Settle down: Volt batteries can recharge while driving What the Volt's gas engine can't do is completely recharge the battery pack to its full capacity. Rather, when load conditions are light the gas engine will send surplus electrons to the battery pack, which will also be receiving extra charge from regenerative braking, as well. That sounds about right to us, as we've always been told that constantly charging a battery to its maximum will shorten its life, as the optimum charge range is usually between 20 and 80 percent, not completely drained and not completely charged. GM is determining right now just how much it wants to let the gas engine charge the Volt's batter…

Reuters has just reported inside sources have confirmed that GM has chosen LG Chem along with Troy, Michigan-based Compact Power Inc. to supply the lithium-ion battery packs for the first generation Chevy Volt. The contract will be announced in November and the terms are still being worked out. GM and Compact Power are apparently working out the details of the commercial agreement and how to split warranty costs for the batteries. GM hasn’t confirmed these reports but an LG Chem spokesman in Korea stated “we were informed that the results are due in November, but we didn’t get any official answer from GM yet. We hope for and expect a good result.” As we have heard…

MPG Without the Look-at-Me By Chris Walton, Chief Road Test Editor Email | Blog Date posted: 10-28-2008 What Works: Big-car ride in a subcompact; easy-shifting manual transmission; 37-mpg EPA highway rating. What Needs Work: Low-rolling-resistance tires; manual crank-up windows; manual mirrors; manual door locks. Bottom Line: Most small cars are moving upscale in look and feel, but the Cobalt LS XFE a throwback to that previous bare-bones tradition. Fuel economy. It's on everyone's mind and the guys at Chevy want you to know it's on theirs, too. So once you equip the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt LS sedan with a five-speed manual transmission, it becomes the…

Looks like we'll be doing our part to help GM. We expect to take delivery New Years eve on an 09 Malibu 2LT. It's being brought in from another dealer as our local one (Jack Evans Chevy Cadillac) didn't have the color we wanted in stock. I commented to the sales rep that I really don't care for the alloy wheels which come standard on the 2LT V6 model. They remind me too much of the Impala SS wheels which, to me, look too truck-like. So any rate, on to my point of this post. The car which we're getting, apparently has optional wheels installed and I'm not certain from the description, which ones they are. It won't kill me (maybe) to wait until Wednesday but I'm cu…

Linkity Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Out of nowhere, my car of the year It's been a quiet year for the world's motor industry. There have been no wrecks, nobody drowning; in fact, nothing to laugh at at all. But, hidden in the sea of normality and business as usual, were a couple of gems. We start with the BMW X6, which must receive my inaugural What Were They Thinking Of award. Have you seen one? No, and I doubt you ever will because in a world that's plagued with recession and run by people who believe the world's polar bears are up at the North Pole sipping pina coladas and slapping on the factor five, it is surely t…

After seeing this picture on Wikipedia, I finally come to understand why the new Aveo hatchback doesn't look right. The lower grille is obscenely large, to a point it makes the car out of balance, but if you look at this Euro version with the front plate, it actually make sense. The front plate hides part of the lower grille, so it makes it looks smaller. Look closely if you see a new Aveo in person, you'll find out that only half of that grille actually has holes. My suggestion is to make it look a bit more like the previous gen 3-door Kalos Sport version (which IMO looks awesome). Put on a front plate holder, then relocate the Chevy badge into the upper grille. M…

So has anyone got any idea of the font featured on the 2010 Camaro on the body or on the Chevy website? It is a Camaro logo with squared off letters. They use it on the Camaro5 forums too. But I am not a memeber there and was wondering if any of you smart people have any knowledge of it? Or could share it with me. (Would like it for photochops.)

