Besides the Chicago Auto Show this week, there was another auto show that was taking place. The Delhi Auto Expo was taking place in India this week and General Motors showed off a concept that could be a possible entrant in the subcompact crossover marketplace. This is the Chevrolet Adra concept SUV and its the first vehicle to come out of GM's new technical center in Bangalore, India. The concept looks to be GM's interpretation of the Kia Soul with a similar tall wagon shape. The front features a large grille and headlights that extend into the fenders. The Adra's interior is very modern with unique materials on the dash and seats, flat-bottom steering wheel, and a MyLi…

The next Camaro has a number of things that will be changing such as a new platform and a new place where it will be built. One item that doesn't appear to be changing as much is the design. Edmunds has learned from a source that the company is planning to go down the evolutionary route with the design of the next Camaro. "The difference between the existing and redesigned (Camaro) is not drastically different. It looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro. It is on a different platform, so that is a significant difference, but when they modified it to be on a different platform, the styling did not change that much," said the source. The Camaro is expected to debut…

New spy photos reveal a lot about the body design of the next Chevy Cruze. The front half looks like the Tru 140S concept, and the rear half looks like a baby Impala, complete with the Impala's strong, sweeping, dipped quarter shoulder line, diagonal-cut decklid and taillamp design. The interior appears to be nice, too. Has anyone else seen them?

Not a great way to start a day at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky as a sinkhole opened up in the museum's Skydome area and taking with it eight Corvettes on display. According to a statement from the museum, a security company notified officials around 5:44 AM that motion detectors had gone off in the skydome. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a massive sinkhole measuring 40 feet wide and 25 to 30 feet deep. Luckily, no one was injured when the sinkhole erupted. The bad news is that eight Corvettes currently sit at the bottom of the sinkhole. The eight models are: 1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” on loan f…

2012 Chevrolet Impala Changes hit the Dealerships Drew Dowdell - Chief Editor - CheersandGears.com May 3, 2011 By now most of you have heard that Chevy is doing a final update to the aging full sized Impala. Well those changes had finally hit the dealerships parts books. We knew about the 3.5 and 3.9 liter V6es being replaced with the High Feature 3.6 producing 302 horsepower while maintaining the Impala's FlexFuel designation and the 4-speed auto shifting to GM's 6-speed unit. But lets get the low down on the other changes. While we had hoped that a new Impala would be waiting on the lots for us in 2012 (2010?) These updates aren't a bad thing for a proven platform…

Chevrolet has announced that the 2015 Corvette Stingray will be available with the Performance Data Recorder. The recorder enables drivers to record their hot laps with telemetry overlays to help analyze an determine where they need to improve. The Performance Data Recorder was jointly developed by GM and Corvette Racing partner Cosworth. The system is comprised of three different components: A 720p, high-definition camera to record the driver's point-of-view. A microphone is also included for a driver to narrate their lap. Self-contained telemetry recorder that uses a dedicated GPS receiver to provide precise information of where the vehicle is. The recorder also ha…

Chevrolet has announced the pricing for the upcoming 2014 Camaro Z/28 before it goes on sale in the spring. The base price will be $75,000 (includes a $995 destination charge and a gas-guzzler tax). While the pricetag is a bit extravagant at first glance, the number of performance parts that make the Z/28 a road going racecar more than justify it. Let's begin with what's under the hood of the Z/28: A 7.0L LS7 V8, rated at 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission with a Torsen limited-slip differential that makes sure all of that power to the rear wheels. Other changes include a weight loss of 300 pounds, light-weight nineteen-inch all…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 9, 2013 Just a couple days after Chevrolet announced that 2015 Corvette Z06 will debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the fine folks at Automobile Magazine got their hands on some new spy shots of a Z06 mule undergoing some testing. Now the pictures reveal some information that we have known about since Chevrolet showed off a teaser shot such as the enlarged brakes, the unique black multispoke wheels, and air vents on the fenders to keep the brakes cool. One item that is very notable is a raised hood, possibly bulge or scoop. A source tells Automobile that the Z06 could be packing a supercharged version of the Sting…

Chevrolet has sold just 179 copies of their just launched, limited edition SS High Performance Sedan so far, and already the Australian built vehicle is threatened with extinction. ABC News in Australia (no relation to ABC news in the United States) is reporting that Holden is threatening to pull production out of Australia by 2016 if it does not get the government sponsored support package it is angling for. Adding to the pressure is Holden's apparent demand for a Government decision to be made before Christmas. Automobile manufacturing in Australia has been on the decline for years. After reaching a peak of 334k in 2007, production has dropped to 224k as of 2011 with …

