William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 24, 2012 If you have been reading any of the comparison tests of the new Cadillac ATS and the competition, you would have notice a reoccurring complaint; the six-speed manual transmission stinks. Apparently Cadillac is taking those criticisms to heart. A source tells Motor Trend that Cadillac has stopped production of ATSs equipped with the six-speed manual to fix complaints of the six-speed being awful. The fix involves moving to a softer bushing setup in the transmission. The fix will will be made before any cars equipped with the manual make it into the hands of consumers, meaning no recall. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 12, 2012 We been posting spy shots of the upcoming Cadillac ELR for the past couple of months. All of them being the exterior. We've been wondering what the interior will look like. Well the spy gods have heard our cries and photos of the ELR's interior have come out. Not a surprise in the Interior shots is the appearance of Cadillac's CUE Infortainment system and the steering wheel from the XTS and ATS. What is a surprise is the instrument cluster. Much like the Volt, this ELR mule uses a screen to display pertinent information. The layout mimics the Lexus LF-A supercar with a analog gauge sitting in the middle …

The Cadillac ELR is a beautiful car. It almost begs for a performance focused version -- something with Performance as first priority and Fuel Economy as a secondary but amicable goal. The idea here is not produce produce a Prius beater, rather it is to produce a car capable of reaching 60 mph in under 6 seconds yet able to deliver fuel economy that is superior to a Cruze Eco and approaching that of mid-size Hybrids. Cadillac VLR MSRP: $42,000 Type: 2-door, 4-passenger, FWD coupe Platform: Delta II w/ Aluminum hood, fenders and trunk lid. G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - CheersandGears.com We all love GM and how Cadillac has been on a roll lately. Yet even then we know that GM will never give you everything you have wanted or fullfill the niche area of ultimate performance. Now with Hennessey stepping up, it looks like Cadillac will truly have a monster that will put everyone in it's place, even Bugatti. Review the story and sound off on what you think of this Hennessey Built Monster! John Hennessey's tuning shop in Texas operates on a simple principle that denies the existence of "too much horsepower." William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 12, 2012 When the first-generation Cadillac CTS debuted in 2002, it premiered the Art & Science design language with crisp lines and sharp edges. Ask GM design chief Ed Welburn what he thinks of it and this is what he would say, "It had a dramatic presence, very angular. But when you really look at it, the surfacing of the body was not very sophisticated at all," Welburn said to Automotive News. The second-generation CTS would add some sculpture that would smooth out the angular look while remaining as interesting as the first-gen model. So what's in store for the next-generation CTS? Welburn says the car…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 6, 2012 Some new spy shots have come in today showing a camouflaged Cadillac ELR doing some hot-weather testing somewhere in the Southwest U.S. Despite GM's best efforts to cover-up the ELR mule, you can easily tell the three-bar grille and corporate crest visible on all Cadillacs. The overall shape is similar to the Converj concept shown back in 2009. The ELR is expected to come with the Voltec powertrain from Volt. Expect the ELR to have more power since it will weigh more than the Volt. A larger battery is also being talked. Source: Automobile Magazine William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gear…

Checked out a real live XTS at a d'ship today. It was locked and had a 21 day on it, I assume it was left on the lot over the weekend to show off. Here is my impression on the design in the real world. Very nice. There is some subtle complexities to the shape and details on this vehicle that come together in person. It is amazing how narrow the car is in actuality, and how tiny the ass end looks from seeing it directly behind. Overall there is really not any element of the exterior I dislike (aside from suggesting that the car looks narrow). It's an evolutionary look, nothing special, but it also has no hood and no deck and to evolve proportions in that regard, and…

