Saw three EV1s. Even sat in one and 'drove' it when I was 15.* (*Okay, it was on a trip to Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center and I was chosen to sit in and rev the car up to demonstrate the lack of traditional shifting)

All this hybrid hype, when's the last time you saw an Insight?

And Supras are falling off the face of the regular earth also, esp. the last generation. It's like they all got eaten by the dragstrip crowd Nor can I remember the last time I've seen a 90s RX-7.

The only time I have ever seen them was about 5 years ago, in Sacramento in a downtown parking garage--4 of 'em in a row. I assume they were probably state government vehicles of some sort.

Awesome thread!
Brought out a bunch of posters I havn't seen post in a while!

I have yet to see a facelifted Oldsmobile Firenza (not many Jbod Firenza's around, but I did see a mid 80's one not long ago). I didn't even know these got a Ciera-style facelift!?

This pic comes from Wikipedia: 1982-1988 Oldsmobile Firenza photographed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. blink.gif
Maybe I have to go to Montreal...

Neither did I.

I also can't remember the last time I've seen a Syclone or Typhoon.

That I don't remember..I can't recall the last time I saw a Firenza or later Skyhawk. But I did see a late 1st gen ('87-88 or so) Sunbird convertible in decent shape recently..

Apaprently the Firenza did get that frontend treatment, a'la Ciera, for 1988. Here's another picture, this time of a coupe model, as featured in the 1988 movie "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!":

For those of you weirdos that think there's something cool
about that you'd probably love the burgundy '92? Buick
Century 2dr that is for sale about 2 miles away from my
huose... sitting there for a month now, no love I guess.

Here's an interesting vehicle that I had not seen in ages
untill one pulled up next to me the other day:

'77 AMC Gremlin. biggrin.gif

I took a few pics... it was rush hour on the highway so we
talked for a bit, this was a few weeks ago, I was driving
the Banana Boat so it made for good conversation.

I swear I haven't seen a honda, toyota or datsun made earlier than the early '80s in forever.
Did see a '72 Polara this past weekend.
What I always wonder about is hugely popular cars like the Pinto; haven't seen one of those in years & years either. (>Insert quip about exploding here<)

I used to kinda maintain a 'cut-off' year in my head: the year back-to that you'd still see infrequently running around. I remember when it inched up thru the later '60s, then it seemed to leapfrog over most of the '70s up to '77. Now it's seems to be at about '87 or thereabouts. The only exception is '70s Darts; I still them every once in a while.

Dude, that exploding thing was sooo sad. We were on vaccation as a family when I was a boy and we drove right past where those four girls were killed in that flaming Pinto about 45 minutes after it happened. I still remember the big black marks on the pavement.

But a lot of cars burned when they were hit in the ass end. I went to college with a guy named Joel Sonnenberg who was an infant in a Chevy Impala that was rear ended in a toll booth. He had MAJOR MAJOR burn injuries and lived the rest of his life with huge scars.

The Gremlin is one of those odd cars that I happen to like just because it is strange. Guy that lives about four blocks from me just sold an 89 Z-28 T-top car and bought an old VW THING. I like those strange animals also.

Call me nuts.

First gen Sunbird-Cavalier were decent cars.

GM should have killed them off before they brought out the second gen.

There is a small, ghetto car lot that has a Gremlin sitting back behind, I wonder if they're saving it for the day they become collector's items.

A word about the famous Pinto accident:

- Those girls had JUST FILLED UP that little POS with a full tank of gas
- They never put their gas cap back on
- It was a dumb move to stop the car half in the slow lane of a highway

So let's recap: four young naive girls pull over on the highway and get
promptly rear-ended by an 18-wheeled, 20-ton truck.... the open gas
tank gushes raw, fresh gasoline out of the filler neck and all over the
twised wreck which is now a huge jailcell, contorted into a solid ball of
bent up metal.

You know what would have helped their chances?

A DOT-mandated fire extinguisher in the semi.

BTW:

You know that little spring loaded-flap that partially closes
the fuel filler neck on your car when you take the nossle
out of the neck? Thank those girls for that invention.

Yeah... there's millions of those retards out there.
These people, that think cars age like a fine wine
even if kept under a pine tree parked on a soggy
muff of moss.

These retards are the ones who ensure the cars
end up at a junkyard as.... junk, or at best, if
they aree lucky they end up as parts cars.

It's a sad epidemic, I call it "Barrett Jackson syndrome"

You know:

I saw some '71 Plymouth something-or-other with
a 426 HEMI and white convertible top go through
auction on TV the other day for $2,500,000 and
still NOT MEET reserve...

so OBVIOUSLY my '72 Fury III 4-door hardtop HAS
to be worth something like $20,000.

Who cares if it does not run, and the heads to the
rusty-squirrel-nest 440 blockare in the trunk... and
the car has not run in 12 years or been moved
under it's own power since 1989....

Oh, and BTW: the carb ran a bit rich when I last
drove it so you - might - want to have that
rebuilt along with the transmission that has some
metal shavings on the dipstick....

It might be a good idea...

Okay, seriously $18,500 FIRM, and I keep all the
8-tracks in the glovebox.

+1 on the D.O.T. Fire Extinguisher.

As much as I get frustrated with government, I'm glad in a way for the DOT. After that horrible Amtrack accident that killed 16 people in the 80's, after that Conrail engeneer was high on Mary J...I am glad to have DOT drug testing for example.

Although I have no problem if people want to do that on their own time.

...and +1 on B-J Syndrome....

The '60s Mustangs have been in a few cases related to gas tanks because of the absurd drop-in gas tank design (the tank fits through a hole in the trunk floor, exposed inside the car). There was a big lawsuit involving the '78 Malibu also. Another bad thing about alot of old cars were the fuel fillers on the rear panel or behind the rear license plate..seems like a bad place for a fuel filler.

Perahps the dumbest MUSTANG design of the era was the 69-70 Shelby. IIRC, the exhaust exited center under the rear, right under the fuel filler location.

Darwin at work again, courtesy of FORD.

Although in 40 years the number of Mustang accidents where fire is the result of rear end collisions is no greater than any other 60's car.
