2010 Chicago Auto Show Coverage The 2010 Chicago Auto Show wasn't all that impressive this year with very few vehicle introductions. Nissan/Infiniti decided to show up even though they were absent from Detroit. They didn't bring anything new and they got stuffed in a remote back corner behind Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Jaguar. Chrysler re-used their exact same displays from Detroit, which is fine because they're actually pretty classy. Any speaker for Toyota couldn't make it more than 4 sentences without stressing how much their customers' safety mattered to them. They even went so far as to stress that the new, not even in production yet, Toyota Avalon wouldn't be b…

Running out of juice From Economist.com IN THE ten years since hybrid electric vehicles first hit the highways and byways of America, they have come to represent 2.5% of new car sales. Yet, in places like Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, DC, every other car seems to be a Toyota Prius. That is because hybrids like the Prius have sold overwhelmingly where well-heeled early adopters reside. Expect the new generation of “Post-Prius” electrics—plug-in hybrids like the Chevrolet Volt from General Motors and those relying only on a battery such as the Nissan Leaf—to end up nosing around the same upscale neighbourhoods. With more than a dozen plug-in and…

_ Looking Way Up: Ford posts 33% sales gain in 2009, 15% market share While automotive sales have been almost universally down in 2009 compared to 2008, Ford has a legitimate reason to crow about its December figures, which are up a third over December of '08 and an impressive 50 percent over November. Ford boasts that its market share is up to 15 percent - one full percentage point higher than in 2008 and the first time since 1995 that the Blue Oval has gained on its competitors. Ford, Lincoln and even Mercury sales were improved in December. Looking Way Up: Ford posts 33% sales gain in 2009, 15% market share

_ Toyota Led All Automakers With Most Recalled Vehicles in 2009 In the midst of recalls for sudden acceleration issues, frame rot, and other issues, Toyota has the "honor" of best ever number of recalls in 2009 with a staggering 4.87 million cars and trucks effected. Ford, with its ongoing issue of older cruise control systems, was second place with 4.52 million vehicles. Without the years-old cruise control issue, Ford would have had posted best year ever. General Motors rounded out the top three, with 2.24 million recalls announced in 2009. Chrysler actually had a good 2009 - at least when it comes to recalls - with just under 600,000 vehicles affected.…

maybe being number 2 will work out after all Volkswagen Steals Toyota's Crown as World's Largest Automaker The people want an empire, apparently, with that unassuming little black VW bug at the head of it. The U.K.’s Guardian explains, "Volkswagen-Porsche has overtaken Toyota to become the world's largest car manufacturer as the German group benefits from state-backed stimulus packages around the globe." VW has "produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, outstripping its Japanese rival which has seen four million cars roll off production lines since January." Ironically, VW reached the milestone in part by taking over Porsche – which it was forced to do after Por…

Whoops! I apologize for the downtime this evening. It definitely was not planned. I had meant to devote some time tonight to test out the new IPB3 software on a development copy of the site. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint) I crossed a wire somewhere and I ended up upgrading the live site. After some bouts with Murphy's Law, I can say that at least we're up and running. So take a tour of Cheers and Gears' new duds. There's lots of new features to play with. When I'm done putting everything back the way it should be, hopefully I'll get to play with them too.

America's Dirtiest Vehicles When it comes to pollution, these cars prove it's not just about fuel economy. Just because a car has low fuel efficiency doesn't mean it's the worst polluter on the road. The Chevrolet Suburban and Dodge Challenger are some of the biggest gas-gulpers available, but they don't cause quite the environmental harm other cars do. MORE AT FORBES.COM That title is reserved for vehicles that combine their poor gas mileage with high tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions. Think along the lines of some of the bulkiest cars on the road, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Dodge Dakota. While fuel economy is linked to emission…

Oldsmoboi's Birthday Challenge Contest open till November 21st, 2009 at 11:59pm Since I was a kid, I've always felt that Pontiac should have gotten an E-body, but a sportier version. You can see hints of sportiness in the Buick Riviera T-Type and the Oldsmobile Toronado XSC. What I want to see is what a 1979 - 1985 Pontiac E-Body would have looked like had GM produced one. So sketch, draw, or chop me up a car. Any 1979-1985 Eldorado, Toronado, Seville, or Riviera is an eligible base. I'll be judging the entries myself. Every entrant will receive a C&G related prize for entering the contest. The grand prize is a 1:18 scale model 1966 Toronado T…

The program, which cost taxpayers $3 billion, gave car buyers up to $4,500 in incentives to trade in their gas-guzzling clunkers to buy new fuel thrifty cars. It was intended primarily to spur sales, and the economy. But Edmunds.com says a lot of those sales would have happened anyway, with or without the clunkers program. Of more than 690,000 vehicles sold, only about 125,000 of the sales were entirely due to the government's added inducement, Edmunds.com says. The rest of buyers just got lucky by getting the government to kick cash into deals that they would have proceeded with anyhow. When the cost of the program is spread over just those extra incremental sales, the…

"May the Best Car Win," launched in early September, allows customers to return their G.M. vehicles for a full refund, including sales tax, between day 31 and day 60 of ownership. The program is limited vehicles in G.M.'s remaining brands: Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. It was originally slated to end Nov. 4 but now has been extended to Jan. 4, 2010. As of last week, only 15 people had returned their vehicles, Tom Henderson, a G.M. spokesman, tol…

GM Sees First Monthly Sales Increase in 21 Months For the first time in 21 months, General Motors is on track to see its first monthly sales increase compared to the same time period a year ago, the company said today. While official results will be announced next week, all signs point to a good month, according to Mike DiGiovanni, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis. "We're really having a good October," he said. DiGiovanni added that about 95% of the sales for the month are coming from the company's four core U.S. brands — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. A year ago, those brands comprised about 85% of the company's sales. …

Chevrolet Enjoying Higher Transaction Prices While the market share declines of the mainstream domestic brands during the past decade have been well documented, the price declines of these brands relative to their Asian competitors have received less attention. While Chevrolet’s average price was only about $240 above that of Honda, it was more than $1,700 above that of Toyota, due to Chevrolet’s higher prices in three of the four segments.