Autoweek has published the first ATS full test and from what they find they feel it is world class and has what it takes to compete. I have always found Autoweeks reviews generally the most balanced and fair in the media market [not counting those here]. They have tested all three engines in the RWD model and they love the car. In all areas it is either best in class or as good. Here are some of the highlights. Interior is A4 matches build quality and is better than the # series. The ATS is lightest in class by 113 pounds and the weight loss is not due to anything that will contribute to noise or harshness. In other words Cadillac did not take the easy way out. Brakes…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 24, 2012 Automotive News reports that General Motors has given the green light to the Cadillac Flagship. The new flagship is expected to begin production sometime in 2015. Design of the new Cadillac flagship will be influenced by the Ciel concept shown at last year's Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The flagship will be based on the long-rumored Omega RWD platform. There will be the option of AWD as well. Power for the new flagship will include the 3.6L V6 and a range of V8 engines. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 25, 2012 When Cadillac showed the XTS Platinum Concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, it was equipped with a 3.6L DI V6 and a plug-in hybrid system that produced a potent 350 HP. However, the production XTS probably won't have a hybrid version. AutoGuide had the chance to sit down with Cadillac Communications Manager David Caldwell. Caldwell said a hybrid version of the XTS, either to provide more fuel-economy or power is highly unlikely. If Cadillac was to provide more power for the XTS, they would go in a different direction. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 10, 2012 Cadillac has sent mules of the next-generation Cadillac CTS off to Europe for testing and some new spy photos show them in action. Apparently in Europe, its ok to have less camouflage on your test car and that gives us some big hints as to what designers have in mind for the CTS. The large front grille bears a striking resemblance to the Ciel concept. The front headlights, currently prototype assemblies at this time, appear to have a set of LED running lights. The side profile of this mule reveals the rear window is more raked than the current model, almost mimicking the CTS coupe. Most likely, this is to…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 2, 2012 General Motors has been quiet on the new Cadillac ELR since announcing it would go into production for the 2014 model year. However, Car & Driver has uncovered some information that shines some light of what we could expect of Cadillac’s new extended-range EV. It’s been bandied about that ELR would share the same Voltec powertrain used in the Chevrolet Volt, but rumor has it that the ELR will swap the current 1.4L engine and use a naturally aspirated variant of Opel’s newly-developed Ecotec MGE engine. The Ecotec MGE engine is the base for a future family of low-emissions, direct-injection four-cylinder …

Should Cadillac do a carbon fiber monocoque supercar with an American twist to rival the Ferrari 458? Such a vehicle will also put Caddy in the same field as the McLaren MP4-12C, Lamborghini Gallardo, Lexus LFA, Porsche 912, you name it). This will be a small volume vehicle probably around 2000 units a year and the carbon fiber chassis will probably be outsourced. It'll sell for around $150K. What GM has that the world doesn't is the light, compact, powerful and efficient small block V8. Unlike all the aforementioned cars, the Caddy will save a lot of money on powertrain development allowing it to spend more on the chassis and other finishings while selling the car for r…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 14, 2012 When the Cadillac XTS was first revealed, most everyone in the press said this was the new flagship. However, GM's North American president is making it clear that there could be a real Cadillac flagship. Mark Reuss, GM's president for North America recently told Automotive News that a flagship Cadillac is on the table. The flagship would be a continuation of how GM has been positioning Cadillac's lineup to better match-up with competitors. The new ATS will tackle the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, while the next CTS will grow in size to better compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. “I’m a…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2012 The next Cadillac CTS is just around the corner and Inside Line has gotten their hands on new spy shots that reveal some key parts that will appear when the it arrives in the 2014 model year. Starting with the exterior, the front end appears to have some Ciel infulence with its flat and wide grille. Other items that we can pick out include aggressive wheels/tires and large brakes. Inside, the CTS will get Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, a stitched dash, and paddle shifters. The big news lies under the hood. This CTS mule appears to be packing a twin-turbo V6 and the way we can tell that is due to …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 10, 2012 Its been a few months since we last heard anything about the rumored Omega RWD platform that could be underpinning future Cadillac flagships. Our last report in September said a sedan and hard top are in the works and will be appearing sometime in 2015. A new report from Car and Driver says GM has a few Omega vehicles on the way, with the first one arriving sometime in 2015. Omega will take hold of the larger RWD vehicles ranging from a midsize luxury sedan (CTS, 5-Series, E-Class) up to length of 207 inches (about the same length of an Audi A8L). The first vehicle in question is the replacement for the…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 7, 2012 With summer just around the corner, Cadillac decided to announce pricing for the new ATS sedan today. Pricing begins at $33,990 (Includes Destination) for the base 2.5L four-cylinder producing 200 HP and 188 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic, Cadillac says highway fuel economy will be "well over 30 mpg". Want a bit more power? Well, the 2.0L turbo-four producing 270 HP and 260 lb-ft rings in at $35,795. Buyers will have the choice of either a six-speed manual or automatic, as well as rear or all-wheel drive. The top dog of the ATS lineup, the 3.6L DI V6 producing about 320 HP comes in at…

