I'm watching the local news (Channel 5) and they are about to do a story on the Tacoma's frame failures. This is the first I've seen of it being reported by the mainstream media. You can see some of the older articles on Channel 5's website. http://www.thebostonchannel.com/search/for...amp;x=0&y=0 Tonight's story showed severely rotted Tacomas with holes in the frame. However it also says that the owners of one of the Tacomas are being denied the buyback because their truck "isn't bad enough yet". Other owners junked their truck because it was too rusty to be safe to drive four months before the buybacks were announced. Toyota told them they are SOL (but they'r…

Harry Stoffer Automotive News April 22, 2008 - 12:01 am ET UPDATED: 04/22/08 3:51 p.m. EDT McLEAN, Va. -- The Bush administration wants automakers to get a running start on a congressionally mandated 40 percent increase in fuel economy standards by 2020. In proposed rules unveiled today, the administration is asking car companies to achieve a 25 percent improvement during the 2011-15 model years -- in effect, a 4.5 percent compounded annual increase. The expected result by 2015 would be cars that must average 35.7 mpg and light trucks that must average 28.6 mpg, for a combined 31.6 mpg. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters called the proposal " an aggress…

Harry Stoffer Automotive News April 21, 2008 - 4:25 pm ET WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration apparently will try to spruce up its battered environmental image with an Earth Day announcement of higher fuel economy standards. Although there was no confirmation as of this afternoon, administration officials on Tuesday, April 22, are expected to reveal proposed fuel economy standards for cars and trucks in the 2011-15 model years. The Department of Transportation said Secretary Mary Peters will make an announcement on " protecting the environment." Federal law dictates that standards must rise to a combined 35 mpg by 2020, about 40 percent higher than today.…

Interesting article on safety tech and it's ballooning costs & debatable results: Lookie >>"Ironically, by improving visibility these so-called smart beams could encourage people to drive faster — and more dangerously — at night."<< This is a general thought I've had, esp in context of reading a debate on a hot rodders forum about vintage vs. new car safety. More & more safety features enable increasing dependancy and less experience/ intuitive skills. Many on the hot rodders forum were of the opinion that cars were safer, but drivers were much less so (not to mention way more distracted). I can agree with that without hesitation. >>"D…

http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/pdf/r1098.pdf It's one of those "no duh" things, but they finally correlated roof strengths of various SUVs with their corresponding rollover death and injury rates. After both vehicles were subjected to 10,000 lbs of crushing force... the 2000 Xterra's roof was crushed about 2 inches; the 2000 Explorer's was crushed about 10 inches. It certainly brings back memories of the whole Firestone/Explorer fiasco.. Here's a chart of the NHTSA results: The strongest roof tested is the XC90's, while the strongest relative to vehicle weight is the Jetta's.

Linkity Regulators Look to Raise Bar On Vehicles' Roof Strength March 3, 2008 EYES ON THE ROAD By JOSEPH B. WHITE If you dropped a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta on its roof, and then did the same thing to a big, tough Dodge Ram pickup truck, which one would likely suffer less damage and do a better job protecting the passengers? The answer, based on a federal test of roof strength, is the Jetta. If that doesn't make sense to you, take comfort in the fact that you aren't alone. Since the early 1990s, car makers have dramatically improved the crashworthiness of the fronts, sides and rears of their cars, responding to the demands of cons…

Linkity Americans Start to Curb Their Thirst for Gasoline By ANA CAMPOY March 3, 2008; Page A1 As crude-oil prices climb to historic highs, steep gasoline prices and the weak economy are beginning to curb Americans' gas-guzzling ways. In the past six weeks, the nation's gasoline consumption has fallen by an average 1.1% from year-earlier levels, according to weekly government data. That's the most sustained drop in demand in at least 16 years, except for the declines that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which temporarily knocked out a big chunk of the U.S. gasoline supply system. This time, however, there is evidence that Americans are…

Linkity Workers Get Incentives to Live Greener Perks Help Spread A Firm's Mission And Foster Goodwill By KELLY K. SPORS It irked Greg James to see some of his employees roll up to work in hulking, gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles -- often driving more than 40 miles a day round trip. So in 2005 he finally did something about it. The chief executive and founder of Topics Entertainment Inc., a Renton, Wash., DVD and software publisher, Mr. James established an incentive program that offers its 55 employees $1,000 to trade in their automobiles for one with fewer cylinders in the engine. Buying a hybrid or biodiesel vehicle earns t…

My buddy's brother runs a hydraulic shop where they sell a lot of plows. My buddy told me the shop just got a notice from toyota NOT to install any plows on tundras or the warranty will be voided. Bro is pissed, he'll have to return like 25 toyo-spec plow packages to the manufacturer. Don't know what will happen with those trucks that already have them mounted... Apparently there are frame engineering issues under load that toyo doesn't want to be bothered with fixing or warrantying, but I have not seen the bulletin. Anyone else heard of this?? Oh... what a feeling.... of letdown.... again.

