Pontiac Fiero $800

I was wondering if I should go ahead into looking at a 1986 Pontiac Fiero 2M4 that is for sale in Orangeville. I spotted it on Craigslist. The car is an 86 w/ 80,000 kms. It needs a front bumper, brake work, and a new battery. What do you guys think? Are these cars potential problems. I have heard of many breaking down frequently. Would this be worth it ot just be a money pit? I dont think I would want to drive this in the winter so that is something that would turn me away. What do you think?

Of all the engine fire jokes we make, in reality that issue was confined mainly to the 1984 model year and it was usually people revving the $h! out of the engines. I think these things redlined at 5000RPM, which is not real rev-worthy if you ask any ricer. Also, the valve covers were notoriously leaky and the oil pan was rather small (3qts?). This thing was meant as a cheap econobox but looked like a cheap sports car and you don't have to look at too many Sephias and Probes to realize both demographics don't put 'maintenance' as a priority.

Actually, I believe after the first year the oil pans were changed to accomodate 4 qts of oil, but I could be wrong.

I'd stay away from an 86 2M4. For one, the Iron Duke really is a POS engine. unrefined, the car was notorious for leaks. Blech. I also don't think the base model is that much of a looker. The suspension on that fiero will also leave something to be desired. And having to already have to do the brakes--yuck.

I think a fiero needing work already and an un-desirable basemodel is not worth 800 bucks. Maybe 500, but not 800. Hell, I had picked up a running Indy Fiero for $500 that needed some work.

Do it! Fieros are still cool... they're still the only PORDUCTION

car from GM ever with a mid-engined setup.