When is GM going to release pricing details and a configurator for the ATS. Wasn't it due in showrooms this summer...seems they should be announcing something by now before the public forgets about it. We already got info on the XTS, although I don't recall the timing of those in showrooms in comparison. I'm anxiously awaiting to see if I can afford an ATS with AWD.

G. Blake Noble Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 26th, 2012 Yesterday, we reported about OnStar possibly letting word slip about what name GM may apply to the upcoming Holden Commodore-based Chevrolet sports sedan. According to this screen capture nabbed yesterday by tech blogger Christopher Price, for a short time OnStar’s 2014 compatibility guide listed the Cadillac ELR. The Cadillac ELR — whose name actually stands for “Electric Long Range” and not “Electric Luxury Roadster” — will more or less be a production version the Volt-based Converj luxury coupe con…

Cadillac is finally showing off the new XTS sedan today at the LA Auto Show. The XTS takes the place of the DTS and STS sedans to become Cadillac's large sedan. And large it is with a length of 202 in., width of 72.9in., height of 59.1 in., and rides on a wheelbase that is 111.7 in. Cadillac says those measurements help give the XTS 40 in. of rear legroom and a trunk capacity of 18 cubic feet. Styling is very close to the XTS Platinum concept shown at last years North American International Auto Show. Step inside the XTS and your greeted with either perforated or supple black leather with french, white stitching. The dash is covered in leather with a handful of accents…

