Hey, its been many moons since I was active on this forum... But I'm stationed here in germany.. I was liking the new cruze, and was curious if the US version is the same as the Euro Chevrolet version of the Cruze... Anyone know what might have changed, are they made in multiple locations, etc?

The Volt: Still not a hybrid... no lie! October 11, 2010 - Drew Dowdell This morning the automotive press' inter-tubes went all a flutter over the revelation that the just released Chevrolet Volt has a clutch that can engage the gasoline engine to the generator which could itself be connected to the wheels when the vehicle is running over 70mph and the battery is depleted. This prompted cries of "GM LIED!" and "IT'S JUST A HYBRID!" due to the fact that since near the beginning, GM has been marketing the Volt as an electric vehicle with an onboard range extender and it had no physical connection from engine to wheels. That got me thinking: What exactly is t…

As regular readers here know, I have faithfully followed every detail of the Chevrolet Volt story and every morsel of news since the car was no more than a show car shell and a pen and paper idea. Over these months and years we’ve run into many controversial moments. Perhaps none has been as controversial as the present “gas engine driving the wheels” fiasco. Earlier this week I attended GM’s first media press conference where executive engineer Larry Nitz described how the Volt operated. In the lecture he specifically mentioned 70 MPH as the point where the combustion engine can contribute power indirectly to the driveshaft. He was quite specific this can only occur…

Can GM leave the pulsatile engine behind? Regardless of whether someone worships the Global Warming religion or think androgynous climate change is utter rubbish, regardless of whether that person cares a lot about fuel economy or not at all, anyone who has ever driven an electric car or a hybrid in purely electric mode will immediately appreciate the eerie absence of noise and vibration of an electric motor. Afterall, there are no contained explosions, no exhaust pulses and no vibrations from metal slugs going up & down. Put the smoothest V12 next to an electric motor and it suddenly sounds and feels crude. Selling "Green" only goes so far... selling ultimate refine…

I am interested to know if the Volt design had been the Cruze, would you consider it more interesting, or functional, or desirable than the Cruze? I am not at all bringing the hybrid into the question. If the Cruze had arrived with the Volt's styling (with obviously more interior space returned because of no battery) would the Cruze seemed more attractive? I have to admit. On styling alone and with the hatchback, the Volt as a Cruze would have actually been the game changing small car for Chevy that is still the jury that will be out on the Cruze. Please vote (volt) for your favorite.....

I believe in neither Global Warming nor the importance of reducing carbon emissions. But, I can see a place for entry luxury vehicles with a refined, fuel efficient and sprightly power train. Such a vehicle will have significant appeal regardless of the potential buyer's propensity to drink Climate Change Coolaid. In this regard, the Volt is lacking in terms of cost effectiveness and performance -- it is a nice Halo car, but it won't be a volume seller. Paying $15,000 extra to save even 70% on the average $1000~1200 annual gas tab doesn't make sense because you won't break even for 17~22 years, and the public is already beginning to awaken to the fraud that is global warm…

Interesting tidbits coming out. MT reports that the Volt DOES connect the ICE to the wheels in certain modes: "The surprising news is that, after you deplete the 16-kW-hr battery and the engine switches on, a clutch connects the engine and generator to the planetary transmission so the engine can help turn the wheels directly above 70 mph. This improves performance and boosts high-speed efficiency by 10-15 percent." I think it was wise for them to do this, but it does seem that GM's implementation is a lot more similar to Toyota's HSD than we were originally made to believe. MT also reports that the car will only do full power for a period of time to protect the b…

"GM’s recently revised electric-range claim is 25 to 50 miles, and we ended up in the low to middle of that band. Getting on the nearest highway and commuting with the 80-mph flow of traffic—basically the worst-case scenario—yielded 26 miles; a fairly spirited back-road loop netted 31; and a carefully modulated cruise below 60 mph pushed the figure into the upper 30s." ... "We averaged 35 mpg for our gas-powered miles and saw 33–34 mpg at a steady, near-80-mph cruise—not exactly spectacular compared with today’s hybrids. Then again, no one should buy a Volt if they plan to run it extensively in extended-range mode." ... "using only standard-household 120-volt power, i…

The wife had Glee on tonight and Chevy has done a little on the show before but tonight they opened the flood gate. First off in the show they spot lighted a new Camaro SS convertible in Blue. They had Two new Corvettes also spot lighted during the show. There were several Cruze spots and the car looked good! Then they even had the ZR1 spot on near the end of the show. GM made good use of their money as they had great placment in one of the highest rated shows and really targeted the youth market. I will have to watch and see what else they show in future episodes. I hope to God they do not do the Volt dance LOL!

