2008 Pontiac G6 GXP


Press Release


The new, 2008 G6 GXP performance coupe and sedan bring a new, performance-oriented dimension to the G6's broad lineup. They will be available with both base and Street edition packages.

G6 GXP Street edition models are easily identified by their new front fascia, which features new fog lamps and braided polished stainless steel upper and outboard lower grille inserts with chrome surrounds on the upper grille sections leading to a revised hood with scoops. New body side rocker moldings lead to a redesigned rear fascia with two exhaust openings. Chrome, dual-wall tips exit through the openings. A rear spoiler also is part of the GXP package, but is specific to either the coupe or sedan; the coupe model receives a larger, more aggressive "hammerhead" spoiler. GXP-specific 18-inch wheels are also standard in the Street edition package.

All G6 GXP models are powered by GM Powertrain's 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing. It is rated at 252 horsepower (188 kW) at 6300 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque (341 Nm) at 3200 rpm. The engine is a state-of-the-art, DOHC powerplant that uses full four-cam phasing, rapid date processing and torque-based engine management to optimize power, economy and emissions performance.

The 3.6-liter V-6 VVT engine is mated to a new Hydra-Matic 6T70 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission. It is an advanced transmission with state-of-the-art clutch-to-clutch shift operation, designed for high-performance front-wheel drive applications. Clutch-to-clutch operation allows for reduced complexity and compact packaging. The six-speed automatic improves vehicle performance up to 8 percent and increases fuel economy up to 4 percent over current front-wheel-drive four-speed automatics.

G6 GXP models have sporty, driver-oriented interiors with refined controls and instrument layouts. Standard features include highly bolstered, body-hugging seats, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, racing-style gauges with true-red LED instrument backlighting, automatic climate control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, AM/FM/CD player, variable intermittent wipers, tachometer and theft-deterrent system. Available items include power adjustable pedals, six-way power seats, heated seats, leather seating surfaces, in-dash six-CD changers and remote vehicle start. GXP-specific leather-appointed seating with two-tone inserts is available.

On the road, the G6 GXP coupe and sedan deliver the type of responsive ride and handling characteristics expected from Pontiac 's performance series. They are equipped with GXP-specific sport-tuned suspensions, as well as GM's StabiliTrak electronic stability control system as standard equipment.

The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut design, with aluminum lower control arms and a direct-acting stabilizer bar. Suspension components mount to a U-shaped hydroformed chassis cradle. Rubber mounts isolate the body from the chassis cradle to minimize noise, vibration and harshness. At the rear, a four-link independent suspension design uses twin-tube shock absorbers and another direct acting stabilizer bar, all intended to minimize body roll during cornering. High-performance braking is an integral part of the G6's sporty nature. Large, heavy-duty four-wheel disc brakes provide excellent stopping power and great fade resistance. Front discs are vented and the rears are solid. Four-channel ABS is standard.

Base G6 GXP models receive standard 18-inch aluminum alloy painted flangeless five-spoke wheels, while those opting for the Street edition will receive a unique 18-inch wheel. Black chrome-finished 18-inch aluminum wheels are also available.

Umm, what the hell were they thinking? That wing is ridiculous (is the rearview mirror even useable with that thing?) and the front, while not terrible, needs work.

It amazes me how GM can put out such good looking vehicles and at the same time put out bad looking ones.

looks "the same" as the gxp they showed last year, just instead of an awesome 3.9L it's a 3.6L w/ an auto now.

Oh, cool. They offer a version for people with taste and without. I'm so glad the hot engine and other features are available without the totally stoopid wing. I... actually like the front, but the rear end, with that hideous wing and those unattractive strakes in the bumper... SUCKS. Edited by ocnblu

I have always liked Pontiac's style but this is just too much for me. Spoilers and hood scopes can look good when done tastefully, but they look terrible on this car. If the spoiler was smaller, the grille not as long, and the scopes not so huge, I think the car would look much better. The spoiler is WAY too high and the whole car just looks tacky to me. The only thing I do like is the 5 spoke rims.

The wing sucks, the buck teeth suck, the rest isn't too bad-kind of reminds me of the last gen Grand Am.

Good to know you can skip on the front fascia and spoiler. I like the hood scoops, wheels, and a few other details.