GM Kills The SRX Plug-In Hybrid.. For Now... William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 1, 2011 For the past few months, the rumors of a SRX Plug-In Hybrid have been making the rounds. Using technology from the Chevrolet Volt, the SRX Plug-In Hybrid was expected to go on sale within a couple of years. Now, Reuters is reporting the SRX Plug-In Hybrid has been put out to pasture. Sources at GM said by the time the SRX PHEV was ready for production, the Theta platform would be at the end of it's life cycle, adding to the cost of the vehicle. This is the third time GM has canned some sort of PHEV project over the past few years. Reuters sugges…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 12, 2012 The smallest Cadillac currently is the new ATS sedan. But that could be changing. “The (compact) ATS sedan is not as small as we could go at Cadillac,” says Dave Leone, vehicle-line executive for the ATS. “The ATS is only the first entry. The ATS platform is scalable, so we could go smaller or larger.” The ATS is 7.7 inches shorter than the CTS, but the platform could be scaled down even further, possibly spawing a competitor to the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3, and Mercedes A-Class. Leone went onto to say, a smaller ATS would “a legitimate entry in the largest segment in the industry, the small, entry-le…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 3, 2012 Motor Trend is reporting that a coupe version of the new Cadillac ATS has been put on hold. The reason lies in GM’s stock price dropping like a rock; 30% drop since from its November 2010 initial public offering price. GM hopes by delaying or cancelling projects to save money, that will raise their stock price up. This is where we begin to enter the twilight zone of ATS rumors. For the past year, we’ve been hearing different models of the ATS moving around from going into development, put on the shelf, or being cancelled. Last year, rumors had said the ATS would come in Sedan, Wagon, Coupe, and Conver…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Today, Cadillac has revealed the powertrain lineup for their new ATS sedan. The lineup includes two fours and a six. The base ATS engine will be naturally aspirated 2.5L I-4 engine. GM hasn't released any details about it, but it looks like to be the same engine found under the new Chevrolet Malibu, which gets 190 HP and 180 lb-ft of torque. The next engine up is a 2.0L turbocharged I-4.Now before you go out and think this is the same engine you find in the Regal Turbo and GS, it's not. The company told Autocar this week, they will build a RHD CTS-V for the United Kingdom as a start to a renewed commitment to taking markets outside U.S. more seriously. With GM's announcement yesterday, we finally have concrete numbers on the ATS's weight. ATS 3.6 V6 = 3,456 lbs ATS 2.5 / 2.0T < 3,400 lbs Honestly, this is at the lowest end of the expect range for the V6 powered car and only about 100 lbs heavier than the 328i. It also means that with the same engine, the ATS is no heavier than the Delta II Verano -- that's no small feat. Given GM's porky track record, I expected the ATS to come in at about ~3,600 for the V6. This is excellent news. Given that the Small Block V8 is only 40 lbs heavier than the DOHC 3.6 V6, this opens up the possibility of a Pushrod V8 powered ATS-V at around 3,600 lbs and still under 3,700 l…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 11, 2012 Following on the heels of introducing the new ATS, Cadillac is thinking about adding a smaller crossover. “We’re looking at options there. I think it would go a little bit more head-to-head with like the X3,” said Kurt McNeil, Cadillac’s vice president of sales. BMW's redesigned X3 has been a hit in the North American market. The new X3 was built with North American consumers in mind, which is the opposite of what Cadillac would have to do in order to profitably expand its portfolio. “The fact that Cadillac is becoming more of a global brand will certainly play a role in that decision,” McNeil said…

The last time Cadillac offered a diesel engine was back in the early eighties and was a horrid engine, tarnishing Cadillac's reputation and vehicles. But now, Cadillac is once again thinking about a diesel engine. Don Butler, Cadillac’s marketing vice president said in a interview at the LA Auto Show that Cadillac was considering a diesel engine for vehicles sold outside the United States. Omega Likely To Be Approved For Cadillac Flagship, More Hybrids William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 1, 2011 In a report from the The Detroit Bureau, GM is expected to give the green light for the new Omega platform for a new Cadillac flagship. The news comes a few days after GM showed off the Cadillac Ciel concept at Pebble Beach and received much acclaim. The report says a sedan and a hard-top are in the works. No one is saying when the vehicle is expected to come out, but signs are pointing towards 2015. But that's not all. Cadillac is making it clear they will be offering a range of hybrid vehicles, starting with the new ELR.…

Cadillac Ciel Concept Celebrates the Journey 2011 Cadillac Ciel Concept Gallery PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Cadillac today unveiled the Ciel concept, an elegant, open-air grand-touring car inspired by the natural beauty of the California coast. The Ciel – pronounced “C-L,” the French translation for sky – is a four-seat convertible that opens a new chapter in Cadillac’s design and product ascent, pushing the brand’s Art & Science philosophy into a new stratum. Ciel is a new expression of Cadillac’s historical grandeur, as well as a celebration of open-air motoring. “Large, expressive luxury is innate to Cadillac and the Ciel recalls that heritage, while…

According to the Cadillac website, the 3.0 and 3.6 engines get identical mileage (18/26) in AWD and RWD configurations (I find that slightly suspect), but offer slightly different power outputs. Can someone please enlighten me on what meaningful differences exist between these two engines? If fuel economy is the same, why would one choose one engine over the other?

Cadillac is a big tease on their new small car August 4th, 2011 - Drew Dowdell - Cheersandgears.com Mark Reuss showed a hint of the upcoming Cadillac compact codenamed the ATS. The ATS launches in Summer 2012 and will be built at GM's Lansing Grand River Assembly along with the Cadillac CTS. In a bit of a tip of the hand, Mr. Reuss called the ATS "codenamed", a distinction not used when he discussed the upcoming Cadillac XTS. This may mean that the ATS name has not yet been finalized.