Rendered: Two-Door Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback By Ed Hellwig | September 21, 2010 | Photo Illustration: Theophilus Chin Next week, the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will make its world debut at the 2010 Paris Auto Show. It'll have four doors and likely use the same drivetrain lineup as the sedan version that's been on sale in Europe for some time now. As usual, the announcement included a note about sales of the hatchback in the U.S. Specifically, it said that there wouldn't be any sales in the U.S., at least not yet. This comes as a bit of a blow to those who see the Cruze as GM's best shot yet at a true import fighter. Sure, sedans always sell better than hatchbacks he…

Autoweek has a report on the new Cruze and has said the following. "We were pleasantly suprised at how well the Cruze performed." "The Cruze proves GM is putting some real development dollars the small cars." "Now all the Gneneral needs is gas to spke up to more than $4.50." "The Cruze drives like a small car for grown ups. GM spent a lot of effort on cutting NHV and it shows." Traits were low road noise, smooth engine, stiff chassis, Felt compsed, Driven back to back to the Civic the interior was more roomy , felt and looked more upscales and refinded. Rode better than the Civic and was quieter and more refined. THe cruze offers more than we expect for a car of…

The death of GMPD has been greatly exaggerated! They are now back to work on some new SS models for the Cruze and Aveo line up. http://www.autoblog.com/2010/08/23/report-gm-high-performance-division-put-back-to-work-focus-on/ I suspect they are also involved with the ATS V and GS that are coming too. These guys do it right and it will be interesting to see what they can do with a new Cruze many of their people were already tuning the standard suspension vs have to fix the old Cobalt one. These guys are good and worry less on stickers and more on hardware, the right hardware.

It is something that everybody can learn from and develop an understanding for just in case you have to deal with somebody who has OCD in the future. Sometimes though, this disorder hits home more than usual. This week on A&E’s docudrama called “Obsession”, a young man from Chicago suffered from great Obsession Compulsion about a Chevrolet El Camino. Read more and watch the full episode.

Let me say that I had driven the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook before.. but I had never driven the new, more powerful version of the 3.6L in the Lambdas until now. My favorite before this run was the Enclave.. and because of it's styling.. still is. I just LOOOOOVE the smooth, sexy, sultry lines of the Buick more so than the more truck like look of the Acadia/Outlook. The Traverse uses a great deal of styling cues from the Buick. The Interior is, like all the Lambdas, magnificent. The Traverse is in my opinion, with exception to the Enclave, my favorite. Power was fluid and never needing to be pushed. I mean.. U won't and shouldn't be doing stoplight dra…

Well I got to spend some time with some Camaro owners this weekend. Word among them is that the Camaro Disciples are being convened in Detroit during the Woodward cruise week per the Camaro web sites. GM has been and is still working with them. It looks like they might be used for the updates to the present car and I would not be suprised since work is already started they will be used for the Alpha car. This mean real Camaro fans will be in on the new car from the start and not just the end of the program. Good move on GM's part too keep working with them. None of them are talking so we will just have to wait to see what they are doing. Some of what they can say ends…

Some of you may have seen this elsewhere but I thought I'd share: The personal and private collection consists of 110 + Chevrolet convertibles... all years from 1912 to 1975 and Corvette convertibles from 1953 to 1975. That is a Chevy convertible from every year of manufacture EXCEPT 1939... The reason? - Chevy didn't make a convertible in '39 -- and ended its convertible line in '75!

