Fisker Automotive plans to build a plug-in hybrid car at the empty Boxwood Road plant near Newport, a decision that will give Delaware a prominent role in a government-backed reshaping of the American auto industry. A formal announcement from Fisker could come as soon as Tuesday, according to sources with knowledge of the company's plans. Fisker, a startup automaker based in Irvine, Calif., confirmed earlier this week that company representatives have met with Delaware officials and toured the Boxwood Road plant, idle since July when General Motors ended production there. The company is planning to renovate the abandoned domestic factory with proceeds from a $359 mi…

GM Looking at New Ad Agencies for Chevrolet For a long time, politics and personal relationships have kept the Chevy/Campbell-Ewald relationship bound together as if by Crazy Glue; even when the advertising and thinking that produced it was terrible. The agency has been Chevy's agency since 1922. 1922!!!!!!! That was then. Chevy IS General Motors. It used to be that Chevy was just one of eight brands at GM in North America. Going forward, it is one of four. But in fact, it is the whole show. If Chevrolet does not increase market share and improve perception, it's not going to matter what happens at Buick, GMC and Cadillac. Discussion: Chevrolet hunting for a new…

GM - Saturn - Penske deal is DEAD! Today we learned that Penske Automotive Group (PAG) has decided to terminate discussions with General Motors to acquire Saturn. This is very disappointing news and comes after months of hard work by hundreds of dedicated employees and Saturn retailers who tried to make the new Saturn a reality. PAG's announcement explained that their decision was not based on interactions with GM or Saturn retailers; rather it was because of the inability to source new products beyond what it had asked GM to build on contract. As a result of PAG's decision, we will be winding down the Saturn brand and dealership network, in accordance with the wind-d…

WASHINGTON (AP) - Taxpayers face losses on a significant portion of the $81 billion in government aid provided to the auto industry, an oversight panel said in a report to be released Wednesday. The Congressional Oversight Panel did not provide an estimate of the projected loss in its latest monthly report on the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. But it said most of the $23 billion initially provided to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC late last year is unlikely to be repaid. "I think they drove a very hard bargain," said Elizabeth Warren, the panel's chairwoman and a law professor at Harvard University, referring to the Obama administration's Treasury …

Toyota developing anti-drunk driving gadget Toyota Motor said Monday it was developing anti-drunk driving equipment that would lock the ignition of a vehicle if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver. The system features a hand-held breathalyser, equipped with a digital camera, that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver's face for identification, a company statement said. If the driver tests positive, the system either warns him or her, or locks the vehicle's ignition depending on the level of alcohol detected, Toyota said. (if this fits another section better feel free to move it there.) Nitrous oxide has now become the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities, and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century, NOAA scientists say in a new study. For the first time, this study has evaluated nitrous oxide emissions from human activities in terms of their potential impact on Earth’s ozone layer. As chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which have been phased out by international agreement, ebb in the atmosphere, nitrous oxide will remain a significant ozone-destroyer, the study found. Today, nitrous oxide emissions from human activities are more than twice…

[source: MSNBC] Senate reaches deal on extending 'clunkers' Lawmakers agree to vote Thursday on adding $2 billion to rebate plan WASHINGTON - The Senate reached a deal late Wednesday on saving the dwindling "cash for clunkers" program, agreeing to vote on a plan that would add $2 billion to the popular rebate program and give car shoppers until Labor Day to trade in their gas-guzzlers for a new ride. Following lengthy negotiations, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Democrats and Republicans had agreed to vote on the plan Thursday, along with a series of potential changes to the bill, which was passed by the House last week. …

[source: Detroit News] Big Three take 47 percent of 'Cash for Clunkers' sales; Ford Focus top-seller David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau Washington -- Detroit's automakers accounted for 47 percent of the first 80,000 "Cash for Clunkers" sales, the Obama administration said today, and the Ford Focus is the top-selling vehicle in the program. Through Saturday afternoon, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has processed 80,500 transactions, the White House said. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said buyers should be able to take advantage of the program until Friday, but he warned it would likely have to…

