Little towns or quiet hideaways you escape to?

There is a little town in North Central California that I find really quaint. That would be Chico. About 3x a year, I'll grab a rental car and go there to do...well...nothing. I'll go to B&N, Starbucks, a movie, to eat (they've got some good little restaurants)....and sleep.

Any towns, lonely beaches or rural places you retreat to?

yea i frequent deadwood, sd quite often nice place and such but man the people who live there are just hillbillies...

but seriously i like to go hiking to white rocks and other geographic landmarks in the deadwood area and just sit there and think through the problems of the world, what the square root of 2 is to a thousand places and stuff like that

My sister's place in Summerville, SC. Very nice (reasonably inexpensive, too) and it's a ~10-15 minute drive SE into Charleston. My cousins' place in Summerdale, PA would qualify if I-81 didn't run right in front of their front yard.

Edit: I forgot our vacation to Bar Harbor, ME a few summers ago. Haven't been there since, but that was the quietest place I've ever been to. Nice scenery, too.

Bobby, I don't think you got my "joke". Cupid.com is a dating site. Ehhh... nevermind.

Assateague is nice, too bad it's 3.5 hours away since I moved back to PA.

The campground in Lehighton, PA is nice.

There were a myriad quiet places to retreat to on the farm, growing up. I'd love to have a private, sloped lot backing to woods and a creek to build a house on.

....well, if I told you about my private little spot, it wouldn't be private, would it? Just kidding!

I know some great old abandoned mining roads in Northern Ontario, in the Kirkland Lake area. Great canoeing, fishing (although fishing is the SECOND most boring sport on the planet, IMO). There is also a chain of islands in Georgian Bay, just a little north-west of Parry Sound that are secluded, mosquito free, absolutely stunningly beautiful - incredible sunsets. The best part about both these places is they are FREE. No park wardens, no camping fees, no kids...very peaceful!

I live in a town with a population of approx 2600. We leave the quite and beauty to go to the big city for entertainment and work.

Really though, a 1 minute drive puts me on a dirt road by wineries and such. No need to leave home to "get away".

Close: My father-in-law's 22-ish acres about 40 miles south of here.

Far: My aunt and uncles house in Beaufort, S.C. (if you've ever been to Parris Island, or know where it is, you know where Beaufort is), fairly reasonable house right on the water, good fishing, good swimming, good boating, just all around good place to spend those lazy summer days (favorite family summer vacation spot).