I was thinking the other day about the Volt, in the light of it being used the same way as a Nissan Leaf... i.e., as a electric only car. I know that engines and gasoline don't like sitting still for long periods... I was curious, if the Volt engineers have planned for the possibility of a owner never getting the Volt to run the gasoline engine. Sure... the Volt could turn it on briefly from time to time to ensure it doesn't suffer from its disuse, but then I was thinking... what if the owner never puts gas in it... so then the Volt could not even run the engine periodically to keep it in good condition. Then I was thinking... what if the user never runs the Volt's engi…

So I have a friend who decided she wanted to buy a small SUV. After much convincing, I finally got her to *consider* test driving the Chevy Equinox...all her neighbors had convinced her she should buy either a Toyota RAV4 or a Subaru Forester. I check a few local Chevy dealers that have some Equinox's in stock and we set out to test drive. Dealer has 2 AWD Equinox LTZs in stock, V-6, full loaded, $37K. Both have *way* too much crap on them, but serve the purpose to sell the Equinox and provide a test drive. She likes it, but wants the gas mileage of the 4 cylinder...so we move on to test drive the CR-V, RAV4, Forester, etc. One weekend down. When all is said and don…

Chevrolet Malibu Spied Chevrolet's current Malibu was a huge success when the company needed it, winning a place on our 2008 10Best list and proving that the bow-tie brand could build more than monster SUVs and pickup trucks. Now that the compact Cruze, even smaller Aveo, and minute Spark are all on their way, the Malibu is up for a little refresh. The current car is sleek enough, but the overall design isn't particularly elaborate. The 2012 model will change that with a bit more rake to the beltline, echoed by a faint crease in the body side. The nose and tail will certainly see the most change, but our spies weren't quick enough with their cameras to catch the fr…

http://gm-volt.com/2010/03/26/gm-exec-gen-3-voltec-battery-to-have-shortened-lifespan-simpler-shape-and-be-offered-in-smaller-ranges/ Some thoughts: - I'm assuming Gen 3 will be out 2020ish. If GM is planning all these ways to cut costs on the battery in 2020 then they must not be expecting LiIon batteries to drop much in price in the next decade+. - GM's move to smaller ranges makes a lot more sense. I've always argued the smaller the battery the more utilization and the more sense it makes for more people. This is also a little tip of the hat by GM to Toyota that Toyota was on the right track with the plug-in Prius range. - I love the "no point in going from 40 t…

Okay, I'm borrowing the topic from the Bu.... "The Fusion was a sales dog for a couple years till they rounded the nose a little and upgraded the interior. The wheels have made the greatest impact" Hyperv6 brought up a very good point there. Even the Fusion base model lacks wheel covers. This even makes the basic buyer feel good about how their car looks. Hence, my worrysome issue. I've peeked at other chevy sites where the Cruze is available, an saw something that saddens me: real dorky wheel covers on the base model. My gut tells me that it will be the same way here. I was able to hear from Al Oppenheiser yesterday and here are some of the things non majore he related. The new Camaro convertible is in winter testing. Yes even with the roof down. I got to take a short drive in a Hydrogen Fuel cell Equinox Saturday. This was my first chance to try a electric GM product. While it was powered by a Hydrogen electric fuel cell it gave me some idea of what to expect of acceleration of the electric drivetrain that is not the same but similar in many respects to the Volt. The torqe is like right now. I spun the tires into the traction control and it did not stop till I lifted down the track. It had plenty of pep. It was dead quiet accept for a little electric motor noise that a radio would cover easy. The dash has a meter to show electric use vs a tach. What Chevy Cruze variants would you like to see? The sedan. What a practical bodystyle... but exciting? No way. And with a smaller GM, it seems a no-brainer that they should be doing more with fewer nameplates. So far, all we've seen of the Chevrolet Cruze is a practical sedan. zzzzzz.... What worked in the past could work again: a selection of bodystyles and trim levels in the Cruze lineup is needed to cover the market and help the car generate big buzz. Coupe, hatchback, sedan, convertible and wagon variations were all available on its ancestor, the workhorse Cavalier, and that was when there were J-bodies at every division of GM. It's what we need today... choi…

The Beat appeared as part of a trio of concepts, alongside a micro-crossover called Trax and a retro minivan, Groove. The public was invited to vote online as to which of those three concepts should turn be turned into a production car by Chevrolet's Korean offshoot GM DAT. I don't understand why Chevrolet wouldn't get the solstice. It's more understandable that they wouldn't get the sky, since they're being sold to an outside company. But by GM doing away with Pontiac, it makes sense for other divisions to absorb the newer models of Pontiac, doesn't it?? My mother-in-law just bought a solstice gxp and mother of pearl does that thing haul butt!!! Wasn't that a Lutz deal?? He's a friggin' genius.

