My Build Sheet is Gone

I think this question may have been asked before, and I probably know the answer deep down, but that's not going to stop me from asking anyway.

I lowered the gas tank on the Corvette this weeked, and threw it away because it was rotted beyond repair. To my dismay there was no build sheet shoved between the tank and the body. It's not tucked under the seats or any of the other interior panels (which are out of the car). Is there any way at all to retrieve the option code information given the VIN of the car? My goal is to bring the car as close to original as possible, no matter what the effort, but if I can't do that I'll option it up the way I want to. I'll gladly provide the VIN via PM.

Unfortunately, this isn't possible for Chevrolets like it is for Pontiac. There were negotiations that should have lead to the creation of a PHS style service for Chevy, but the deal fell apart. The VIN and cowl plate will give you some limited info. but full option codes can't be determined from them. Your best bet is to do a ton of research and look for the telltale clues in the equiptment on the car itself.

Bummer about the tank sticker, I wonder if it was a replacement.

that originality is not what it used to be.

If I were you I'd throw on a pair of chromed T.T.IIs on her... paint

the car some cool color (candy apple red? yellow?) and keep the

interior, exterios all original looking with the exception of LED tail

lights & Silverstar Headlights.

Well, I was thinking of putting in hydraulics, tiger-stripe upholstery, and a "La Cucaracha" horn, but on the other hand, not over my dead body.

I do have the trim tag in the driver's side door jamb. The codes show it as having a Silverstone Silver exterior with a gunmetal (dark grey) interior. I'll keep that combo since that aspect of the car is documented. Based on the parts that are in it or came with it, it's definitely a 4spd, 427 car without AC or power windows. If I can't recreate the buld sheet info, I may end up taking a few liberties as to how I option the car up, but still make it look like it came that way from the factory. For example, I'd love to throw a set of red-line tires on it, and I probably should get the heavy-duty braking equipment and power steering...things like that.

Camino, the only thing holding that tank together was the generous coat of undercoating on the outside. I could bitch-slap it and put a hole in it. There also was rotted metal flakes inside of it...lots of them. If it was a replacement, may I never end up buying anything from that company ever. I'm thinking the previous owner just sprayed it to make it look nice

Have you investigated to see if Chevrolet itself can provide a copy of the build sheet? If there were negotiations for a PHS-style service, there would need to be records to negotiate over.

Chevrolet often denies that the records exist, although they do admit that some records are available. You can ask for a package for your car based on the VIN, but usually all they send is generic information for the model year. I did this for a Camaro I once owned. You might have better luck with Corvette information, but it's a longshot.

I'll try to dig up the packet I got for the Camaro,Z. At least it should get you to the right part of Chevrolet. I think they call it Past Models services or something like that.

Z28, you might want to consider putting A/C in the car. I didn't put the SKY's top down on the extremely hot days this summer, rather I relied on the A/C to keep me cool. Baking in the sun & extreme heat is not my idea of a great way to spend a summer day in a convertible. And I learned from the Solstice & SKY forums that those Solstice owners who didn't opt for A/C are now sorry that they didn't.