None of us can predict what will happen. Just six months ago high gas and oil prices was here to stay. Well as we know we are just under $2 in my area. Truck sales are up again and Cobalt sales that were booming are now sitting on dealer lots. If by chance the oil remains down due to deflation. Chevy then brings out the Volt at just under $50,000 Just who will buy them? Will it just be the Ed Begly Jr's of the world or a Politician trying to make a statment for his image. GM's timing has been as bad as it can be with product timing. It is nothing they could have done of late it was just happen stance. But they need to Volt to sell for all the money they have …

The Camaro convertible is off the table probably for a year as GM tries to save cash and claw its way back to profitability. Analysts predict U.S. car and light truck sales in '09 will be even worse than in '08 and the Chevy Volt and Cruze will have to succeed before GM can spend on such extravagances. Whether the Camaro convertible comes back from the hiatus depends on how well GM weathers the storm. If GM's situation improves, Chevrolet could return the Camaro convertible to its product plans for the 2011 model year, just in time to add a fresh new version of the car. http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_ne...hold/index.html

The rapture of the hypercar The Corvette ZR1 burns oil for a good cause: awesome power and agility By DAN NEIL, RUMBLE SEAT 9:48 PM PDT, October 16, 2008 Dear Future: We're really, really sorry. Kinda got carried away, what with all the petroleum and all. You're probably wishing that we had saved a few barrels of oil for you, for airline travel and making fertilizer. And those little plastic swim fins would come in handy, now that Greenland has melted. I know, "sorry" doesn't feed the bulldog. What's that? You've eaten your bulldog? OK, you're just making this harder. The problem with petroleum, you see, is that it's so utterly intoxicating, so rapturously…

It's already hot at 11 a.m. as we pull our 2009 Nissan GT-R into the visitor's parking lot at GM's proving grounds in Arizona. The Japanese supercar looks like a spaceship next to the aging, 1960s-era brick buildings that front the massive desert test facility on the outskirts of Phoenix. Although the few GM employees who see the GT-R barely pay it any attention, we suspect they know why it's here. Somewhere deep inside this test facility there's a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 getting prepped for a comparison test, and now the competition has arrived. We make a few calls and sign a few release forms before a Cyber Gray ZR1 emerges from the main gate and pulls up next t…

2010 Chevrolet Tacuma Link to Jalopnik As reported, this family hauler should be based on the Delta platform, which also underpins the Chevy Volt and Chevy Cruze. What will this new GM minivan be like? Similar in proportions to the Mazda5, this minivan will not be a reinterpretation of previous generations of GM minivans. Notice those rear doors? They look like they're hinged at the front. Rather than long and short, these two testers seem to follow the European model of a tall van with short overhangs. With murmurs this vehicle could be built alongside the Volt, are we looking at the first major hybrid-electric minivan?

Steven Cole Smith | Sentinel Automotive Editor August 17, 2008 In the market for a fuel-efficient car? Chevrolet offers a much-updated 2009 Aveo5 hatchback. Aveo's 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder engine is surprisingly smooth and quiet, and drivers will find generous headroom. (CHEVROLET / August 15, 2008) After trying, and failing, to sell cars in the United States under its own brand, South Korean manufacturer Daewoo went bankrupt. General Motors bought the company and then had to find an outlet for its products. And that's how we got the Chevrolet Aveo in 2004, which looked and felt less sophisticated than products from the other two major Korean carmakers, Hyundai a…

DETROIT — General Motors will produce for the 2009 model year special fuel economy models of four of its biggest, thirstiest trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs. Grouped under the moniker XFE, which Chevrolet has already used on a high-mpg version of the Cobalt small car, the trucks will return 15 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway. That represents a single mile-per-gallon improvement for both city and highway, compared to non-XFE versions with the same 5.3-liter V8 engine. Unlike the two-mode hybrid versions of the company's big trucks, the XFE models use totally conventional means to achieve their improvem…

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt LS XFE - Short Take Road Test Xtra Fuel Economy may not be thrilling, but at least it’s not torture. September 2008 At first glance, the Chevrolet Cobalt appears to be suffering from neglect. Its generic, character-free interior and exterior design was already a step behind the competition when the car launched in 2005, and little has changed in the intervening years. Now that the Cobalt is riding out its final years before its replacement, the Cruze, arrives in 2010 as a 2011 model, that’s sort of a moot point; we wouldn’t expect Chevy to invest heavily in its lame-duck compact, after all. But rising fuel prices and America’s growing interest …