I have been all over the map with Chevy lately. In the past four years, I have worked in three different dealerships, driven three different models, test drove the Cruze, Sonic, Spark and Volt and wound up buying what is probably the least popular of the bunch. I had an Aveo.. then I 'upgraded' to the suspension headache and worsened build quality that was the Cobalt, and for some reason... insanity perhaps? I continue to go back to the mini-hatch Chev-woos. The Volt was a stunning car to drive, it was balanced well, had plenty of giddy-up and was nothing less than a technological leap in comparison to the other three cars I tested. BUT - the province I live in currentl…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 10, 2013 The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray comes with the choice of two different transmissions; a seven-speed manual and six-speed automatic. But a leaked paper from the Society of Automotive Engineers publication says that an eight-speed automatic will be coming to the Stingray. This paper, which has been pulled, was written by engineers at GM who worked on the project. The eight-speed, named 8L90, will feature shorter first gear ratio to improve acceleration, better fuel economy thanks to a greater spread of gear ratios, and the ability to handle up to 738 pound-feet of torque. A spokesman confirmed to Edmunds…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 12, 2013 The Chevrolet SS when it becomes available later this year will be available with one engine (6.2L V8 with 415 horsepower), six-speed automatic, five colors, two options, and that's about it. A lot of us should be happy that GM decided to give the Holden Commodore in the U.S. idea another shot. But a good amount of people are wondering why GM isn't doing more with SS. Automotive.com got to the bottom of this and chatted with Chevrolet Performance Cars Marketing Manager John Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick explained that the reason for the simple SS offering comes down to volume. When Pontiac was selling the G8…

Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com General Motors announced today that starting in 2016, Chevrolet will no longer compete as a mainstream brand in Europe, instead focusing only on what GM calls "Iconic vehicles". GM's mainstream role will be carried by the Opel and Vauxhall brands. Most of Chevrolet's mainstream vehicles sold in Europe are produced in South Korea. GM expects Chevrolet to maintain its mainstream position in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The remaining Chevrolet vehicles in Chevy's EU portfolio will be models such as the Corvette and Camaro. Cadillac is continuing its 3 year plan for an expanded presence in Europe. G…

While the Stingray is a world beating every man's $50K sports car, the Stealthray replaces the ZR1 as the Chevrolet's no-excuse Supercar. The Stealthray sets it sights at beating the Ferrari 458 Italia in every measure of performance -- acceleration, braking and road holding -- while retailing at half the price. It does so quite simply by being a 2.4% lighter car with 24.6% more power, 76.9% more torque, one more gear and bigger tire contact patches. The Stealthray name stems from the full carbon fiber body shell. The Stealthray differs from the standard Corvette in the following aspects:- Full carbon fiber bodywork and floorboards over lightened closed roof aluminum f…

Just read the new Car and Driver where they had instrumented testing of the CTS V Sport and new Corvette Stingray. Keep in mind that the CTS is several hundred pounds more than the Corvette. Yet the instrumented test times are not all that far apart. I bet if the CTS V Sport had the same weight as the Corvette, it's possible it may end up with better times. I really would like to see the new twin turbo in the Corvette. Vette traditionalists will scream bloody murder, that no v6 should ever be in the Vette. I beg to differ. If I were well to do enough to be in the market for the Vette, I would probably lean to the tt v6. This is not to suggest that the v8 is not a…

Chevrolet Speed - Sports Car for the People A Simple Formula 300 hp 3,000 lbs 30,000 Dollars The idea is not to build the best sports car in the world. It is to build the best sports car that the 20~40 demographic can actually afford. It is not the most powerful. It is not the lightest. And it is not the cheapest. But, it is powerful enough to equal a Boxster S at the stop light, it is light enough to approach the FT86 in driving dynamics and, most importantly, it is cheap enough to that a regular college grad can afford one. It is from this car that GM will graduate future Corvette and Cadillac-V owners. Design & Platform The Speed is heavily influenced by th…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 3, 2013 Years ago, automakers and enthusiasts were enthralled with the likes of high-performance pickup trucks. Models such as the Chevrolet 454SS, GMC Syclone, Ford Lightning, and Dodge Ram SRT-10. But as time went on, the trucks and the interest drifted away. However, the idea of high-performance pickups could be coming back. Just before the opening of the SEMA show, Chevrolet unveiled the Silverado Cheyenne concept. The Silverado Cheyenne concept takes a standard regular-cab Silverado and drops in a 6.2L EcoTec V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet also dropped 200 pounds out of the C…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 1, 2013 By all accounts, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala is a much improved model over the previous model. In fact, the Impala currently is the highest rated sedan by Consumer Reports. But not everyone wants the new Impala. By 'everyone', I happen to be talking about fleets. Back in March, Chevrolet announced that the last-generation Impala would be sold to fleets only in 2014. After that, the new Impala would take its place. Now, Chevrolet will continue building and selling the old Impala, known as the Impala Limited, till 2016. "The Impala Limited has done extremely well. Our fleet customers know the car and like i…

