http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1208_40_mpg_compact_sedan_comparison/volkswagen_mazda_chevrolet.html What if GM took all those great, efficiency-enhancing insights they learned while developing the Volt and applied them to a conventional gasoline-powered sedan? Actually, that's just about what the Cruze Eco is. It's no secret the two cars share platforms, but nothing trains the mind on efficiency quite like creating a car that depends on a battery (at least sometimes), and many of the Volt's teensy and seemingly improbable efficiencies have reappeared on its much better-selling gasoline-only alter ego. So with the article recently posted about the 2015 Mustang getting reworked, it got me thinking about what GM had in store for the next Camaro. I'm not expecting any big changes since it is still fairly fresh, just wondering if we have an insight on grille/taillight/headlight/etc revisions. You know mid cycle refreshes that still retain the majority of the cars's styling, but make mild enhancements/changes. Like the Mustang has over the years since it has been redone in the Retro style. I'll be in the market in about another 2 years and looking ahead to see what might be a possible purchase candidate. I like the exterior of the Camaro now, but visibility is concerni…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 30, 2012 Almost two weeks after GM announced the return of the Chevrolet SS, Automobile Magazine got their hands on the first spy shots of SS. While we can't tell much about the front and back (GM has done a good job of layering camouflage on those bits), we can see the SS will be based on the VF Commodore. Also unknown is the powerplant. Chevrolet said the SS would come with V8 power, and the photographer noted a V8 growl coming from beefy dual exhaust pipes. There's a good chance the SS could use all-new fifth-generation small-block V8 engine. Source: Automobile Magazine View full article

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 17, 2012 After months of speculation, rumor, and hearsay, GM let the cat out of the bag today. Coming late next year as a 2014 model, the Chevrolet SS RWD sedan. (Yes, SS is the actual name). The SS sedan will be based on the Holden Commodore sedan and it will be it will be used by NASCAR Sprint Cup teams starting at the 2013 Daytona 500. At the moment, Chevrolet isn't saying much about specifics. We're expecting a small-block V8, manual transmission option, and to be sold in limited numbers. “As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive N…

Blake Noble Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 4th, 2012 GM hasn’t exactly been bashful about the fact it plans to build a new rear-drive performance sedan for Chevrolet next year, and race it on your local NASCAR track. Announced in March of this year, the upcoming Chevy — which will wear the SS moniker in either short or long-hand form — should likely boast the same 6.2 liter V8 heart which furiously beats beneath the hood of the Camaro SS. The 6.2 should produce upwards of 415 horsepower for use in the SS sedan. When news broke about the Chevrolet SS, it was widely believed that the car would be only be available with a V8 and four doors. However, that may no…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 25, 2012 A few days after we caught wind of GM trademarking the SS nameplate, a blogger uncovered an interesting entry in a OnStar document. Christopher Price found on OnStar's vehicle compatibility guide that the 2014 Chevrolet lineup includes an "SS Performance" entry. Could this be the mysterious RWD Chevrolet sedan that we've been hearing about for the past few months? Source: christopherprice.net, Motoramic View full article

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 24, 2012 Some new spy shots of the next generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups have hit the internets today and we can gleam some new information about them. The Silverado/Sierra appears to be going towards a more upright and boxy look than the previous model. The front end looks to be more evolutionary than revolutionary, continuing with the large, square headlights and wide grille. Also, it appears the Silverado will continue on with the center bar running across the grille. As for powertrains, the next generation Silverado and Sierra are expected to be the first vehicles to be equipped with GM…