(Vindicator (Youngstown, OH) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sep. 5--LORDSTOWN -- General Motors is asking its midnight shift workers at its Lordstown complex if they would come in for extra Saturday hours so it can pump out more cars to dealers. The complex has overtime scheduled the next four Saturdays, although the number of shifts will vary. Only two shifts had been scheduled for this Saturday, but GM has determined it needs to boost production further. The plant produces about 500 cars a shift. I was just thinking about some of the upcoming and possible future engines in the pipeline, which would be applicable to a 6th gen Camaro. If we assume that a 6th gen is even coming, we can also assume that this car will be smaller and lighter than the 5th gen. Let's call it 180-185" in overall length and 3200 -3500 lbs, depending on equipment. This lower mass opens up all sorts of opportunities for some interesting, fun to drive, and economical combos. Here are some engines off the top of my head: - GDI 2.3L I4, 210-230 hp. - GDI 2.0L turbo I4, 260-300 hp. - GDI 3.0L V6, 255-285 hp. - GDI 2.8L turbo V6, 350 hp. - GDI 3.0/3.6L turbo V6, 400-430 hp. As many as six plug-in hybrid electric vehicles from GM, Toyota, Nissan and possibly Chrysler are expected to be available for consumer purchase by early 2011. I think I already know the answer to this, but I haven't actually seen detailed bits about the drivetrain... but its my understanding that the Volt will have a totally electric drivetrain. A gas engine, but not directly connected to the wheels, but to a generator. So if I understand correctly, since any set of wheels can be happily powered, which will it be? Front or rear? I would actually be somewhat interested in a large RWD electric coupe. ;-) I'm sure someone will set me straight in less than an hour... thanks in advance.

Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET High gasoline prices, tougher fuel economy regulations and limited product development funds are forcing Chevrolet to reinvent much of next decade's product line. Gone are plans for a rear-drive Impala. In question are the big, once highly profitable SUVs, which may be replaced with smaller vehicles. Waiting in the wings is the ballyhooed rear-drive Camaro, arriving in February. On the horizon are a redesigned Aveo, the new Cruze economy sedan and the pure-electric Volt. Toyota says... "On another front, Toyota’s president has just told reporters his company plans to move up the launch of a test fleet of plug-in Priuses to 2009, whereas previously these were expected to arrive in 2010. He also indicated Toyota is planning for mass production of electric cars in the "early part of next decade." http://gm-volt.com/2008/08/28/volt-competi...-fleet-to-2009/ Lutz' response GM Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz responded to this news in an interview with reporters. He indicated that the race between Toyota and GM to create a plug-in car is “meaningless” as the Chevy Volt and plug-in Prius are too different to compare. He cited the very short rang…

Went up do Detroit this past weekend and GM had one at their booth. Looked good overall, but WOw, this thing is HUGE! Serisouly, it's a big car on the outside. Interior looked decent, could've been trimmed off a bit better but overall looked good.

Looking at getting a preowned 2007 Suburban, and I have a question that hopefully some expert/dealer can answer here. There is one available in another city (an LT3), so I am going by the website and the pictures. The pictures show it has a front screen. When I asked the dealer about it having navigation, he was suprised. that it even had a screen. Supposedly it has the front screen in the dash that is a DVD (also has the 2nd row DVD), it has a backup camera, but supposedly no navigation. Was/is that possible? A google search brings up nothing, and attempting to build a 2008 one on the Chevy site seems to have a Sun and Sound package, not able to pick those individ…

My 1997 Chevy Venture is dying and I'm thinking getting a more fuel efficient vehicule. I did some search on the web but could not find a real review of that new lil' car. Anyone can comment? BTW, if you are from the north across the border like me, you can comment on the 2009 Pontiac G3 wave too . I do think that the Pontiac offering is even cuttier than the Chevy one. Ok, now it's your turn to do the talking...

The Malibu LTZ looks way beyond Chevrolet's position in the marketplace. Looks so good on the street....it grabs my attention constantly. I'm talking the top level LTZ only, with those nice spidery wheels, heck this car almost has an Audi cache about it. I see more and more new Malibus around town so obviously the public is getting it. If I was in the market for this sort of car, this is the car of choice for me. So impressed. A job well done, GM and Chevrolet. I like especially it's profile...that lower greenhouse makes it so elegant as it glides by.