Car Sales Fall 4.3%; GM Alone Posts Rise By JOSÉE VALCOURT and MIKE SPECTOR February 2, 2008; Page A2 DETROIT -- U.S. auto sales fell 4.3% in January and slumped to their slowest level in years, adding to fears the economy is slipping into a recession. Instead of cancelling all of these zeta cars, what if GM petitioned for a special CAFE exemption in exchange for building them all as E-100 Ethanol only? The cars could be optimised with high compression engines and sold at a healthy premium. Not only would they be clean and powerful, and running on domestic fuel, but they could be ambassadors for the expansion of Ethanol's popularity. The demand and buzz would help to drive the infrastructure for E-85 and ethanol in general forward at an increased pace. The cars would then be able to be offered in E-85 form as soon as certain levels of E-85 availability are reached. The other OEMs could do the same. These cars could be…

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s namesake division may declare itself the No. 1 auto brand in the U.S. for 2007. General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet won't agree. The dispute pivots on one question: How should sales of Toyota's Scion cars be tallied? At stake are bragging rights that go with the top-selling line of autos in the U.S. Toyota's count includes Scion, cars that bear no Toyota badges and are marketed separately. By that measure, the Japanese automaker's lead through November sets the stage for a full-year win. Leave Scion out, and Chevy will likely retake the title when results are released tomorrow. ``I don't think for a second that Scion is a T…

Can Detroit pull out of its slump? 1/7/2008 11:31 AM ET Sourced from Business Week Link to original article on MSN After a horrendous year, US automakers say they see light at the end of the tunnel. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/29/con...ards/index.html There are some interesting points to the new fuel bill. One is credit alternative fuels, so would GM be better off only making 4 cylinders, diesels and flex fuel V8's? It also classifies F150s and Silverados as large work trucks exempt from the standards. Truck Rated Safe, With Asterisk Synopsis Link to NY Time article WHEN the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced the latest list of what it considers the safest vehicles last week, there was a surprising newcomer: a pickup truck. The newcomer is the Toyota Tundra, which beat its domestic competitors from Ford, Nissan and Dodge. The Chevrolet Silverado and a close relative, the GMC Sierra, were not among the vehicles tested. Starting last year, the institute added a crash-prevention feature, electronic stability control, to its criteria. The Tundra got the top pick designation even though its stability control system doesn’t work when four-wheel-drive is…

For those of us who work in real estate, when we hear that question it feels like we're wearing night vision goggles and standing on the prow of the Titanic while the Captain shouts down "Do you see anything ahead?". We're shouting back, but he can't hear us. Since December 2006, 170 mortgage lenders have shut down. The job loss involved in that is simply staggering. Many of these companies have anywhere between 100-500 employees, some are much larger. Assuming 300 as an average, that would mean at least 51,000 people have lost their jobs since December 2006. If GM or Ford fired 51,000 people it would be front page of the New York Times, but because the losses are sprea…

October 08, 2007 The General Motors Branding Lesson Toyota passed General Motors' seven-decade reign earlier this year as the world's largest car producer by volume. That’s right 70 years of leadership came to an end. Today, Toyota has America’s best selling car, the Camry, and GM is struggling to make dwindling brands, such as Buick and Pontiac, mean something to consumers. When something like this happens to a company of this stature, it's important to discover why this occurred. These are important lessons as George Santayana warned, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." What went went wrong with GM? Here’s a detailed analysis. When A…

Pickup for Auto Makers May Not Last Cash Incentives Boost Sales on Trucks, But Some Question Sustainability By JOHN D. STOLL October 8, 2007; Page A12 With gasoline prices hovering near $3 a gallon and the housing market in a slump, large pickup sales should be suffocating. Instead, a price war among the major players in the sector is boosting sales and market share for gas-thirsty vehicles such as the Toyota Tundra, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram. The increased truck sales contributed to last month's mixed overall auto-sales report, which offered the industry hope that a months-long sales slide could be coming to an end. By Robert W. Crandall and Hal J. Singer Sept. 6, 2007 Several bills are working their way through Congress that would increase the corporate average fuel economy standard (CAFE) for cars and light trucks by 4 percent per year, reaching a target of 35 miles per gallon by 2018. Aside from economists, whose voices often carry little weight in Washington, there is virtually no opposition to this form of regulation. Not even from a Republican president. To bolster support for these new rules, CAFE proponents have issued two studies that purport to show that increasing the CAFE standard to 35 miles per gallon would generate fuel savings for car owners in excess of the adm…

