Cool find for Metallica fans

As some of you may or may not know, the 1988 album ...And Justice for All has pretty much no bass to it. Two of the most speculated theories are that the band was still broken up about the death of Cliff Burton two years earlier, so they toned the bass down to inaudible levels as a sign of respect for their dearly departed friend. The other theory is that the band was hazing Jason, the new bassist, and to show him that he could never fill Cliff's shoes, they shut him out from the mixing session and toned the bass down. The rest of the band's official explanation is that they wanted a "garage sound."

They were pretty mean to Jason back then...sometimes he would come back to his hotel room after a show to find all his stuff thrown out the window numerous floor down and the beds overturned. They also refused to let him ride with them in the limo, making him find his own transporation to shows.

Anyway, the production of And Justice for All has always been seen as the biggest downside to the album. The drums sound like cardboard boxes, and there's no depth to the songs that bass would give.

But a talented 17 year old kid has recorded bass for six songs off the album and mixed it with the original tracks, also including a bonus song where he flipped the intro to "Blackened" as it was originally played by the band (the band actually reversed the song in the mixing studio, giving it a whole different sound).

I didnt know all this soap opera stuff, Im not a huge fan but I like some of their music. Dont know why, I guess I just more favor the Maiden to Queensryche & Savatage to Megadeth approach better. Why did they have Jason in the band if they felt that way ? Sounds pretty stupid. Justice for All I believe I have and dont really like. Was that the Album they recorded in Woodstock ? They setup weird sound and acoustical barriers, I read something years ago about it. At that time Hetfields riffs were so chunchy and thick he was the sound, even the tonal range he used with the saturation would drown bass technology at that time, you can hear it on many albums of that style from that era, there is no room for bass it just gets covered up. I never understood Kirk either, hes one strange questionable guitarist in one of the most popular Metal bands..............strange ! I think Hetfield is the sound of Metalica and the rest are fillers that cant steal any spotlight, thats my take from a not so much of a fan.

I'm a pretty big 'Tallica fan...but I don't like the direction they took after Justice (and especially after the Black Album).

Jason was a cool guy...the hazing thing only lasted a couple years, but it was still enough to leave him with hard feelings toward the band. I think I read one time that it and other things were the reason he ended up leaving a few years ago. I really don't like the new bassist (Rob Trujillo) either...he just doesn't fit in with the band well.

Part of the reason they "sold out" on the black album was that Bob Rock was the producer (same guy that produced Aerosmith and a bunch of other bands)...Flemming Rasmussen did the first four albums, and RTL and MOP are superior in every way to anything else Metallica has put out. Absolute perfect production and sound.

Personally, I like Kirk's guitar work. He's not the greatest of the greats, but he's pretty good. There are so many epic solos he has done on RTL and MOP....Fade to Black, Ride the Lightning, Sanitarium, Master of Puppets...they're permanantly engrained into my memory because they're so recognizable.

But I gotta agree with Josh...I don't see much happening with the band in the near future. I've heard the new song, and it's basically St. Anger with a guitar solo. James' voice doesn't sound very good these days, and there's nothing that grabs you about their songs anymore.

Metallica is still my favorite band, but Megadeth definitely puts out better albums today. The System Has Failed has some REALLY good stuff on it...much better than anything Metallica has put out in the last 15 years. Dave and the band still has a lot of energy left in 'em. It's a damn shame Metallica can't do the same anymore.

While I love Master of Puppets more than anyother album I'm not one of those

people that hates anything post Black Album. King Nothing & UNforgiven II

were great songs for instance as were some others from the 1990s. What I

want to know is WTF was up with St. Anger. It sucked. I bought it listened to it

twice and then never touched it again. As a matter of fact when I sold my

Blazer I threw my possesions out of the truck into one box fro the liquer store

and that's where St. Anger has been for the past 3 years... under a pile of

gas receipts, a few cans of fix-a-flat/WD-40/brake cleaner & shop towels in

some box from a case of Absolut Vodka in the barn.