Rumorpile: GM Resurrects The Cadillac Converj William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 11, 2011 The Cadillac Converj concept received many acclaims when it was shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, which caused GM to pursue development a few months later. However the Converj project was given the ax in 2010 due to two reasons: GM couldn't make a profit on the small volume of Converjs being built and the worry of the of enginners the range and performance of the electric powertrain. However, a source close to project at GM says the project has been revived. The source says executives at GM gave the project a green li…

2012 Cadillac SRX gains the LFX July 26th, 2011 Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com For 2012 Cadillac is dumping the smooth but overwhelmed 3.0 liter V6 and replacing it with the new LFX 308 horsepower V6 giving it a jump of 43 horsepower over the 2011 model. While the 308 horsepower is a good marketing bump, where consumers will feel the biggest change is in the torque rating. The outgoing 3.0 V6 produced just 223 lb-ft of torque at a lofty 5,100rpm. This meant that the driver would have to keep the engine rev higher even just for regular city driving. Indeed, the lack of torque was noted in our earlier review of the 2011 Cadillac SRX 3.0 and 2.8 Turbo. Cadillac rem…

I am not atall sure about anyone else, but after seeing spyshots of a first-gen CTS wagon I cannot help but wish it had been produced. It looks really good, and I especially love the roofline and tail end treatment. It has a REAL station wagon look to it, with nice big quarter windows so you can see out of it, unlike the second-gen production version.

The following was published by Cadillac in a print advertisement circa 1915 in response to a Packard advertisement crticial of Cadillac. I believe it still applies. The Penalty of Leadership "In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. Cadillac Taking Some Lessons From BMW For The ATS William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 16, 2011 Cadillac wants the ATS to succeed badly not only in North America, but worldwide. So they're are studying the big dog in the compact luxury class; the BMW 3-Series. According to Autoblog, GM has brought in various 3-Series models and stripped them down to their bare metal. The reason; to figure out what makes the 3-Series tick and how they can implement it into the ATS. It makes you wonder why didn't they think of this sooner, but no better time is better than the present. Hopefully, GM takes what they learn from tear downs and utilize this …

Cadillac Working On A Convertible? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 1, 2011 Cadillac's recent track record with convertibles has been abysmal. The Allanté from the late 80's and the recent XLR had high aspirations, but fell flat in sales. Car & Driver is now reporting that Cadillac is working a convertible that will fit between the ATS and CTS. The convertible will use a fabric roof to help with the vehicle's weight. Engine choices for the convertible could range from turbo-4, V6, or V8s. The convertible is expected to come out in late 2013 as a 2014 model. Source: Car & Driver

Ch-Ch-Changes For The CTS In 2012 William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 19, 2011 2012 Cadillac CTS Gallery Cadillac is adding some changes for the 2012 CTS. Exterior wise, the CTS gets a new grill that uses premium finishes to highlight the grill's use of frame and mesh. Also, the Wreath & Crest logo has been tweaked (again) with brighter colors and raised ridges. The big news comes from the 3.6 DI V6 which now gets 318 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque; up from 304 horses and 273 lb-ft on the current 3.6. The 3.6 also weighs 20.5 lbs less than the current motor and will still get the current EPA rating of 18 city/27 highwa…

To keep the long story short, the GM has a new 3.6 liter V6. It's called the LFX. It'll be used in the Camaro, the CTS and everything else that currently use the 3.6 DI V6. It makes 318~323 hp / 275~278 lb-ft. As is desirable for a across the board engine, it runs on 87 Octane with 11.3:1 compression. The question is whether Cadillac should get a "Premium" version of this powerplant. Premium as in "Premium" performance as well as "Premium" fuel. Going to 91 Octane will enable the compression ratio to go up about a point to about 12.3:1 with higher compression pistons, this alone should bump output by about 7~8% which will take you to about 340hp horses. With some minor c…

