I heard on speed channels test drive that the only reason the sierra has the 4 speed is because of the lack of enough 6 speeds. Once GM ramps up more production it will be in the sierra. They will definitely put it in the sierra before the new Toyota truck comes out since that truck is rumored to be getting 400bhp and a 6 speed.

Providing that the Toyota six-speed doesn't miss a couple cogs on the upshift. :AH-HA_wink:

For what it's worth, Motor Trend reports that next year everything with the 5.3 and above gets the 6-speed.

Should be correct. Even if you read some brochure with snippets from GM planning & engineering people, they almost apologize for the 4-spd, but say it's simply a fill-in before they can get full production capacity on the 6spd. They also say how much better they can tune everything with the 6, etc.--they just weren't enough in time, so the 4-spd got a very quick tuning job, and that was it.

The good news? The 6-spd will be across the board shortly.

The bad news? There's going to be an "odd" first model year which only has the 4-spd, compared to the rest of the model years that have the 6. Kinda strange, but not totally new from GM (i.e., like the TBI 350 in the Fleetwood vs. LT1, 3.8L in the Intrigue vs. 3.5L, older 3.2L vs. 3.6L in CTS, etc., etc.).

It shall be interesting to see, especially down the line in a few years how it affects used demand.

Much like the 1999 and early 2000 Sierra and Silverados that only came with 1 rear door in the extended cab models. My 2000 Sierra has the "optional" 4th door in the extended cab...

It should have had it in the first place, but thats just me.

I totally understand you buddy. But for GMT 900's which include the trucks and the SUVs which total to about 1.5 million vehicles every year. That is a lot of tooling and modification of processes required.

Production is not controlled by a tinker bell whose majic wand will create six speeds right off the bat.

Moreover for pickups you "want" a six speed but you do not "need" it.

Supply and demand issues, I get it, but I just hate the abuse GM always gets from the media about how ancient the 4speeds are and how they should have introduced them in the first place with these transmissions, and this how the imports always have the upper hand, etc....etc.

That is their job, they just dont say bad things about the companies who give them the most advertising dollars. <cough cough>

I drove a new gen Sierra last night, a black SLT Crew Cab Z-71. Nice truck. The transmission is smooth and its a very quiet truck. I hope to see the 6-speed soon to improve mileage mostly. Will trade the AV in for another one with a 6speed just for the mileage improvement.