Here are the paint layouts for Greg Anderson and Jason Line in NHRA Pro Stock. We should see these cars soon replace the point leading G6 they are using now. Andrson and Line release the new Summit colors at Super Summit South In Georgia last Saturday. The guys are First and Second in points in the NHRA Pro Stock class but will change soon to these new Camaro Pro Stock cars. The Chevy Teams got a lot of what they wanted with a much longer nose and a greater slope in the C pillar and short deck lid. This gives them similar aero numbers and stability the G6 offers now. These changes are part of the reason these cars are so late. These teams also lost some offical su…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 13, 2012 2013 will mark the end of an era for Chevrolet trucks as the Chevrolet Avalanche will bid adieu. Launched in 2002 as a new type of pickup with actual space for five and the ability to carry long loads thanks to a clever midgate design. However, sales of the Avalanche have tumbled down from 90,000 vehicles sold in 2003 to around 20,000 units within the past few years. To mark the end of the road for the Avalanche, Chevrolet will introduce a special trim level known as the Black Diamond. The Black Diamond will body-colored bed surrounds, a unique badge, and added features. LS models will get a rear backu…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 19, 2012 When you think of Chevrolet, one of the first things that comes up is the SS. The nameplate that signifies added performance on a Chevrolet model has found more than a million homes since the first SS model, the 1961 Impala SS was introduced. So it seems a bit odd that General Motors decided to trademark the SS name this year. Someone uncovered a application filled by GM on April 13 trademarking SS. So what does this mean? Well, most everyone thinks that reason why GM trademarked SS is due to it being using as a designator, and there have been rumors that a civilian version of the Caprice PPV will hit …

Link: http://www.autoguide.com/manufacturer/chevrolet/2012-chevrolet-orlando-review-1592.html2012 Chevrolet Orlando Review It’s not often that automakers go to the trouble of bringing a car to Canada, but refrain from selling it in the United States. With one tenth the population and different homologation laws than the United States, the costs rarely make it worthwhile for automakers to import unique products to the Canadian market. Typically, the exceptions to the rule are vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz B-Class or Nissan X-Trail – compact utility vehicles that are fuel efficient and priced in the lower end of their segments. With vehicle prices around 30% hi…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 27, 2012 If there is one thing Ford and Chevrolet do very well with their muscle cars, it has to be both offering many variations of said car. Case in point, Chevrolet has introduced the 2013 Camaro 1LE package. “The Camaro 1LE combines the best elements of the SS and ZL1 to take road-racing performance to a whole new level. That the 1LE breaks the three-minute lap at VIR puts it in the upper echelon of performance cars. That it starts under $40,000 makes the Camaro 1LE one of the most affordable, most capable track-day cars offered by any manufacturer,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. The 1LE packa…

G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com March 27, 2012 If these patent drawings unearthed by French publication L’Automobile Magazine are the real deal, then it seems Buick — and by extension Opel — won’t be the only GM brand selling a new small crossover in the near future. The drawings, which unsurprisingly are claimed to come from the European patent office, clearly show what seems to be a Buick Encore-based vehicle with some changes to the sheetmetal and wearing the familiar Chevrolet dual port grille. That also means the small Chevy CUV depicted would be the same size as the Encore, would offer all-wheel drive, and would probably share an engine or two. L’Au…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 23, 2012 Yesterday, General Motors announced they will replace the 120-volt power cords on the majority of Chevrolet Volt models the company has sold since 2010. This comes four months after a report from Yahoo Autos said Volt owners were complaining about their power cords overheating and in a few cases melting. At the time GM said the cords were safe and said the issue was the wiring of the charging outlet. GM spokesman Randal Fox says the replacement, which GM doesn't consider a recall or a safety issue, was meant to as meant to "offer a more consistent charging experience." G. Noble Editor/Reporter CheersandGears.com March 14, 2012 Here’s a big chunk of unexpected news for you; the boys over at Chevrolet announced yesterday that the Impala will be bowing out of the grid for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. That’s certainly interesting given that the Impala has earned Chevrolet 79 wins since 2007 after the Monte Carlo went out of production. As Jim Campbell, vice president of Chevrolet Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, said in Chevrolet’s press release yesterday, “The Impala has been a critical part of Chevrolet’s success in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.” That’s only the tip of the iceberg, though. At the very least, impractical was PRETTY back then... watch and you'll hear GM engineers had hope for a full-electric car at least 46 years ago, but reality stepped in despite their best efforts. And this was during GM's heyday, they were the undisputed engineering leaders in the industry back then. Even today, GM leads in patent applications year after year. Some things just do not work beyond novelty. GM knows that. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YXxgatAznHU?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 2, 2012 General Motors is putting their Detroit-Hamtramck assembly on a five-week shutdown due to the overabundance of Volts sitting on dealer lots. The shutdown will effect 1,300 workers. Currently, GM is on 6,319 Volts; 3,596 of those are sitting on dealer lots. That might not sound like a lot. But when you factor in the 1,023 Volts sold in February, then its a lot. GM usually tries to keep about two month's worth of inventory on dealer lots. The 6,319 Volts amounts to almost five months. The move comes after the plant came back online from an extended holiday break on February 6th. Source: Ward's Auto …

