 3

3. Lexus IS

4. Acura TSX

5. Infiniti G35 Coupe (previous version. haven't looked at the current one yet.)

6. Infiniti M35/45

7. Mitsubishi Eclipse

Hmm, running out of ideas... Oh, you didn't specify Japanese.

8. Hyundai Sonata

Okay. I'm not a fan of the following designs, but I need to finish my list.

9. Nissan 350Z

10. Scion tC

Top 10 Worst

This is much easier, though difficult to put in proper order. The following is an approximation.

1. Scion xA

2. Toyota Prius

3. Honda Ridgeline

4. Toyota Yaris (Sedan and Hatch get to have a tie)

5. Honda Element

6. Scion xB

7. Nissan Titan/Armada

8. Toyota Avalon

9. Nissan Quest

10. Nissan Versa Sedan

Honorable mentions...

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Honda Civic Sedan

Toyota Camry

Isuzu Ascender

Mitsubishi Diamante (in its last iteration)

Edit: Changes...

- Forgot about pick-up trucks. Nissan Armada/Titan slips in at #7. Honda Ridgeline at #3.

- I decided that the xA is in fact the worst looking car in the US. Forgot about it previously, because they're not all that common.

- On second thought, the pre-bodycolor Element is uglier than the xB, and will continue to taint the appearance of our roads for years to come. They swap positions.

- I decided I like the Eclipse better than the Sonata (also, just picked one up in NFS:Most Wanted, and it's quite the contender). They swap positions.

- The Lexus IS looks pretty good, but I think I prefer the TSX. They swap positions.

- The models that were knocked off the Worst list still get an honorable mention. Also added a couple more chokers to that list.

- I've expanded the list to include recently built models, as there are a few on this list that may have gone out of production.

Best:

Original 240/260 Z cars

NSX

Some recent Acuras

Original Xterra

Current Infiniti coupe

EDIT: Add the current Maxima to the positive column

The rest would just be a pissing contest for the remaining spots.

Worst:

Lexus Hardtop convertible

Toyota Echo

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Toyota Prius

Toyota Camry

Toyota Tundra

Toyota Avalon

All of Scion

Honda Ridgeline

Honda Insight

I could add many more to the list, but these offend my eyes most these days.

I saw one of those with Spanish plates here in Lisbon. It's every bit as ugly IRL as it is in pictures!

Here's the deal BV, asian design has never appealed to me at all - so even the "positives" I listed wouldn't ever progress to "buyable" status. To date the asians have never built a car I would want. It's just a matter of taste, the Europeans have my interest and have built plenty of cars I would consider. I know its hard for someone of your vintage to see how I don't find all things asian appealing, but that's really all there is to it. I just don't like them.

Posted

Well, I understand all that... but it was a harmless jab, hence why I just said to lighten up. I've gotten far worse than that, you know. :P

I know.

NBD.

But the Japanese suck!

Posted

From my "positives" list, I feel that one car would make a great example here.

The Acura TL.

It made the list because of some details which I find very appealing while the whole car kind of turns me off. I know that sounds weird but let me try to explain. The TL has an attractive nose and tail mostly due to a very pleasing and restrained design in the lighting, the lights are subtle with clean, crisp edges and a pleasing shape. They don't suffer from the tumour-like designs that have become so common lately. They are just the right size and don't sport that hideous chrome look the creatively -impared have been using ad nauseum in recent years.

Then there are the TL's body creases and lines, they are sharp and crisp and purposeful in a world of soft, flabby, and indistinct lines on too many new cars. I love them.

However, (you knew this was coming) the overall configuration and shape of the car is boredom incarnate. They got the details so right, but the big picture falls very short. I'd love to see those lights and lines gracing a sleek and slippery body shape. Imagine a hardtop coupe or sedan a la CLS with those fine Acura details draped over it.

Now somebody sketch it for me! :AH-HA_wink:

I know this is an old thread, but I wasn't here when this was up, so.

Best 10:

1. Protomotors Spirra

2. Hyundai Pony '74 (Not really pretty, but it IS an antique)

3. Daewoo Prince of the 90's

4. Kia Soul, if concepts count as well

5. Proton Saga(I know, reskined Mirage but, hey, it's Asian)

6. Ssangyong Chairman(True, it's a re-worked Mercedes, but built in Korea)

7. Ssangyong Musso SUT

8. Ssangyong Korando(the one they ALMOST exported to US if they hadn't been sued by Chrysler)

9. ?

10. ?

Worst 10:

All the Japanese. (No offense, I just don't like them, not even a single one)