I see...this is all a big plan. By making something so outrageously tacky, ugly, ricey, and anti-Pontiac, GM's setting things up so that we'll gladly accept the Holden-based GP replacement next month at Chicago. Brilliant move!

Maybe Pontiac was stung by the reception of the subtle GTO and are applying some retro like their '70s and '90s styling themes...the '70 GTO Judge with it's wing and hood scoops and '70s Trans Ams weren't exactly subtle, nor were the '90s T/As and Grand Ams...

I had the exact same reaction as Captainbooyah there. Read the press release thought "Oh, sounds pretty cool" then saw that horrible buck-toothed airplane winged of a car and cried a little on the inside. Seriously, the G6 GT looks better than this. Hood scoops don't do anything for me either, they just remind me of the thousands of modifed cars out there with non-painted scoops running around as if they're some type of hotshot.

...and for the record, I didn't like the hood scoops on the refreshed GTO either.

Wow, that thing is hideous. GM took a nice looking, modern design and stepped back a decade to make a Grand Am clone. It represents everything I hate about Pontiac over the past decade. Unbelievably stupid.

And why in the HELL aren't there any 5- or 6-speed true-manual trannies in any of these GXP cars?!?! Back in 91-93, you could get a 3.4L DOHC Grand Prix GTP w/ a 5-speed manual, but it was dropped for 94 and beyond- this is progress? :banghead: If it's so performance-oriented, make a decent freakin' manual trans an extra-cost option, I'd pay it. Or do they even HAVE a manual they could use? That's one of the reasons they dropped the GTP's manual, too many warranty-covered failures.

The front is a bit overdone, the rear wing is going to get destroyed by the rags (And rightfully so, it's about the most tacky thing I've seen in a LONG time.) Those certainly aren't GXP specific wheels, and if they are GM should do a better job of differentiating them. Where is the stick?!?!?! Why use hood scoops if they aren't functional? (Especially with a division that is known for Ram Air) Why is the badge tack-i-ly (:)) placed in the center of the door?

I can see Pontiac's new found credibility (Solstice, GTO, Other G6 variants) taking a few hits with especially this car and the new Torrent "GXP". Oh well, hopefully the future holds a better Pontiac line up for those of us who truly know what the division is about.

See- I would think this would target the scion/ricer quite effectively. It's not what I would like to see Pontiac offer, but scion and the like isn't what I'd like to see toyota offer, either. Kids are still buying big wings...

Maybe...of course, big wings on cars aimed at the youth market are nothing new to Pontiac...how about what they offered in '70?

(I'll admit to being a total modernist on most all things automotive, but those oldies sure have great style, IMHO).

Moltar- I don't get your beef with the '70 GTO- while the Judge wing was a bit large- at least it was on a 17-foot long car and you couldn't see it from the front... but the '68-70 GTO hood scoops were among the smallest ever put on a performance car- intake area has to be 1/3rd of the GXP's; again: on a near full-size car. Not to mention, the Judge was quite uncommon relative to standard GTOs.

I really do not see any correlation... not even the second time you mentioned it.

Maybe Pontiac was stung by the reception of the subtle GTO and are applying some retro like their '70s and '90s styling themes...the '70 GTO Judge with it's wing and hood scoops and '70s Trans Ams weren't exactly subtle, nor were the '90s T/As and Grand Ams...

...No, again.

This doesn't even compare to those. This is just hideous. Thanks to the styling and the spoiler, it's extremely tacky. It is alot different than cladding or typical Muscle Car touches. Those were actually good looking vehicles, IMO, and were let down by the cladding. This... This doesnt have any cladding to let it down. It's just poor looking by itself. Pitiful.

Oh, cool. They offer a version for people with taste and without. I'm so glad the hot engine and other features are available without the totally stoopid wing. I... actually like the front, but the rear end, with that hideous wing and those unattractive strakes in the bumper... SUCKS.

Agreed, the wing is deplorable and whatever nutcase in the think-tanks at GM thought that up should either be shot or locked up in Arkham Asylum with the Joker (maybe he'd appreciate the sight!)

You misinterpreted my posts...I like the '70 GTO and it's wing....my point was for Pontiac to put scoops and a big wing on the G6 is consistent with what they have done in the past...that's all. It's nothing new for Pontiac to do flashy styling...look at the '70 Judge, the late '70s Trans Ams, the '90s Trans Ams and Grand Ams, etc...the G6 GXP is another interation of the flashy side of Pontiac....