Autoblog is reporting availability of the 2.5L and 2.8L used in the global trucks about a year after SOP of the new small trucks. Link to that article is HERE. This is very interesting to me as I might be in the market for a smaller truck with towing capability and better MPG than the bigger trucks on the market in the next few years... HERE is a bit more info on these engines available globally. And HERE is a Motor Trend review of the 2012 Colorado. 7716 lb towing capacity on the 2.8L version? I bet the MPG will be no worse than 30-32 highway (hey, if the big Ram can do it, these little trucks better be able to...). Sign me up!

Is AFM (cylinder deactivation) worth it? I report, you decide… FACT: AFM is worth 2 mpg in on the freeway, 0 mpg in the city. With AFM enabled in Eco mode, the Corvette Stingray posts 17 (city) / 30 (hwy) mpg in the EPA test cycle. With it disabled in Touring mode, the Stingray posts 17 (city) / 28 (hwy) mpg in EPA test cycles. GM chooses to put the “average of the two” 17/29 mpg on the window sticker. FACT: the LT1 V8 makes 460 hp @ 6000 rpm / 465 lb-ft @ 4600 rpm. This is about 45 hp shy of the 7.0 liter port injected LS7 V8, but only 5 lb-ft shy of it. The 7-liter LS7 peaks at 505 hp @ 6300 rpm with 470 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm. Most of the torque gain in the LT1 is from dir…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 19, 2013 Automakers are throwing a fair number of alternative fuels in a effort to improve mileage and emissions to see what sticks. General Motors announced this week that they are introducing Bi-Fuel Impala that will be available to fleets and consumers starting next summer. Does anyone think the Cruze and Sonic will COMPETE with each other or COMPLEMENT each other? discuss. I am thinking COMPLEMENT although I do think if the Sonic is good, it will cannibalize a few Cruze sales. What my guess is, most Sonics will come with the 1.8 and fries, and the bulk of Cruze with the 1.4 turbo will be the sales there. Maybe the proper question is, in retail sales, will Cobalt + Aveo be killed by Sonic + Cruze.

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 11, 2013 This week saw General Motors quietly announcing that Malibu Eco will not be returning for 2014. The reason given is that the 2014 Malibu 2.5 achieves the same fuel economy numbers as the Eco model (25 MPG City/36 MPG Highway) thanks to stop/start technology. The Chevrolet Malibu Eco was never a big seller in the Malibu. According to The Detroit News, the Eco model only made up of 10 percent of total sales last year. Add in the fact that many reviews criticized the Malibu Eco's real-world fuel economy didn't match up to the EPA ratings, and easy to see why the Eco was given the boot. Chevrolet spokesman …

There has been some discussion about the merits of the Sonic versus the Hyundai Accent over at the Hyundai forums and Edmunds. In essence, people have been saying that the Accent is simply a better overall value than the Sonic. Now, I have no horse in the race here but it just strikes me as strange to hear that given my impression of the Accent but my knowledge of the vehicle may be somewhat dated (the last time I saw one was circa 2006 in Bushwick, Brooklyn and it wasn't a pretty site). In short, a lot of people are saying that the Accent will run longer and with less problems than a Chevy Sonic but the counterpoint to that is that when something does go wrong you out o…

