Specifcally a 1994-1998 era GT. The attraction you ask?:

-Not a bad-looking thing.

-Cheap V8 power.

-RWD.

-Convertible version (if I was so inclined).

-Tons o' aftermarket support.

-Relatively easy to find.

Of course, this may be one of my (what I fear may become) infamous brief infatutions but at the moment it's looking pretty good to me.

Any thoughts?

I was pretty close to getting a '98 V6 Mustang a few years ago after my Lumina got hit. It only had 60,000 miles on it and my uncle who owns a used car dealership was offering to sell it to me for $6000 (went for $7,300 at the time), but in the end I opted not to b/c insurance would have probably killed me and college was a couple years away. It was in pretty good shape and very clean, but it also had the 3.8 which was not exactly one of Ford's hallmark engines in the mid 90s.

If I were to get a Mustang it'd have to be a GT (V8). I just couldn't drive a V6 Mustang. It just doesn't seem "proper".

It'd be like driving a V6 Camaro.

I agree...V6 Mustangs have too much of a chick stigma...especially if you're looking at the '94-'98s.

Now, if the new Mustang had something like a turbo Duratec 35, I'd consider it...but a clunker like the 3.8L just isn't worth it. Definitely go V8.

the V8 is nice on paper untill the insurance bill comes "yuck" oh right you dont live in michigan so your good. looks clean tho.

He can still get aftermarket part's to get more power. I'm merely stating that he has a good base vehicle to upgrade.

Find one that wasn't wrecked. Which, like any other muscle car, is hard to do. If it was properly repaired, that's one thing. Have it checked out.

Variance:

I was a huge fan of the '94 Mustang when it was released.

The styling was awsome for the era so even though I'm a

Camaro/Firebird guy I really liked the Mustang. The stock

GT fell short performance wise to the '94 F-body but at

least the Five-Oh 4.9 was a great motor with bullet proof

ability. The later Modular 4.6 I've never really liked.

That said it's a cheap RWD car with tons of aftermarket &

a very easy to work on platform. Parts are available any

place you look and the cars have a lot of potential if you're

willing to put some work/$ into it.

If it was me and I wanted a muscle car from the era I

would go for a Firebird/TA but that's just me.

I say go for it! 8)

My friend bought a new 1996 Mustang GT coupe that he loved, until he got a little bit older and realized what a harsh ride it had! He kept the car for about 4-5 years. It was nice, and being that the back seat was tight he wasn't always asked to do all the driving.

Personally, I like the styling of the '99-'04 Mustangs better than the '94-'98. Here's some pics:

I really looked into the '99s when they came out - but I knew even then a pony car like that wasn't a good choice for a family car (I had a '95 T/A at the time, and ended up with a new '99 Grand Am GT1 sedan). I think the edgier design of the '99 Mustang is more attractive over the softer styling of the '94-'98.

NOS my minivan can beat a mustang gt from those years . . . they hardly deserved the mark GT but still its not a bad car . . . i wouldnt go for the vert. . . its just gonna make it hotter in the summer and colder in the winter . . . its better to drive with the windows down or the AC blasting and its better for aerodynamics and weight reduction which is a favorite in those cars . . .

id say go for it as a cheap v8 powered car . . . but dont expect anything prime it is again still just a beat up old stang by now

GMTruckGuy: Truth be told, I would prefer a '99-'04 style but I've found the prices for GTs jump up a bit from there compared to '94-'98s.

Actually, I was trying to find that article that compares the '98 V6 Camaro to the same year Mustang GT but I couldn't find it. But they said with just a tune, the Camaro would take out the GT, but I've done much more than just the tune. :)