NHTSA issues new airbag regulations David Shepardson | Detroit News | Washington Bureau WASHINGTON -- Motorists will be protected by both head and torso side airbags by 2013, under a new regulation adopted today. The rule unveiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires automakers to install side curtain and side torso airbags by Sept. 1, 2013. It goes beyond what automakers pledged to do in 2003, when they voluntarily agreed to install side head airbags -- but not side torso airbags. The 291-page regulation will save more than 300 lives per year and 260 serious injuries per year -- a smaller estimate than when NHTSA initially proposed upgradin…

NEW YORK (AP) - Major automakers are scheduled Tuesday to report August sales, which some analysts expect to decline because of sluggish consumer spending, higher gasoline prices and weakness in the housing market. Buckingham Research Group analyst Joseph C. Amaturo expects retail sales to come in weak for the third straight month in August, which could pressure auto-related stocks. "Weaker year-over-year retail sales reinforce our concerns about the weaker consumer, in particular, as it relates to high ticket discretionary items," Amaturo wrote in a note to clients. Amaturo expects Ford Motor Co.'s August overall sales to decline at least 10 percent from a year ago…

Consumer Reports: Never To Be Truted? Posted on 08.13.2007 12:00 by Ralph Kalal Link to original artical on www.topspeed.com Consumer Reports, the publication of Consumer’s Union, has long been accused of a bias toward imported cars, particularly those made by Japanese brand manufacturers, and against anything built by a Detroit automaker. The bias hasn’t changed. Apparently, it’s intentional and institutional. The current issue of Consumer Reports purports to offer a comparison test of the new Toyota Tundra pick-up truck and the Chevy Silverado, as well as the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150. So, you’d expect them to get comparable vehicles, wouldn’t you? Apparentl…

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp aims to sell around 10.4 million vehicles worldwide in 2009, up 18 percent from last year as it grabs market share in North America and taps growing demand in China and other emerging economies, business daily Nikkei reported on Wednesday. Clearing the 10 million milestone would be an auto industry first and likely cement Toyota's position as the world's biggest car maker. Toyota surpassed General Motors Corp to take the top spot in 2006, according to Automotive News. "It is incrementally good news," said CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets auto analyst Christopher Richter, who estimates Toyota's sales for 2009 at 10.2 million units. "They cont…

Other companies have been experimenting with similar programs, which is causing concern about how much privacy drivers may unwittingly give up in exchange for savings. The only information OnStar would share with GMAC insurance, both companies said, would be the number of miles driven each month. GMAC would use that information to help it calculate risk. Drivers must enroll in the OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics service to get the discount. The biggest …

Is Hybrid Fever Cooling? Interest wanes as mileages come down by Bengt Halvorson | Link to Original Article @ TCC | (2007-07-24) Are some customers less willing to consider hybrid models once their optimistic high-mileage expectations become more realistic? The derision was deserved. The U.K. automotive industry was second in scale only to that of the U.S. in the 1950s. It was the world’s leading car exporter, putting bread on hundreds of thousands of tables across the country. Today, the U.K.’s indigenous manufacturers have either vanished or been taken over by foreign competitors. No other country so nonchalantly kissed goodbye to so much potential we…

Wall Street Journal China-Made Tires Are Subject Of Lawsuit After Fatal Accident By TIMOTHY AEPPEL June 25, 2007 1:02 p.m. A recent lawsuit arising from a fatal auto accident in Pennsylvania is pointing toward another potentially hazardous Chinese import, this time tires. The accident occurred last August, when a steel-belted radial on a cargo van carrying four passengers allegedly experienced a tread separation -- the type of problem that prompted the big Firestone recall of 2000 -- causing the driver to loose control and crash. Two passengers were killed, the two others injured, one severely. The tire's U.S. distributor -- Foreign Tire Sales Inc. of Union, N.J., …

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted Thursday to require average fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon for new cars, pickup trucks and SUVs by 2020, raising efficiency standards that have not changed significantly for nearly two decades. The fuel economy measure was added to a broad energy bill without a roll call vote even as senators were holding a news conference announcing the compromise. Republicans earlier blocked Democratic efforts to raise oil taxes by $29 billion and use the money to promote renewable fuels and other clean energy programs. Democratic leaders hoped to complete the energy bill Thursday night, but senators close to the auto industry began an effort to der…

Link to Newsvine Nearly 400 fuel-efficient hybrids have been tested in the city's taxi fleet over the past 18 months, with models including the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, the Lexus RX 400h and the Ford Escape. Under Bloomberg's plan, that number will increase to 1,000 by October 2008, then will grow by about 20 percent each year until 2012, when every yellow cab — currently numbering 13,000 — will be a hybrid.