Car and Driver got their hands on some information and it looks like General Motors wants to one up the Z06, literally. To start, the next-generation Z06 will be called the Z07. This makes sense as the Corvette is entering its seventh-generation. Or maybe not. Power will come from a small-block V8, but not a large displacement one. Instead, C&D reports that the V8 likely use a single or twin-turbochargers producing around 600+ horsepower. Their re…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 31, 2013 The current Chevrolet Malibu hasn't been getting any love from anyone. Read any review (includingours) and you'll find the Malibu has a tight backseat, subpar fuel economy, and a number of other shortcomings. This isn't helped by sales faltering a bit. Chevrolet knew they needed to fix this quickly and today, introduced a refreshed 2014 Malibu which addresses many shortcomings. Outside, the 2014 Malibu gets a new front end to be more in line with the new Chevrolet look. There is a narrower top grille and a larger bottom grille. Inside, Chevrolet says the Malibu's backseat gains an extra 1.25 inches of knee …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 7, 2013 Those hoping to see a Chevrolet SS at their dealer might be waiting for awhile. Edmunds is reporting that the first batch of SS sedans that will be arriving later this year is small. John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet's marketing manager for the Camaro, Corvette, and SS says that about 900 SS sedans will be available to dealers. That brings forward a problem; there are about 3,000 Chevrolet dealers in the U.S. and with only 900 SSs available, this presents a big problem. How will General Motors dole out SS sedans? By looking at the sales of the Camaro and Corvette at each dealer. "If you have a niche selling …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2013 General Motors has been doing a slow drip on specifications for their new pickup trucks. Yesterday, the company announced the fuel economy numbers for the EcoTec 4.3L V6 that will be the base engine in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. For 2WD models, the 4.3L V6 will return 18 City/24 Highway MPG which puts right in line with the Ram 1500 equipped with the Pentastar V6. 4WD models see fuel economy numbers of 17 City/22 Highway. The city number makes the Sierra and Silverado 4WD models best in class. Not bad considering the EcoTec 4.3L V6 is packing 285 horsepower (@5300 RPM) and 305 foot-pounds…

I did check out the Impala quite thoroughly at the Auto Show. Nice car, inside and out. Practical, attractive. Saw my first one on the lot this evening, yes, it was loaded. I think it was a 2LZ or 3LZ... THIRTY NINE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!!!!!!! wth. how is GM gonna get 40g for an IMPALA?????? The 2012 with 20k on the lot is 15 thousand...... So this is just asking opinions on whether you think Impala can make a huge leap in actual sale prices. I'm not sure they can go that big. Taurus' are selling for 6-7k off sticker right now.......

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 6, 2013 Despite piling on incentives to move Chevrolet Volts off dealer lots a couple months ago, sales rose to a meager 0.1 percent to 11,643 vehicles through July. Add in the fact that the Nissan Leaf dropped it price earlier and is currently experiencing a rise in sales and the inevitable was bound to happen. Today, General Motors announced a $5,000 price cut to the 2014 Volt. That means the starting price is now $34,995 (including $810 in destination). Factor in the $7,500 federal tax credit and you're looking at a price of $27,495. “The lower price and cost savings from driving on electricity provide Volt ow…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 6, 2013 The Chevrolet Trailblazer could be coming to the U.S. if a recent report proves to be accurate. Edmunds learned from an internal source that a version of the Trailblazer could be going on sale in the U.S. in 2014. It's not clear if the vehicle will retain the name or be built in the U.S. The Trailblazer made its debut at 2012 Bangkok Auto Show and went on sale last year in a number of markets, including Thailand and Brazil. The model uses the same body-on-frame architecture with the midsize Chevrolet Colorado and comes with a variety of engines and the choice of two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Chevrolet …

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 30, 2013 More news coming out concerning General Motor's small car lineup. During labor talks with the South Korea labor union, GM announced that the next-generation Chevrolet Spark will go into production in the first half of 2015. GM also announced that new Sonic (a.k.a. Aveo) which was supposed to come out in late 2015 has been pushed back. "The management said it originally planned to launch the redesigned Aveo in late 2015, but the plan was pushed back. It also said it will produce the new Spark in the first half of 2015," said South Korean labor union spokesman Choi Jong-hak. This comes a couple weeks after a…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 19, 2013 According to a report from Reuters, General Motors has pushed back the launch timeframe of the next Chevrolet Cruze from 2014 to late 2015. Sources say the reasons for the push is for the company to squeeze out more sales out of the current model and to put more engineering changes into the model. We don't know much about the next-generation Cruze, besides that it will ride on GM's new D2XX platform. Our best guess as to why GM is pushing back the Cruze by about a year? They don't want another 2013 Malibu disaster. Source: Reuters William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. He can be reached a…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 16, 2013 Its been awhile since we got any new information or spy shots on General Motor's next-generation midsize trucks. However that changed this week as new spy shots came in of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon doing some hot weather testing. We knew that our version of the Colorado and Canyon's exterior design would differ from the version sold in the rest of the world. The shots show the front ends of the two trucks taking cues from their bigger brothers with similar grilles and headlight setup. The spy shots also revealed that one of engines that GM is currently testing is a V6 VVT engine. That means we …