Cadillac Announces 3.6L DI V6 For The 2012 SRX (Finally!) William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 12, 2011 If there is an Achilles's Heel for the Cadillac SRX, it would be the engine lineup. Either the engine didn't have enough power (3.0L V6) or problems with the type fuel put in and abysmal fuel economy (2.8T V6). Now, Cadillac is rectifying that by offering a 3.6L DI V6 for the 2012 SRX. The 3.6 is projected to produce 300 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque and will be able to run on E85. Other changes for the 2012 SRX include Bluetooth becoming standard on all models, door lock switches on the driver and passenger doors, and heated steering…

Third Time's The Charm? Cadillac Returns To Europe William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 22, 2011 Cadillac and Europe haven't been the best of friends. The past two times Cadillac has sold vehicles in Europe, sales have come up short and the lineup offered didn't exactly meet Europe's demands. Now, Cadillac is hoping its third try into the European market is a success. “The only thing you can do is try, try and try again with Cadillac in Europe,” said GM CEO Dan Akerson. A lot of talk on web sites have been coming up that the CTS V coupe may make it's way into NHRA Pro Stock with or with out GM's help. The G6 GXP coupes are good till 2013 but many teams are already looking got a new car to move to. Most still want the GM power but have little to chose from for a Coupe body. Reports have the Camaro as a problem for the series as the roof line c pillar will not work with the tubs and needs to be relocated. NHRA is not willing to let them reshape the roof. The cars are not stock but they would like to keep them at least close in the green house area. This is where the CTS V comes in. The C pillar and roof line works well to adapt to the …

2011 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum: What a Cadillac Should Be By Joel Feder Cadillac latest advertising campaign pegs the brand as “The New Standard of the World.” But are they really? The V8 RWD SRX (which didn't sell well simply because it was odd looking) was replaced by a FWD V6 Equinox. The V8 RWD STS is going away - and NOTHING is replacing it (The XTS is not a replacement for the STS). The V8 DTS is being replaced by a V6 that rides on the same platform as a Chevy Impala and Buick LaCrosse.. Who cares if the V6 has slightly more horsepower than the Northstar? It's lacks in torque.. And the Northstar in the DTS was weak for the segment it competed in anyway. So the V6 may be just as good as the V8 in the old DTS. Wow. Great news. It's still too weak for a full-size luxury sedan. A new CTS will replace the old CTS and will probably be a little bit…

I stuck this in with Cadillac, tho I tend to shy away from such a 'dismissive' linking, and because I think this is significant enough to keep it public (the Lounge was my 2nd choice). Here are some new vids focusing on the rescued 1955 LaSalle II roadster Motorama show car, internally known as XP-34. This car, tho historically fell thru the cracks and garnered little attention from enthusiasts, was a technological tour de force. One of the most amazing things learnt here is the sheer towering mastery General Motors was regularly exercising in the 1950s, one of it's greatest decades of all time. Usually the term "pushmobile" is an automatic excuse to wave off a car as…

Sat in one today. Let me just say it was a huge turnoff. The dash and center stack area is okay, but everything else was pretty terrible. Seats were awful, both in terms of comfort and leather quality. Button/lever to release seatback to allow access to rear door seemed like it was about to break. The backseat was apparently designed for midgets. I realize the rakish roofline contributes to this, but ugh. I'm only 6' tall and I had absolutely no chance of sitting comfortably back there. If I was 5'6 I may have fit. Rear visibility is atrocious. I thought the Camaro had no rear visibility. The CTS coupe makes the Camaro seem like a greenhouse. Couldn't believe how diff…

While Mr. Nesbitt won't confirm nor deny the platform the XTS will be riding on, he does say that the concept car will be shown at the upcoming North American International Auto Show and that it should reveal a very strong hint as to the design direction of the production vehicle.