Might seem like an odd topic for this forum, and if anyone thinks it should be redirected somewhere else, let me know. I've brought it up here before (probably in the Sales Ticker forum), but I really feel like I see more 2007/08 Tundra's than I do more Silverados. I'm in Houston, and Toyota does really well here pretty much across the board, but it's actually pretty wild how well this new Tundra does around here. They're basically everywhere - and I see all types of people driving them. I look out the window at my office, and it's nothing for me to see 2 or 3 Tundra's within the course of a few minutes it seems. I know they're doing right at about 90k a year (…

http://gm-volt.com/2008/08/13/chevy-volt-u...ing-in-our-way/ Seem to me that the drive setup would already have been taken care of... and $10k to replace the battery? One better hope it'll run well past the 150k mile warranty period to make buying the car worthwhile.

So I gets a letter in the mail from some settlement claims place in like Butt, Montana telling me about a class action lawsuit against GM for faulty speedometers in their 03-05 m/y 15/25/3500's (Tahoe, Yukon, Silverado, Sierra, Avalanche, Suburban). Says basically the original speedometers will...not may, will go bad at one time or another, either displaying the wrong speed, or no speed at all. My Silverado is an 04, I bought it with 40k on it this past December. In January, the speedo took a dump on me, reading anything from 30-60 miles under. Once, it read 90 while I was stopped! So I took it in, the service guy told me there was a special "program" going on to rep…

When looking at the new Camaro -- are you interested in the V6 or V8 engine? Do you seek the direct input of a manual transmission, or are you more comfortable with an automatic transmission? Hehe... Eat your heart out USA Today. Another good review for the Chevrolet Malibu which happened to be in today's Seattle Times Motoring section. Even though the article was provided by The Virginian-Pilot, it's good to see a local source print a positive review. Love the Nordstrom reference at the end. Should resonate with locals. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/moto...vymalibu07.html

I got the chance to drive a HHR SS last weekend and I must say even with FWD it was very impressive. First off the Turbo Enginer that has 260 HP with only 2 liters has little turbo lag and is a blast to drive. The no lift shift works as advertised and keep the boot up. The engine is smooth and quiet. The torque steer is present but nowhere like you would expect and is well controled. It did not want to dive to the ditch but it sill has a little wonder due to the front tires fighting for control as the traction control does not kick in too soon. Brakes were very good and these were not even the Brembo option. The interior looks good color wise but is still a li…

Damn, I was hoping it would be a little better than this... :\ Still not bad by any means... From Leftlane News: 2010 Chevrolet Camaro laps Nürburgring in 8:20 July22 General Motors has officially taken the wraps of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Although images and specs leaked on the modern day muscle car last week, we now have the official figures straight from the horse’s mouth. As expected, the Camaro will be available in LS, LT and SS guises. The LS and LT models will do with a 3.6L V6 – mated to either a six-speed automatic or manual transmission – and will produce 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Despite having more power than the V6 versions of the F…

I have to say this makes the Vette look much, much better, especially with those new wheels. The ZR1 (also available in gray) is no longer the only C6 I like styling-wise... http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/13/pics-ap...lor-and-wheels/

With GM's very acute attention to design and detail in our newest models both on the inside and outside (Camaro in particular, Equinox, Malibu, Invicta, etc.), it only makes me anticipate a new generation of Corvette even more, especially with the CAFE hype hitting and saying the Corvette might be smaller, lighter, and on Alpha. However, my biggest focus is on interior/exterior design. What are you guys expecting?

By Ed Peper GM Fast Blog North America Vice President, Chevrolet A few months ago, we showed you some official “spy shots” of the pre-production version of the new Camaro coupe. To say the least, response to that post was overwhelmingly enthusiastic – something that was extremely gratifying to all of us here at Chevrolet, who have been hard at work testing and retesting the Camaro development models. As a reward for your interest – and your patience – here’s a sneak peak of the convertible version of the Camaro, which is also undergoing a similar evaluation as we ready it for full production later next year. (Preproduction models shown. Actual production models ma…
