If my parents give in I may have my own car. Its a Buick Regal Limited with the 3800 V6. It is a two-door as well and I think it may be a 1991 or 92. I am checking out the price tomorrow or sometime this week. It is in terrible condition but since I cant drive, I will spend time trying to fix it up. I have pics as well. The interior is leather but the front bench seat is torn badly and the body is alright. The car has rust but it isn't too bad but it is more then I would like. When I go back I will check out the price and if it runs. I also will have to find a way to get it home. Anything I should watch out for? This car also has an analog speedometer not digital. Here are the pics. Sorry for the bluriness.

uh when your in photobucket above the image there is some thing that says edit click that the go down to where it says resize and set it to 50%. you might have to do it twice to get the pics to 800x600.

I will host resized ones if you want me too since its hard to look at the car when you have to scroll.

but those cars are pretty cool!!

why's it so blurry? out of focus or.....?

prolly the engine is solid.... check the fluids though

all the help i can be

Dude, save your money for something better...If the exterior and interior look as bad as that....I can only imagine what the mechanicals are like....Do your self a favor and save your parents some grief and pass up on this rolling wreck.

I'm with Casket on this one. Sorry, but I'd wait until something that's newer and not rusty comes up.

If there's two things life has taught me, it's these... patience is it's own virtue, and good things come to those who wait.

Yeah, I know getting your own wheels sounds awesome and feels great... until you find your ride going to hell. And with that rust, the salty Ontario winter roads will wreak tons of havoc...

Hell, wait a while and you may be driving a Charger in due time. ^_^

If it's all you can get, and it's dirt cheap, take it. If your parents (and you, too) are willing to wait and find something worth buying, do things that way.

Heck, get a two-door Blazer. If it's in the same shape as that Regal and you want to modify it, I'll send a few parts from my S-10 your way. :D

Save up and wait for something better to come along.

A relatively newer car that's that rusted out will likely be nothing but trouble.

If it's that cheap and mechanically sound, it would be worth it. But I wouldn't put much money in it other than fixing the seat.

Two-hundred bucks? Hell, go for it. If it breaks down, take it apart and rebuild it just for the thrill of it.

You feel more proud when you buy a crap car and fix it up yourself. . .

Ahem. . .you're forgetting the state my S-10 is in (although it was free). :D

What do you have planned for the Regal if you get it?

I would Agree. but a GMC Typhoon (sp) would be better.

Go for it man. just make sure you like grease and have a Tetinitous (sp) shot before you start working.

All I am going to do is see if I can fix the seats or put a seat cover over them. I may also try to do something with the rust. The rust hasn't rusted through the body totally. I also want to make sure it runs well and usually the 3800s do. Parts are everywhere for that engine. I may want to replace the radio but that isn't necessary til later. One of the fog lights also needs to be replaced. I'll see what is wrong with it tomorrow. The guy who owns the dealer is great and he knows what is wrong. He sold us our Tahoe and he is very negotiable. In the case probably even more. BTW, if anyone can resize the pics. I did try to resize them but I clicked the wrong one. I clicked 75% thinking it was 25%.

I've never known a dealership to sell anything for $200... can be the oldest, crappiest pile & they'll want a grand for it, especially if it runs ok. *shrug* Good luck. If this doesn't work out, start watching the classifieds in the newspaper instead of looking at dealerships. $200 dealership cars generall aren't worth the cost to haul to the salvage yard.

Its loading too slow, and pic too blurry to see this rust well, but are those rockers about shot ? If so, forget it, rockers are a main part of the structure, but is also a tell tale of down under. A brake/fuel line job will cost you roughly $1000, then you might need a tank $$$$. Not many people have what it takes to do brake and fuel lines by themselves.

I wont buy a car with any damage to the interior, its just so gross.

Seems to me you'd be better off spending a few hundred more and finding a better Regal. THey are an excellent car.

I dont think this is a 91, I believe all 91 Limiteds are supposed to have clear tailights. Mine did, but the origional owners told me they did have to send it back to the dealers becasue it came without the "proper" tailights. No matter, just some triv.

Mine was dark metalic blue w/blue plush interior, quite a looker and very comfortable and solid. It did come from origional buyer, who was a woman, and drove all interstate, to and from work. I couldnt believe it had 214,000 miles on it, it was so tight. I did have to do lines & tank after about 1 year but they actually rusted inside  . Never saw that before. I paid $1000 for the car back in 02, I could actually still be driving it if I hadnt had a "brain storm".

I always prefer to spend some time and look around, if a car sells out from under you while your doing so "it were'nt meant to be"

Good luck and take you time, thats how you find the best car.

I have seen a dealer do it before. This will be under $500 for sure though if not $200. It may not be a 91 but I'm not sure. I am going to do an inspection tomorrow. There was a 92 Regal 4-door Gran Sport at the dealer beside but it was $2800 with about 200,000 kilometres. I saw an exact one somewhere else for $2400 and it had 99,000 kilometres.

Google Image search "GMC Typhoon II." :AH-HA_wink:

If the images were available in their original size and not the Google thumbnail size, I'd add them to my thread on the GMC SyTy trucks.

Check into a new paintjob, too, for the future.

Heck, lower the car a bit, remove the red trim, add some nice rims and you'd have a slick car. 8)

This is the best advice I have ever received. There is no telling what would be in my driveway today if I hadn't listened to that advice.