Chevrolet Cruze has been delayed General Motors Co. has decided to push back by about three months the launch of a critical new small car for its Chevrolet brand, a spokesman said. The auto maker had been aiming to launch the Chevrolet Cruze next April, but the company is pushing the launch back until at least July. GM spokesman Klaus-Peter Martin said the move is "to ensure a flawless launch" and make sure the Cruze debuts with an array of available options, including a variety of fuel-efficient engines.

I read the following article on yahoo news. This is why people who are really interested in the auto industry and actualy might really "care" about the "American" automotive industry, put absolutely no stock in what these people have to say. But you know every, prius driving, consumer reports reading, half wit, will curl up on the sofa with his latte and laptop to read the latest "toyota daily report". I think EVERYONE has heard, by now, that GM filed for bankruptcy, don't you think? We get it!!! GM filed for bankruptcy. What is so amazing to me, is that this little article about the most searched for cars, mentions that toyota was the most searched for "brand". …

Ten Vehicles That Don't Belong On BuisnessWeek's 50 Ugliest Cars List Jalopnik, not known for their GM love, pulls apart BusinessWeek's 50 Ugliest Cars list and goes to bat for the El Camino. Car:1) El Camino Place on the list: 1 Reason it's BS: Number one. They've got to be kidding. Two words on this one: Screw. Off. First of all, lumping the entire series into one big pile is just plain ignorant. Secondly, it's rude. The El Camino from the outset was a looker and stayed a dynamite design all the way until the fall in the 70s. But then again, everything was pretty fug in the 70s. If they even try to say the 1960 and 1972 were ugly, they might get a Jalopnik-shaped…

[source: General Motors] A Letter From a Disgruntled Camaro Owner October 23, 2009 We receive quite a few letters from customers over here at Chevrolet. Some are good, and some offer "constructive criticism." Normally we don't publish them, but we really felt a need to share this letter. The author, Roger B., gave us permission to share portions of the letter about his 2010 Camaro. - Adam Denison, Chevrolet Communications

This is the second big Volt defection in the recent past... but this one is much more significant. As Lyle writes, "He is the German-born engineer with the job of Volt vehicle line executive, making him as the leader of the Volt program, reporting to the VP level.". http://gm-volt.com/2009/10/30/volt-chief-f...-going-to-opel/ Why anyone would leave the Volt program to work at Opel is beyond me. Hopefully he is just trying to get back to be with friends and family. Here is the Turth About Car's update, which is a little less optimistic than Lyle's: "And as a second executive abandons GM’s EREV moonshot, it seems pretty clear that the program has major shortcoming…

Best Vehicle Design: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro From Popular Mechanics The success of a new car design, especially a sporty one, depends on its ability not just to turn heads, but to inspire an almost primal lust in everyone from a college kid to his grandfather— hitting all the age groups in between. The new Camaro does just that—and it's become one of the few cars outside the supercar ranks that will almost always elicit a conversation at the gas pumps. BEST VEHICLE DESIGN: Chevrolet Camaro, Base Price: $22,245. Under the watch of GM design boss Ed Welburn, Chevy imagined the new Camaro as a thoroughly modern take on the 1967 original. And it looks amazingly c…

GM Looking at New Ad Agencies for Chevrolet The Auto Beat General Motors, facing criticism that it may not be moving fast enough to stir new conversations around its brands, is about to start hearing new pitches from new ad agencies. As first reported by Jean Halliday in Ad Age, it does not appear that long time ad agency Campbell-Ewald, Warren MI is facing a firing. But the automaker is finally doing what this blogger has been advocating for years—-it is opening itself up to hearing great ideas to push the Chevy brand down the field to a better place. For a long time, politics and personal relationships have kept the Chevy/Campbell-Ewald relationship bound toge…