The Obama administration’s oversubscribed “cash for clunkers” scheme looks likely to founder in the Senate this week as bipartisan opposition mounted on Monday to the $2bn extension passed last week in the House of Representatives. Republican senators described the scheme, in which car users can take up to $4,500 (€3,170, £2,710) in government vouchers to trade in their vehicles for more fuel efficient ones, as a “boondoggle” – or a waste of time and money – and all but threatened to filibuster the planned extension. This would almost certainly kill prospects of renewing the scheme before the Senate returns from recess in September. Republicans also pointed out that t…

There was much talk earlier this spring about so called “green shoots” in the economy by talking heads trying to coin a phrase that would stick. Unfortunately for us, they had very little evidence to back up such statements. Housing was still tanking, unemployment was still skyrocketing, and GM and Chrysler were swirling down the toilet of bankruptcy. I’ve been rather pessimistic on the economy for a while now. As recently as April I was predicting a long drawn out recovery. I also predicted that a second wave of foreclosures coming from a type of mortgage called Option ARMs would start carpet bombing the economy all over again. Well, unlike a certain ex-President of ou…

Under New Ownership! Avant1963 and I came to an agreement over the weekend where my company, Pittsburgh Living LLC, has purchased Cheers and Gears. Avant1963 will continue in an admin role for as long as he chooses. I have been a member of this site since 2003. In 2007 I was elevated to the admin group while helping out with a server move. Around the beginning of this year, Cheers and Gears was dying a slow, painful, death in the image of our favorite company. I decided to do some much needed maintenance and find ways to secure financing for server and software upgrades. Since that time I have filled the role of head admin previously held by FlyBrian and Josh befor…

Senior Democrat senators said on Wednesday they would change a provision that imposes carbon taxes on imports following warnings that the clause in the House’s cap-and-trade bill could spark a global trade war. The House’s bill contained tough provisions to impose carbon tariffs, aimed at protecting American companies’ competitiveness against imports from countries without equivalent carbon emission controls to those in the US. Senator John Kerry, who is helping to write the senate’s version of the bill, said in a hearing on the issue on Wednesday: “We have already come to the conclusion in working on the Senate bill that we’re going to try and change that provision .…

By Jodi Xu If you are going to name a bank, it’s gotta be something big and strong like “Security First Trust and Federal Reserve.” And you have to name a bank that because nobody’s gonna put their money in “Fred’s Bank.” “Hi, I’m Fred, I have a bank. You got $1500? …ahhh, I’ll put here…in my white suit.” Steve Martin At a time when banks have acted more like customers’ antagonists rather than allies, one bank is trying to prove otherwise, at least with its new name. Today, GMAC Bank, owned by GMAC LLC, switched its name to Ally Bank. It is a reasonable approach, given the word’s meaning–that of supporter, assistant or helper. And GMAC has been so mired in trouble…

Automakers will bring European designs to U.S., and stay with gas engines. Expect these new models to hit the road in the next five years. Everybody knows the auto world has shifted. The trick is divining which brands have got the gumption to last. Now, with President Obama's new efficiency standards requiring a fleet-wide fuel economy average of 35.5 miles per gallon, automakers have their work cut out for them. Domestic carmakers in particular are gearing up to battle forthcoming offerings from new-to-the-U.S.Fiat, with its diminutive 55.5-mile-per-gallon Fiat 500, and Chinese newcomer BYD, maker of the staid hybrid-electric F3DM sedan. Motor City had bett…

Source Car-Sales Rebound Seen for June Fewer Jobless Claims, Deep Discounts Spurring Demand; Ford to Raise Its Quarterly Production by 16% The beleaguered auto industry could see signs of strengthening demand when auto makers report U.S. sales for June on Wednesday, according to auto makers and analysts. Buoyed by fewer jobless claims and improved consumer confidence, annualized U.S. sales could hit 10 million this month for the first time in 2009, Ford Motor Co. analyst George Pipas said on Monday. The deep discounts that General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group LLC have offered to boost sales are also likely to bolster June sales. Those factors suggest "the wo…

My question is why is the US government giving tax money to Japan's Nissan Motor Co? The government of Japan would never give GM, Ford or Chrysler this kind of support, and the Japanese government would laugh in their face if they had asked for it. DETROIT (Reuters) -- Ford Motor Co will receive nearly $5.9 billion in U.S. government loans to spur development of more fuel-efficient vehicles, the Obama administration said today. Japan's Nissan Motor Co. will receive $1.6 billion, and startup green car maker Tesla Motors Inc. will receive $465 million in advanced technology financing from the Energy Department program.
