Jan. 2007 Sales: Ford Motor Company

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 1 - Ford Motor Company's January U.S. sales declined 19 percent compared with a year ago, largely as a result of a planned reduction in sales to daily rental companies. Sales to daily rental companies were cut by 65 percent.

“All of us at Ford are focused on restructuring our business to be profitable at lower volumes and offering more of the products people want, including more cars and more crossovers,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s President of The Americas. “We are focusing more of our attention on retail customers and reducing sales to daily rental companies sharply. Our customers benefit from this plan because their vehicles’ residual values will improve – a trend we already are seeing with our newest products.”

The resale values of Ford’s newest products have improved by as much as 11 percentage points – with Ford closing the gap on many Asian competitors – according to the Automotive Leasing Guide. Residual values have improved 2 percentage points compared with the prior model year for the 2007 Ford Fusion sedan, 6 points better for the 2007 Lincoln Navigator, 9 points better for the 2007 Ford Expedition and 11 points better for the 2008 Ford Escape. Ford’s new 2007 Edge crossover has resale values higher than Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano.

January marked the first full month on sale for the company's new crossover utilities – the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. Edge sales were 5,586 and MKX sales were 1,699. In fact, the Edge post higher sales in its introduction month than did Ford's popular Fusion in its first month (4,078 in October 2005).

Dealers reported higher retail sales for the company's 2007 model mid-size cars, the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKZ. In addition, the all-new Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator full-size SUVs extended their winning streaks into 2007. Expedition sales have been higher than a year ago for five months in a row and Navigator sales have been up the last four months.

The Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner utility vehicles posted sharply higher retail sales in advance of a new 2008 model, which now is being shipped to dealers from Ford's Kansas City (Mo.) Assembly Plant.

Ford saw lower sales for its popular F-Series pickup truck in January (down 15 percent), which compares with a strong performance for America's best-selling pickup last year. The company expects softness in new home construction to adversely affect full-size pickup sales through the first half of 2007.

The Edge is doing well, and the MKX looks like it's doing okay too, surprisingly. Nothing else looks too bright for Ford, though. I wonder if the Silverado will beat the F-Series in sales this month. 45k is a rather low total.

Edge is doing better than I expected out of the gate.

Wow, the 500 and FS have sure went to the toilet big time. That's what happens when you don't finish the product.

Good thing I leased. I won't have to be the lamb for the huge resale hit when I turn it in.

Can someone explain to me why everyone laudes Volvo when they seem to not be able to sell anything consistantly?

And, wow, more Crown Vics sold than Five Hundreds. Gentleman, visit a Ford dealership and ask to see a 2007 Crown Victoria. You'll find one...maybe. That is how sad this is.

True, but go to a police station or rental lot, and see how many Crown Vics are there. The Silverado ended up falling just short of outselling the F-150, and I'm guessing there still isn't a good selection on lots.

And that's my point. A car sold ~80% exclusively for government use vastly outsells the retail car deisgned to replace it in the civilian market.

I don't check Ford's sales usually, everytime I do I'm reminded of how terrible they are doing. From the first lines in the press release, it is easy to see what message they are getting across going forward--in it for the long haul even if it means sacrificing our position now. Edge seems to be doing well, but at what cost? Explorer went from an already paltry 12k to 8k, compare that to the glory days of 30k+ units/monthly...

It's interesting to note that the Milan outsold the MKZ, even though they share the same showrooms. Also, Mariner did pretty well too. I certainly see the hybrids running around LA regularly...

Tanking Explorer sales, is #1 reason and cutting Hertz orders too.

Also, alot of car [non truck] buyers shifted to Camry/Accord/Sonata/Altima. What hurt Taurus/Windstar was the shoddy head gaskets, trannys, and Fords "Who cares, people should buy big SUV's anyway" attitude.

Posted

They sold 7 Freelanders in 2006

The GT sold more than that.

The Mariner and Millan are doing well...although the MKZ is actually down despite upgrades...maybe cuz of the name change? :scratchchin:

One of my favorite posters (grbeck) on Blue Oval Forums said that nothing has hurt Ford more than the head gasket failure of the 3.8L V6. Hundreds of thousands gave up on Ford for good and switched to the Japanese thanks to all of the Taurus, Sables, Windstars, Continentals, Mustangs, Thunderbirds, and Cougars with that engine.

I just don't see how Ford can be around 5 years from now if things continue like this.

yes, i would agree. i still remember a coworkers windstar debacle from about 10 years ago. they bought a new windstar for a vacation trip. the thing went south on vacation. big time ruined their vacation. customers don't forget that stuff.

i know many who had problems with that engine. ah, Our business leaders did not go to bat and try to serve the customer on that one. it's their fault.

I think I have seen more new Expeditions than new Suburbans in my area. I think the Expy looks better but the Suburban has a nicer interior.

I'd like to own a Jaguar someday, too, Ven. It's funny and scary at the same time: the Reedman-Toll Auto World (one of the largest dealerships in the world, I believe) is right down the street from where I live. They recently renovated all of the showrooms, one for each seperate brand. The Jaguar showroom looked beautiful, you could see the Jags through the wall of windows as you drove past. Last week I drove past and there was a bunch of Chevrolets inside. I have no clue what happened but, considering the dealership, it doesn't bode well for the brand.

The ALG resid for the 2006 500 is in the 32% range after 4 years.

Did you get some kind of great initial deal? Otherwise I would say you are already paying for it every month as it has been factored into your payments.

Perhaps you have already been slaughtered and you don't know it yet? :AH-HA_wink:

my lease term was 51% residual after 3 years.

I know the attitude was that is you had problems with smaller cars or engines, dealers would say "Well you shoulda bought a V8 big car/truck". No wonder buyuers flock to imports. And then they thought "imports are a fad, and only hippies buy them in California".

Posted

Well I guess that explains a few thousand of the $12 Billion loss!

oh i ain't complaining about that at all. at the same time I'd gladly fork over a bit more dought for 60 more ponies and no noise in the cabin. stuff like that is ultimately why ford is losing $$$$$$. half assing product.