The Corvette Stingray's fuel economy numbers as measure by the official EPA test cycles are... Corvette Stingray -- 6.2L Pushrod OHV V8 -- 17 (City) / 29 (Highway) MPG* * 17/28 mpg w/o Cylinder Deactivation; 17/30 mpg in Eco Mode (Enables Cylinder Deactivation) Compared to the outgoing (C6) model, the 7th Generation Corvette is 1 mpg (city) / 2 mpg (Highway) better in fuel economy without relying on cylinder deactivation. With AFM enabled, this climbs to 1 mpg (city) / 4 mpg (Highway). This is in fact better than an 2009 Acura TL Type-S (17 / 26 mpg) makes the Corvette the most fuel efficient car in its performance category -- certainly the most fuel efficient vehicle…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 18, 2013 Chevrolet has announced today that 2014 Cruze Diesel will return 46 MPG on highway based on EPA estimates. This estimate bests the original Highway MPG prediction by about four MPGs. Chevrolet is quick to point out that the 46 MPG makes the Cruze Diesel the highest MPG of a non-hybrid vehicle. If you're wondering, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI gets 42 MPG Highway and the Volkswagen Passat TDI gets 43 MPG highway. Chevrolet says the Cruze Diesel will be able to travel up to 700 miles on the highway or about 10 hours of driving. As for city and combined MPGs, Chevrolet is keeping quiet on that. Most likely we…

How is General Motors going to cut down the supply? By piling on incentives! Chevrolet spokeswoman Michelle Malcho tells The Detroit News the company will be offering $4,000 off on 2013 Volts and $5,000 off on 2012 models. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com May 28, 2013 When General Motors unveiled the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, the 6.2L LT1 V8 was producing 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. However, the 6.2L wasn't certified by the SAE. That has changed today as the 6.2L has received its SAE certification and the numbers are official: 455 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. If you equip the available performance exhaust, those numbers jump to 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet. “The LT1’s performance complements the Corvette’s low mass with a tremendous feeling of power that builds as the rpm climbs. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 13, 2013 The current Chevrolet Impala holds the title of being the queen of the fleet market. Last year, nearly 75% of the 169,351 Impalas sold went to the fleet market (about 127,013 vehicles). According to somebody's bible, Consumer Reports, Chevy Volt owners are so in love with their cars, that a full 92% of them would buy another Volt. That's pretty darn good, and only 1% fewer than last year, when the Volt topped the survey as well. I don't get the attraction, but this has to be good for GM's public perception amongst the misguided.

At January's Detroit Auto Show, GM pulled the wraps off of one of the most highly anticipated new cars of the year – the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, also known as the C7 or seventh-generation 'Vette. The introduction of the new Corvette marked the return of the LT1-moniker to GM's new-generation small-block V8 engines, the revivial of the Stingray name itself, as well as an interior finally worthy of a car intended to fight on a stage with such cars like the Porsche 911 and numerous other sports cars and supercars from Europe. To the dismay of loyal 'Vette enthusiasts, the new Stingray also marked the end of more traditional Corvette styling cues such as round taill…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 19, 2013 With the introduction of the new Corvette Stingray, everyone is wondering what will be in store for the Z06 and ZR1. Motor Trend has some early indications of what to expect. The Z06 will stick naturally aspirated 7.0L engine with the power output possibly reaching 600 horsepower. The power output for Z06 will not be made till they get the final power output for the ZR1. If the ZR1 produces 700 HP, then the Z06 will have 600 HP. If the ZR1 produces somewhat less than 700 HP, expect the Z06 to be somewhere in the mid 500s. The ZR1 will use a variation of the Stingray's LT1 V8 with a supercharger. So…

Funny... I see no resemblance between the 2014 Impala face and the 2015 Cruze face... the new Cruze looks much more like the Sonic in the front end, which has me scratching my head... I thought the Impala and Traverse were going to be the "new face of Chevrolet" going forward. I thought the Chevy Trax wasn't coming to the US because it wears Chevrolet's "old" face... yet this new Cruze has the split grille and swept-back headlights with clear round elements, a la Sonic. I thought the new Cruze was supposed to resemble the '14 Impala, I was ready for that, I was excited to hear it... but... Something fishy going on.

Last weekend I drove by Classic Chevrolet in Moorestown, NJ (also Burlington County). Their lot was empty, with a ring of used cars surrounding the perimeter fence in the back of the dealership. Again, no advanced notice to custom…
