Customer upset over Taco Bell "sauce wisdoms"

WESLACO – One Valley woman says the slogan on Taco Bell’s sauce packets is offensive.

As part of Taco Bell’s “Think outside the bun” campaign, the company held a contest last year for slogans to be printed on their sauce packets. Customers submitted their ideas, like “When I grow up I want to be a waterbed” and “You had me at taco”.

The one that bothers Jessica Luna says, “Not to be used as a flotation device”.

She tells NEWSCHANNEL 5, “Somewhere along their roots here, somebody came across the border from Mexico. Risking their lives to provide a better a life for their children. This is just a mockery.”

Luna says she enjoys Taco Bell’s food and has always eaten there a lot. But she wants the company to re-think its campaign.

We asked the company about the slogans. Director of Public Relations Rob Poetsch said, “Our Sauce Wisdoms are not directed at any specific group of people or at any specific region and are meant to inspire and entertain.”

We asked other people what they thought about the company’s humor. Customer Olga Garza said, “They don't bother me. They're not that funny, but they don't bother me.” Many told us they will still eat at the restaurant, despite their “tasteless” humor.

The company admits it has had a number of complaints about the packet. After our story aired, it decided to remove the one with the reference to a flotation device.

So how many Mexicans will lose their lives now... because they'll try to float across the Rio Grande with a sauce packet under each armpit.

Jessica Luna-tic is a racist! That disclaimer needs to be there to protect illegal aliens from drowning!

Just one more example of people not minding their own business. If people would take their noses out of their neighbours' asses, the world would be happier.

I'm curious... is she white? Because I honestly doubt many people from Latin America or Mexico felt insulted by this message... how one person ties the illegal immigration of (pardon me admin) "wetbacks" to a sauce packet that mention flotation devices is beyond me.

Don't people have lives? Doesn't she have kids to look after or a job or dinner to cook?

I have evaluated this kind of behavior in people for a few years since college. It seems to me that it has only been in the past 10 years this natural obcession with being offended by something completely harmless has grown beyond the scope of the hoity-toity well-to-do.

I'm of the opinion that some people feel the need to have a negative opinion of harmless things around them, claiming it offends them, just so they can look superior as having higher standards. It's quite rediculous, for certain.

Its like the lady that sued McDonalds for serving her hot coffee and her being stupid enough to scald herself.

No. McDonald's actually was playing with fire in this one. They deserved to lose that lawsuit. Read up on the case and you might understand.

How so?  Can you give us the "short" version of the story?

McD's served its coffee at 185 degrees and most other places served it at 165. Put that together with the fact there wasn't a label telling people not to spill it. It was her fault for taking off the lid while adding stuff to it when it was in her crotch that caused the spill. BTW the huge judgement that was first awarded was lowered after McDs appealed.

Details at link.