Some new details about the new 2013 Cruze diesel has been released. Kicking Tires has found out from GM Powertrain spokesman Tom Read, the new engine will be a 2.0L and come turbocharged. In Europe, a turbocharged 2.0L VCDi diesel inline-four that makes 161 HP and 266 lb-ft of torque is found under the hood of the Cruze. This engine could make its way to the U.S., albeit with a few changes. In a press release, GM says the diesel engine is currently undergoing rigorous testing in Michigan, Italy and Germany. February 13, 2012 - Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com Earlier in January of this year, General Motors' North American President Mark Reuss tipped his hand a bit with regards to the upcoming Chevrolet Coloroado suggesting that it would be a "lifestyle sport truck" in the vein of the Honda Ridgeline but with all of the capability a buyer would expect of a Chevrolet truck. Chevrolet has revealed its new Cruze station wagon today, ahead of its scheduled reveal at the Geneva Auto Show next month. Set to go on sale this summer, the new wagon (or estate, if you'd prefer) adds a third bodystyle to the Cruze lineup to go alongside the sedan and hatchback in European showrooms. Chevy's new small wagon is 184 inches (4,675 mm) long, making it longer than either the sedan or hatch. Inside, the wagon offers 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and a nice 52 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Outside, new taillights flank the wagon's rear and the Cruze's new schnoz will make its official debut on this newest variant. Buyers get a choi…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 23, 2012 The Chevrolet Volt has been having a tough time in the marketplace. First was the Volt missing it's goal of 10,000 vehicles sold last year (only sold 7,671 vehicles) due to the plant being shut down back in the summer. Then there was the whole NHTSA investigation into Volt's battery, which was closed last week. Now there's another roadblock for the Volt. Automotive News is reporting that some Chevrolet dealers are turning down Volts. In New York City, GM offered 104 Volts to its 14 local dealers last month. Dealers only took 31. Even dealers that had no problem selling Volts are being more cautious. …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 19, 2012 It’s been a long time coming, but the day has come. It'll be interesting to see if the Corvette will soldier on with the venerable body-on-frame Y-Platform or if it'll adopt the Alpha Platform. Theoretically, the Alpha will work with a Vette. At 3,350 lbs for a 5-seater sedan with steel body panels, it can conceivably be aluminized and composited to the 3,000 lbs range for a 2-seat Vette. Using the Alpha will mean considerable economy of scale given that the Vette will probabbly share a lot of components with the ATS Coupes and possible a Chevy or two. The Y-Platform on the other hand is getting really long in the tooth -- the last major revision on the underlying structure being 25 years ago with the 1984 C4. The only th…

I know smaller tires are cheaper to replace, and this truck will be all about low maintenance costs, but man, I hope for meatier meats on the US version, esp on Z71s.