I hope Metallica comes back, I'd love to hear some quality stuff from them again.

metallica/gnr was the first concert i went to...giants stadium. someone threw a lighter at axl rose hit him in the balls and he left the show in middle of a song. just left the band and crowd hanging.

a couple weeks later there was riots at another show...metallica went on first and they were pretty damn good....i missed faith no more that night...that would piss me off for a while. they were such an underrated band and mr.bungle there has one of the best voices.... a big influence on my music.....anyway,

metallica was much better while they were drinking. they picked newstead so they obviously like him... les claypool also auditioned.

and justice was the first cd i ever bought...and subsequently the first i lost(but not the last).... their sound became too homogonized after that and kirks playing got way to technical. it always was but much more so in my opinion. i always thought he lacked a certain passion or soul in his playing. very generic.

ive since sold all my metallica cds except master and killem all(i think)...they made their choice and cant say as i blame them.

pretty good find, although i thought the cd was good as is...slightly over produced but not as much as lightning.

IMO, it's MUCH better than New Song #1...lots of melody and Kirk has some pretty cool guitar work in there. The "wooah-ooh-oh" chorus that James is doing is just filler since the lyrics aren't finished yet.

Funny you guys make the GnR comparisons to Metallica. If any of you know the song "Double Talkin' Jive" from GnR's "Use Your Illusions I," it's fun to know that the song is making fun of Metallica.

My opinions on Metallica are pretty straight forward. I don't like them... at all. The way they treated Jason Newsted who was a competent bass player was pretty stupid, and I'm surprised he stuck around.

And Bob Rock was also responsible for Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood." So he's made a couple winners I guess... It's still no Shout at the Devil or TFFL"

I guess I just came in too late. I actually liked what ever album Sandman and Nevermore was on. They were great years in my opinion for most all forms of metal. We had that record, Empire, Countdown to Ext, and around the same period, 5150, OU812, Gutter Ballet, Edge of Thorns, and Images and Words. For me, being older and actually missing the early years of most of these non commercial bands (not VH)...........I thought, wow these guys finally grew up and put some feeling and thought into the music. I know the guyd I was in the band with were younger and grew up on the older stuff said they all sold out, I just never got that, I thought they all finally grew up and were pulling from more real life experiences rather than the youthful, idealistic, testosterone driven stuff. I do understand that because Zeps early stuff, what I grew up on, was my favorite over the latter but I like all that too.

Ill have to make note to get Metallicas early albums and do some studying. Also as much of a Queensryche fan that I am I still cant believe I dont have their most popular recording. I had it loaned to me and that was my intro to the band and it turned me immeadiatly...........yet I havent heard it since and have everything else they have done..................

Little by little my libary grows, kinda sad that its usually older bands.

ive actually just gotten into metallica over the last few months from my my friends, and i dont know much about the band themselves, i really like most of the songs. i also love S&M... those songs sound freakin awesome with the SF orchestra

Metallica lost my respect with the whole Napster ordeal, but this proves that they deserve no respect in the first place. Overrated band. Lars isn't a great drummer like everyone seems to think.

I love MOP and AJFA- 2 albums I will love & listen to until death. Seriously, if I see 90, I will still be listening to One. Oh; look at that: AJFA is in the CD drive of my PC right now.

I've already been thru 2 cassettes and on #3 (CD) of AJFA. They are the peak performance of Metallica and outstandings albums period, IMO. So much rage and anger.

I have no problem with the low bass on AJFA, but these heavier bass versions (only heard one so far- damned 56K connection) are completely worth the download time.

I have S&M (along with all other Metallica albums except St. Anger), and it's a pretty good disc. Not sure if I prefer it over the studio songs, but it's a nice twist from traditional metal.

When I first got into them, I picked up S&M, then Reload (mainly because I heard the song Fuel)...but the next one I got was Master of Puppets, and it blew me away. It was my first experience with 80s metal...what a disc! I remember putting it in my CD player for the first time. Battery started out with a nice little acoustical guitar for 45 seconds, and then like a sledgehammer...BAM! Solid wall of guitars. "Wow...this is Metallica?" I'd heard Battery on S&M, but it sounded so much different on Puppets. I'd never heard anything like it before...and that's what started my 80s metal obsession.

As per usual on S&M Lars and James drowned everything else out, I have that one. Savatage does a much better job with the classical blending and influence. Some of the arrangement that guy did, the composer, I cant come up with his name now were good but others a bit lame and A typical I felt, once again Savatage & TSO is far and beyond. That composer died about three years ago. Still was quite moving to hear one of the greatest metal bands on stage with a full orchestra.

New Song #2 appears to have some Kill'em All feel. New Song #1 can become interesting if it is cut shorter.