[source: Inside Line] Please GM, Fix the Corvette By The Mechanic | October 12, 2009 This semi-regular column is written (in his own blood) by an automotive sage and noted malcontent, known as The Mechanic. Mercilessly beaten as a child with rolled-up back issues of old car magazines, our free-spoken hero developed a unique "for your own good" take on cars and the auto industry, along with an unfortunate habit of setting himself ablaze. Later, after a distinguished career as an automotive journalist and magazine editor, he cast off the reins of his musty oppressors, carved out his superego with a plastic spork and became The Mechani…

What's the possibility of this happening? Obviously GM sees a market for a wagon here in the US -- they're about to release the CTS Wagon and seemed to be seriously considering the G8 Wagon. Maybe they didn't think a Wagon would bode well with Pontiac's performance image (despite some of their other vehicles not fitting it well)? Could we see an Impala Maxx or Wagon variant? I don't see why not. Then again, there's got to be some reason for why Chrysler is canceling the Magnum... and maybe GM looked into that. That's also possible.

Traveling to the mountains this weekend and riding in my dad and my brother's Silverados on the gravel roads and across streams has really driven home a realization for me: I really miss having a pickup truck. Car-like comfort, mixed with go-anywhere capability and extreme versatility really appeals to me, now as always. So I'm going to say here and now I am going to work toward factory-ordering a 2010 Colorado or Canyon as soon as I feel comfortable. Here's what I want: Z85 1LT extended cab 4X4 (GMC is SLE-1) 3.7L 5 cylinder/automatic/3.73 G80 locking rear end. (I checked EPA estimates for the 5.3L in this configuration, it gets horrible mileage, 14/19! 5 cyl …

After all the hype and anticipation the last 10 years or so have brought upon the automotive world, the new Camaro has finally been delivered to dealerships across the country. I remember seeing the early renderings and thought for sure that this was going to be the best car of the 21st century under $40K. When I saw the movie Transformers in the theater, and Bumblebee morphed into the new Camaro, I was blown away. I just knew it was the car to have. I was so excited to see them I couldn't stand it. But when I started seeing pictures of the actual interior, I was less than excited. The overgrown gauges in the center console near the shifter were the first things that ca…

I got the chance to drive a MFG Camaro today at work. GM has in a Camaro SS with the RS trim automatic with the Brembo brakes. This by far was the best Camaro I have ever driven. The steering was spot on and had good feel. The engine has good low end torque and was much faster than it felt. The exhaust had a great sound from inside but not over bearing to make it distracting inside on a long trip. The Ride was very smooth and not a creak rattle or hollow sound of the old cars to be found. This car may not have ultra high limits but it is a real world car that makes driving fun. Seeing out my be an issue for some owning an HHR it seemed like it was more open to…

We had a few new GM MFG cars in at work today. One was the 2010 Camaro SS it posted and one of the others was the 2010 Nox. The one I drove was a 4 cylinder LT2. Seating and the interior is great. It fit me fine and I felt comfortable as soon as I got in and set the seat. It is easy to see out of. THe dash lay out has a lot of things on it but they are well label and easy to find. The digital screens are wasy to read even in very bright sun. I did not know it has a digital spedo in the middle of the regular speedo and tach. While it is not heads up it is nice when you are used to HUD. Transmission shifts smooth. and is as good as the similar unit in the Malibu. …

Here is a neat video on a HHR SS. It looks like he was fast while it lasted. I don't know if he lost the engine or just a oil line. I wonder if he got the stickers off before they towed it to the dealer. LOL! It did look like it was fast against prepared sports cars. the Video car is a 914. I see a Mini S and a lot of RX7's too. I like my SS too but I think I would have got the Cobalt SS before I would try to run the HHR on the track. 3200 ponds and a lot of upper weight would have hurt performance vs low slung sports cars.

Its been a long time for us here North of the Border. The US was hogging all the Camaro allocation and Canadian dealers were left with a slow trickle of availability. Finally my dealership and a few others have unspoken for units and I might actually get the chance to drive one. First to come: Black-on-Black 2 SS with the RS package, 20" wheels, cyber grey stripe kit, HID headlights, sunroof and all the glorious standard features of the 2SS model. If it was not for this recession I would consider buying it for myself. My wife might not like it but at least I would be single with a Camaro :-) We also have a 1LT model coming in unsold which with over 300 HP would blo…