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 5, 2012 Today, General Motors announced structural and cooling system "safety enhancements" for the Chevrolet Volt to better protect the batteries in a crash. The enhancements include strengthening a portion of the Volt's vehicle safety structure, add a sensor in the battery coolant system reservoir, and add tamper-resistant bracket to the battery coolant reservoir. GM North America President Mark Reuss said that GM is treating this as a voluntary customer satisfaction issue, and therefor it's not a recall. But it feels like a recall due to the process to fix the roughly 12,000 Volts either at dealers or with…

China Wants To Know Volt's Secrets William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 21, 2011 General Motors has wanted to sell the Chevrolet Volt to China since it's the largest and the fastest growing market for automobiles. Also, China's big cities have seen pollution increase exponentially within the past few years. To fight back, China will offer automakers who offer electric vehicles, subsidies of as much as $19,300. There's a catch if you're a company like GM. In order to get the the subsidy, China wants the automaker to share proprietary technology with the government. GM isn't too keen on the idea and neither are international trade…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 30, 2011 Today, General Motors issued a recall for 4,873 Chevrolet Sonics due to missing front brake pads. The Sonics in question were built between June 2 and November 21 at GM's Orion Township plant. GM says that out of the 4,873 Sonics, only 20 to 30 have no brake pads. Having no brake pads on your car doesn't mean you can't stop, it means the braking performance will suffer and could cause damage to other parts of the braking system. GM says they will notify all potentially affected Sonic owners and install any missing pads and, if necessary, replace any calipers or rotors free of charge. Source: NHTSA …

GM Truck News: Chevy could ditch Colorado name in U.S. by black-knight, C&G Editor/Reporter 20th November, 2011 If you're a fan of small pickup trucks, then you may already know that GM has confirmed the current Colorado pickup will be replaced with a brand new, world-wide model for 2013. However, it seems that, although the truck will be known as the Colorado in the global market at large, the truck may assume a new identity in the United States. At least, that's what Wards Auto is reporting. In an article Wards published on the 17th, here's what they had to say: "The new pickup is known as the Colorado overseas, but the name may not carry…

Decemeber 21st, 2011 black-knight CheersandGears.com There's reason to believe that the folks over at Chevrolet may have a huge New Year's party soon. The storied marquee turned 100-years old this year and, proving that age will not slow it down, is within reach of surpassing it's all time global sales record. At the end of November, 4.8 million cars worldwide were sold wearing the Bowtie badge and December doesn't show any signs of that pace slowing down. It's very impressive, no doubt, but the gravy train doesn't stop there. All of those sales equaled up to Chevrolet increasing it's global market share by one half of a point and sixty percent of all Chevy models are…

Chevy Volt Hysteria: We’re All Going to Die! Or, An Application of Facts and Rationality to Flaming Batteries and Melting Chargers One can learn a lot from history. When gasoline-fueled motor cars began roaming streets (and their proxies) in great numbers at the beginning of the 20th century, fuel tanks were thought to be ready to burst into flames if looked at sideways, and gasoline run-off was blamed for sewer explosions. Such fear and misinformation prompted the New York Times to release a piece in 1912 entitled “Gasoline Is Not Dangerous Fluid.” Action-flick writers excepted, people today generally understand that the internal-combustion engine’s fuel doesn’t …

We’ve told you about the Chevrolet Malibu’s engine lineup; a 2.4L mild hybrid system in the Malibu ECO producing 180 HP and a 2.5L inline-4 producing 190 HP. Now, there’s a third engine coming to the new Malibu. This week, General Motors announced a 2.0L Turbo-4 would be available a year after the Malibu goes on sale. GM hasn’t said anything about the engine, but we can take a guess as to what could lie under the Malibu’s hood. The Buick Regal offers two variations of a 2.0L Turbo; the Regal Turbo with 220 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque and Regal GS with 270 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. Most likely, the Malibu will get the Regal Turbo’s setup or be somewhere in the middle. T…