UPDATE, the Regal is dead. Crush my hopes. It has 350,000 kms on it and they are sending it to the crusher. I am now going to try to get the Cherokee there but they want me to wait and get something newer. I want an older vehicle to fix up and my teacher recommended I do so. Cherokees stand up better in the winter anyways and this one has less kms and less rust. I want to try before it gets sent off. It was a trade-in so it is going to a dealer auction. I is still in good shape and a good runner.

Well theres your answer why it was so cheap, no dealership I know would price a car cheap like that if it actually ran. They are all in for the money but its fun to mess around with those used car dealerships salesman. I love how they claim it has passed an 100 point safety inspection and you look at the brake rotors and they are all torn up and there is no brake pad left. Gotta love it, anything to make a buck.

Cherokees dont do as well as you think. Pushed lots of them out of snow banks. had to push them of some randome guys lawn. mostly caused by some Cockyness jeep drivers get when they drive them. I know some truck drivers and at night in the winter he always has seen "them damn jeeps spinning out of control".

Wait for a wrangler if you want to go the jeep way.

and Wait for a better car. trust me spendiing countless hours under a hood is generaly no fun. Sure before On paper you get all geeked buy the parts tear the car apart. call some buddies up to help. then its 6 weeks later. your beating the car with an adjustable wrench. have 5 books on the car you borrowed from the library. Have too many rust cruds in your eyes from doing underbody work. then you get it all together and 5 miles down the road that one part you thought you didnt need to replace fails.

If i were you i would wait for a car that you know can drive around perfectly with no work or minor work. and then you replace the things on it one at a time. Mostly stuff like, hey the steering pump looks bad why dont i get one from the scrapyard or buy a new one and put it on to figure out how it all works.

Set a price limit and write down some basic specs and go from there.

This Jeep is pretty good though. It is running strong and has little rust. It is a 91 and has 217kms on it. The Regal had 350kms. I also saw them driving it. It was a trade-in and I saw it all around town before. They aren't the best in winter but I may not drive in the winter here. I could still take the bus. I really want something of my own before I can drive. Our auto shop is great because if we bring in our cars they can inspect them an so on. Get a temporary permit, drive down to my school and my teacher would check everything. He is a licensed mechanic. I would want the dealer to check it before anyways. I will see how I am. I just don't feel that great lately. I don't know whether it's depression or school or boredom. I have been depressed ever since getting back from Detroit. I haven't really been myself. I haven't drawn in a couple of weeks and I am always getting overly annoyed by my sister. In my house, I don't get as much "My time" as I would like. I want a room in the basement away from everyone else and bright of course but I want a drawing table. I need somewhere quiet where I can draw in quietness and have concentration. I was overly depressed last night that I didn't even fall asleep. Lately everything has pissed me off and I have been kind of staying away from my friends. I end up being in no mood to talk. The only talking I really did was with my auto shop teacher because it was about cars. Cars and art are what I only want to talk about. The situation of the divorce isn't helping as well. I wanted to move in with my aunt but her son which is my cousin is the one that really pissed me off. I don't know what I am going to do. I want a car to work on by myself and have my own time. It is very weird and I hate being like this but I usually always laugh but I dont as much anymore. I actually enjoy fixing cars. That is why I am taking auto shop. I may just see if I could get that Regal for free and just mess around with it. It would be my own time and I would never want to drive that car.

AR, man, I hate to hear that. I really do.

But, sometimes though, time to yourself is just what you need. People rarely are the solution when you know you have to just fix and figure out things for yourself. Try to get some project going and spend some free time on it.

I'd like to say more, but the words escape me here. I've delt with a few of life's aggravations over the recent few years, too. But remember to hang in there and, well, make yourself important, if I'm making any sense here.

Posted

You are making total sense. I may just see how much they want for it so I can fool around with it and practice taking things off and putting them back etc. The whole moving situation is ruining everything. I am depressed, my parents are getting divorced, and my sister won't leave me alone. The reason I dont have my time is because of her. If they would let us take the car for very cheap that would be great but my parents said that they want to be able to move first but noone is buying our house. They would let me if they had moved. Either that or its one of their lame excuses. My sister gets to do something she likes for $35 a lesson. Horseback riding is expensive. She has been doing it every week for about a couple of years so it adds up. They don't spend money on me because I dont like anything else. They don't realize that I could use my time and they tell me to be nice to my sister when she is annoying me badly. Honestly, I want to push her down the stairs. She doesn't understand privacy or alone time.

I wish I could tell you how to handle your sister. But I'm the only kid in the family.

What's the legal age to work in Canada? Try to get a job. :)

Posted

Ok Dude, I don't have a sister, but I have two twin brothers .Our house is big, but privacy and alone time is hard to find.

Whenever I need that, I grab my headphones and go for a jog.

As for your parents not supporting your hobby, maybe get your auto teacher to send a comment sheet or if there's a meet the teacher deal at your school, have him tell them that he thinks getting a beater is a good idea. Experience has shown that parents will listen to the teacher over you. . . <_<

If you really like the Regal, go for a 95. I had a 95. It has the redesigned interior and it came with stock remote entry, a cd/cassette/radio and concert II premium sound, not to mention power everything. It was solid and only cost me 1300. Great car...kinda miss the ole girl

Posted

Well, it's $200 and 3800 powered...?

I'll hold off on the FWD sux comments. Either way good luck. :)

One thing about the jeeps though, they do handle decent with there 4wd in the snow its when you feel like you have full control that you screw up. 4wd is great on snow but not on ice as with any car or truck with 4wd people think o well I'm fine then they hit a patch of ice and bam thats where you lose it because you were going to fast.