Chevrolet is adding new models of the Cruze left and right. Earlier this year, CEO Dan Akerson announced a clean-diesel version of Cruze was on it's way next year. Now, we've learned about another high-mileage Cruze. With the current NHTSA investigation into the Chevrolet Volt's battery pack, GM decided to use a different battery chemistry for its upcoming Chevrolet Spark electric vehicle. GM announced today the Spark EV will use lithium phosphate batteries for its Spark EV rather than the lithium metal oxide batteries used in the Volt. The lithium phosphate batteries store less energy and require more space than lithium metal batteries. However, lithium phosphate batteries are more stable than lithium metal batteries. “Lithium phosphate chemistry looks like it could be more friendly in terms of heat management. But it stores less energy. There is a tremendous amount of new discovery…

December 1, 2011 - Drew Dowdell Of Volt owners surveyed by Consumer Reports, 93% of them replied that they would "definitely" buy another Chevy Volt. However, considering less than 6,300 Chevrolet Volts have been sold so far, that number could change. Another issue with the number is that the survey was complete prior to the NHTSA announced an investigation into potential Volt battery fires that can possibly occur in the weeks following a severe crash. Chevy announced a remarkable goodwill program to Volt owners offering them the option of a free loaner car, even a Corvette, while the NHTSA completed its investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today it's opening a formal safety investigation into the Chevrolet Volt after further tests sparked fires and raised more questions about the safety of the Volt's lithium ion battery packs. Back on May 12th, NHTSA performed a side pole impact test, on a Chevrolet Volt at a testing facility in Wisconsin. Three weeks after, the Volt caught on fire with the battery being the cause of the fire. On November 14th, NHTSA performed three follow-up battery-level tests to simulate the incident. Two out the of three tests produced thermal events, including fire. Because of the results, NHTSA has opened an investigation. GM …

That is a little lower than the original (2.0 liter; pre-2004) Honda S2000, but right about where a 2009 Formula 1 race car (4689 ft/min) is at and higher than a Ferrari F360 Modena (4406 ft/min). 6th month update for Volt 1712. Summer went by uneventfully. I continue to drive Monday - Friday gas free with bit of gas used on the weekends. So far I've traveled 5930 miles, 4170 electric and 1760 on gas (70% electric). For the 1760 gas miles the Volt used 42.5 gallons of gas for an average of 41.4 MPG. My overall mileage is 139 MPG, factoring in the cost of electricity it's roughly 89 MPGe. The bulk of gas used was for two long distance trips. One, in July, from CT to the Outer Banks of NC. And, according to Charlie Klein, GM's director of global mass, energy and aerodynamics, the Cruze diesel will be fuel sipper no matter what transmission is installed. The diesel engi…

Chevrolet Volt Losing Interest With Consumers William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 16, 2011 Chevrolet's Volt, one of the most hyped vehicles in recent time is beginning to show signs of losing interest. According to CNW Marketing Research, interest in the Volt by buyers has been dropping. In March, more than 21% of ‘early adopters,’ said they would consider a Volt. When asked the same question in July, the number dropped to 14.6%. It's a similar story with "EV enthusiasts". Back in March, 25% said they would consider a Volt. Now, only 17% would consider one. Most alarming; CNW says "In fact, all categories of new-car intenders are…

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere yet, but I see in the GM parts catalog (I work at a dealership) that the 2012 Impala will be sporting a 3.6 V6 and matching 6 speed transmission. Several other parts are new to go with this, but nothing earth shattering. No changes in appearance that I can tell other than a new choice in 16 inch aluminum wheels.

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/07/05/cruze-knocks-camry-out-of-best-selling-car-spot-for-june/ I see the Cruze is doing better than good in sales. I suspected with the numbers of them on the road I see that do not have Enterprise stickers on them. I took a trip to Cleveland yesterday nad saw nearly 25 of them round trip on the road. I did not count parking lots or dealers. I know winning June is not going to win the war but you need to win battles to win the war. The story here is a little biased. I know they like to blame the earth quake but I suspect it is more than lack of supply too. This car is what the average driver wants in a car. It may not be the first choice …
